2 2 Introduction This briefing pack highlights those features which can normally be assessed without the use of measuring equipment. The details listed are not intended to be exhaustive and may be augmented, or tailored as necessary to suit particular tasks, products or materials (or any combination thereof) - as appropriate. Additional or specific detail instructions may also be referenced within associated Rolls-Royce (e.g. RPS Visual Inspection) or other relevant proprietary engineering / technical specifications which are mandatory; this brief does not replace such requirements. Always check the relevant drawing, design and / or repair scheme for appropriate clarification / guidance.

3 3 Introduction (Contd.) Before you start Study the drawing and understand the function / design intent - is this Drawing or Repair Scheme (as appropriate) the latest issue standard? Read the notes and establish what are the: Key Features Material and Material Form Heat Treat Condition Controlled Features Connecting Features (e.g. Radii / Chamfers etc.) What other specifications (if any) may also apply?

4 4 Introduction (Contd.) Although this briefing pack applies mainly to visual features, remember your other senses. Smell Processes can have characteristic / associated smells (e.g. if pressure tested with fuel / oil - expect to detect a residual odour). Hearing Listen for rattles and characteristic ring. Touch Feel minor imperfections and undulations (watch out for sharp edges!). Check ferrous metals with a magnet. Remember Look first - measure last If in doubt - always ask!

5 Visual inspection - Basic Requirements. 5 General Appearance Line up parts in the same orientation - do they look the same? Damage, swarf, burrs Unusual / undesired features (e.g. rattles ) Geometry of part and offset features Missing features / operations Non-specified features / operations Scaling and / or contamination If you detect rust - check with a magnet and confirm whether or not the material should be magnetic

6 6 Surface Condition Scores, nicks, dents Surface / visible cracks Material de-lamination Corrosion, pitting Cast, forged or machined surface? Unusual polished or blasted areas - indicating possible repair or rectification work may have been undertaken Unusual surface / visible imperfections

7 7 Colour Heat or burning marks Chemical cleaning Surface finish Surface treatments (are they required / approved?) Uniformity Oxidisation colours on titanium Threads Missing threads Torn or truncated Run-out Square to face

8 8 Machined Features Does surface finish relate to method required to achieve tolerance False cuts Variations in wall section Steps in machined surface - if they should be there, are they in the right location / direction Adjacent cast or forged surfaces which may foul (e.g. during assembly) Variations in radii or chamfers Seatings for bolts / nuts / washers Clearance for bolts

9 9 Holes Surface finish, steps, scoring Bell-mouthed or barrelled Uniformity of hole to edge and hole to hole distances Offsets in correct direction Missing dowel / timing holes Intersecting holes (e.g. oil-ways) Counter-bores, chamfers Chamfered to clear under bolt head Recheck the drawing Edge radii on highly stressed parts Sharp edges on metering holes

12 12 Assemblies Loose or missing parts Unusual rattles Peening and / or riveting correctly performed Insert tangs correctly removed Inserts correctly seated Fasteners correctly fitted and to the correct part number Detail parts correctly fitted (e.g. any mistake proof features are properly located as required) Electrical connections (e.g. harnesses) undamaged and correctly fitted Seals, gaskets and / or jointing compound(s) have been correctly incorporated - where required.

13 13 Receipt and Despatch Requirements Accompanying paperwork complete and properly authorised - as applicable Quantity is correct (i.e. no shortages) Parts are clean with no swarf or blasting grit contamination (check all internal cavities accordingly) Part and serialisation details are in the right place, using the right method and legible Packaged to SABRe requirements and / or other approved method where specified / applicable Parts and packaging are free from damage and the packaging is correctly identified (e.g. Bar Codes, Concession Labels etc.) Any / all applicable concessions are fully approved All order requirements have been fully achieved (e.g. FAIR) Release Note (CoC) is legible, correctly authorised and contains any / all relevant endorsements - refer to SABRe : Release Note (Certificates of Conformity) Process for additional detail
