Harmonizes Canadian and American fenestration standards: AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A North American Fenestration Standard/Specifications CSA Testing Facility Edmonton New, comprehensive standard addressing performance and quality requirements of windows, doors and skylights (including tubular daylight openings) Replaces CSA-A440 for windows Called the Harmonized Standard in the Building Code and NAFS-08 by the fenestration industry In Canada needs to be used with the Canadian Supplement Let s call it NAFS NAFS The New Code for Windows & Doors

7 What about BIG one-off windows? BIG one-off windows Unusual configurations may not be testable Manufacturers still need to comply with code... if it can t be tested, it should at least be engineered Building officials may request test reports or proof of engineering

Performance Grade Minimum Performance Grade set for each Performance Class R PG15 LC PG25 CW PG30 AW PG40 NAFS calls for a single numeric designation combining structural and water penetration resistance properties Grade range from 15 to 100 Reported in increments of 5 Performance Grades, project specific, may be determined by an Architect or Municipal building department by using the calculation tables within the Canadian Supplemental. There is a quick and easy calculator available for builders to determine minimum performance grade for Part 9 buildings.

12 NAFS Product Types NAFS Product Types Each product type has one or more Performance Class Each Performance Class has a set of Gateway Requirements Exception Specialty Product (SP) used for products not in Table 5, or non-standard geometric shape SP products are rated by Performance Grade but do not have a Performance Class or minimum Gateway requirements Folding doors can report their performance as Specialty Products What Products does NAFS exclude? 14 Determining Performance Grade A440S1-09 Canadian Supplement Additional requirements applicable only in Canada Requires selection of a building and site specific performance requirement Used to set the following two values for the project; Specified Wind Load in kilopascals (kpa) Specified Driving Rain Wind Pressure (DRWP) in Pascals (Pa) Height is the height of the top of the window, door or unit skylight above grade in metres Minimum height of 10m is used for all buildings Exposure Conditions are as follows Open Terrain Level terrain with only scattered buildings, trees or other obstructions, open water or shorelines Rough Terrain Suburban, urban, or wooded terrain extending upwind from the building uninterrupted for at least 1km or 20 times the building height, whichever is greater

15 Determining Performance Grade Specifying the Wind Load and DRWP for a project is legally not the manufacturer s responsibility as that could imply liability for the whole envelope The builder (or a specifier assigned by the builder) can estimate the requirement using the A440S1-09 procedure so as not to have an issue later Use the NAFS calculator click on Fenestration Canada site click on the fenestration performance calculator icon insert required information into the calculator to determine the performance grade
