Cub Scout Pack 102 Parent Handbook Lamb of God Church Estero, Florida Panther District - Southwest Florida Council

2 Welcome to Pack 102! Dear Scout Parent, We re so glad you have chosen to enroll your son in our Pack. We know that both of you will be glad you did. We ve planned an exciting year, and your son will have a great time learning, advancing, making new friends & playing. The Pack Leaders in Pack 102 seek to provide activities that offer opportunity for physical fitness, citizenship development, and educational value. Every member of a Cub Scout s family can enjoy many of our planned activities. Don t be surprised if you find yourself as excited about Pack activities as your son! Parental involvement is CRUCIAL to the success of our Pack, which is solely run on the volunteer efforts of the Pack s parents. We are not just recruiting boys into the Pack, we are recruiting families into Scouting. Parents DO NOT need prior scouting experience. Just a willingness to participate and Do Your Best just like your Cub Scout! We highly encourage you to think about which way(s) you and family can help contribute to our Pack. All families will be required to help the Pack in one event or another, please be prepared to participate and have fun! This handbook will provide an overview to Scouting and Pack 102. If you think there is something that is not addressed in this handbook and you are in need of answer, please feel free to contact your Den Leader or one of the Committee Members. Thanks Again and Welcome to Pack 102! Yours in Scouting, Pack 102 Committee Members

3 Scouting Basics Cub Scouting s 12 Core Values 1. Citizenship 2. Compassion 3. Cooperation 4. Courage 5. Faith 6. Health & Fitness 7. Honesty 8. Perseverance 9. Positive Attitude 10. Resourcefulness 11. Respect 12. Responsibility The Cub Scout Promise I promise to do my best To do my duty to God and my Country To help other people And to obey the Law of the Pack Law of the Pack A Cub Scout follows the Akela The The Cub Scout Salute Cub Scout helps the Pack go The Pack helps the Cub Scout grow The Cub Scout gives goodwill The Cub Scout Motto Do Your Best! The Cub Scout Sign The two fingered sign signals that it is time to be quiet & pay attention. When your son (or you) see it at a meeting, you need to be quiet and return the sign to the leader. Please be a good example to your son by modeling the behavior we are seeking to encourage with this sign.

4 Uniforms As an essential component of Cub Scouting is the uniform and insignia. Cub Scouts are made to feel part of a group and to have a place to display their awards when they wear their uniforms. Uniforms are to be worn with pride at all Scouting functions. Uniforms are to be kept neat, cleaned and ironed. Sneakers or shoes are to be worn with the uniform, no flip flops or opened toe shoes. These are called Class A Uniforms Uniform Cost is between $100 to 150 for Class A s. Adult Den Leaders are encouraged to wear the appropriate uniform related to the Den that they are in charge of. If you are not comfortable wearing a complete uniform, then you must wear the uniform shirt.

5 Scouts & Den Leaders are also required to purchase a Pack 102 T Shirt when they sign up with the Pack and also when theirs is no longer to standard. We wear these Pack T Shirts with Navy Shorts or Pants. These shirts are to be worn on camping trips and on events that the full uniform is not required. We do this for a couple of reasons. First, it shows uniformity as a Pack, Second, it is easy to keep the Scouts together when we know what they will be wearing. Below is a picture of our current shirt. We will also have a long sleeve shirt and female cut shirts available for purchase. Support Pack 102! Buy one for your other kids, buy one for yourself! These shirts have to be purchased in bulk and we do this at the beginning of the Scout year. We can not do special orders after this. We also have very limited sizes available on hand for purchase. These are called Class B Uniforms Class A Uniforms can be purchased at the Scout Store located at the Boy Scout Council located at Southwest Florida Council 1801 Boy Scout Drive Fort Myers, Florida Phone (239) Scout Shop Hours: Sunday - Closed, Monday thru Friday - 9AM to 6PM, Saturday 10AM to 3PM (Wednesdays open to 7PM) Online Ordering can be done at When you purchase your uniform you will also need to purchase the following items: 1 Southwest Florida Shoulder Patch; 1 set Red Numbers 102; World Crest Emblem (purple Fleur-de-lys)

6 Your Role as a Cub Scout Parent Adult Leaders Cub Scouting is different from other activities that your son(s) might be involved in. It is not an activity where you can just drop off for 1 to 2 hours a month and forget about it. Cub Scouting encourages closeness to family. The program will give you opportunities to take part in activities that you normally would not do. It provides a positive way for parent/son to grow closer together, and encourages you to spend quality time together. In this way, Cub Scouting is a program for your entire family, and your Parent Requirements 1. To see that he has the proper uniform & handbook. (Uniform due at NOVEMBER Pack Meeting, Book ASAP) Work with your son on projects. Help your Cub Scout along the Advancement Trail. Work with him to complete achievements for his rank award, first Bobcat then the proper rank for his current age/grade. Participate in monthly Den & pack Meetings. This helps provide support for the Den. Go on family campouts with your son (although not required for joining, this is where many of loops/pins are worked on) Return information when requested. is our main source of communication and is key to planning of events for your son. Please be ON TIME when a response is needed. Tiger Cub parents, you MUST attend all den meetings and participate in the activities as your son s partner. THIS IS REQUIRED BY BSA. YOU MUST VOLUNTEER FOR AT LEAST 2 EVENTS PER SCOUT YEAR Required Training ALL adult leaders MUST take the Youth Protection Training before they even can fill out the application to become a Den Leader. There are a total of 4 trainings, which are: Fast Start Training, This is Scouting, Cub Scout Leader Specific Training, & Youth Protection Training are required. On the adult applications ALL SECTIONS MUST BE FILLED OUT. Do not leave out any information as background checks are completed on each applicant. Honesty is the best policy. Please refer to Page 14 for the specific instructions on how to complete these trainings.

7 Pack Structure The Family The primary unit of Scouting is the family. It is impossible for a boy to have a successful scouting experience without the help of at least one parent. Boys will be working on their activities with parents. Parents take the role of Akela (trusted leader). As Akela, the parent signs off on each activity in the Scout s handbook to certify that they boy has done his best in that area. The handbook is turned into the Den Leader for review and approval. The Den Each Cub Scout belongs to a Den of approximately 6 to 8 boys in his grade. The Den is led by a volunteer Den Leader who has taken on the responsibility of organizing the program. This Den Leader is trained and registered with the BSA. The Den Leader is responsible for planning the year s program so that the Scouts are given opportunities to attain their rank badge. Dens typically meet 2 times per month. Tiger Dens also have Go See It field trips. A Den is more successful when parents organize and lead individual events. This gives the Scouts opportunities to experience different types of leadership styles while keeping parents involved with the program. EACH DEN IS TO HAVE A DEN LEADER & ASSISTANT DEN LEADER IN ORDER TO RUN EFFECTIVELY NO EXCEPTIONS! Den Ranks Tiger - 1st grade/7 yr olds work with their Parents Wolf - 2nd grade /7 to 8 yr old Bear 3rd grade/8 to 9 yr old Webelos I - 4th grade/9 to 10 yr old Webelos II - 5th grade/10 to 11 yr olds these Scouts work Cub Scouting s highest award, the Arrow of Light. Next Stop.Boy Scouts!

8 Advancements Each rank has a specific set of tasks that they need to complete in order to receive their respective badge. A Scout has from August to May to earn his badge. Many of these electives or achievements are part of daily routines, we are just not aware of it! As your son achieves one of the electives or achievements you, as the Akela need to sign off on that section of the handbook. Then at the next Den meeting your Scout is to review with their Den Leader to sign off on that section as well. There are also Academic & Sports Electives known as Belt Loops & Pins that every Scout can work on. Once a belt loop is awarded for a specific elective it can be worn on the Scout s belt! See how many they can achieve! Make it fun! Once your Scout has completed an achievement, ensure that your Den Leader is notified and the Advancement Chairperson. The Pack - We are Your Den is part of a Cub Scout Pack. A Pack is also referred to as a Scouting Unit. The Pack is run by a Cub Master. A Pack in cub Scouting and a Troop in Boy Scouting are similar and are both referred to as units in the Scouting hierarchy. The Pack has a Tiger, Wolf, Bear & Webelo Dens. The Pack Committee The Pack is supported by a Pack Committee, ALL volunteers. There is a Pack Committee Chairperson and at least 3 other Committee members. Most Committee members consist of family members. There is a chartered organization that is granted a charter by the Boy Scouts of America to use the Scouting program. The chartered organization can be a school, service club, religious group or another group interested in youth. This chartered organization approves the leadership of the Pack, provides a meeting place, and operates the Pack within the guidelines and policies of that organization and the BSA. Our chartered organization is Lamb of God Church in Estero, Florida. Please help us ensure that when we are at Lamb of God for a meeting that we treat all areas of the premises with respect.

9 The Panther District Packs are organized into Districts, and ours is the Panther District. At the District level, summer camps, day camps, Leader roundtables, and other events are planned. The District supports Packs (Units) through Membership, Finance & program services. Fundraising is another way that both the District and pack is helped financially. Council Activities Several events are held by the Southwest Florida Council. Some of these events are training related, others are Cub Extravaganza Camping Weekend, Parent-Cub Overnight, Scout Fair, Summer Day Camp and many other exciting, fun-filled events. Council has 2 different camping facilities. One is named Camp Flying Eagle (CFE) in Bradenton and the other is named Camp Miles (CM) located in Punta Gorda. Many belt loops are earned on these types of camping trips. Two belt loops in particular, Archery & BB Gun, are only able to be earned on these types of camping trips at these facilities. In order to receive the Outdoor Activity Badge your Scout is required to complete a Council Camping trip & a Council Day Camp. Sign up and information is always communicated to you via the Committee. Remember, when you attend these events, you are representing Pack 102!

10 Community Service Participation Everyone, and this is to include Scouts, Parents, Den Leaders & Committee Members, are required to participate in Pack 102 Community Service events each Scout year. Participation is monitored for fulfillment obligations. Remember, this is a key part of the Scouting objectives. Requirements Pack 102 requires that EACH SCOUT & PARENT MUST attend AND participate in 2 Community Service Projects per Scout Year. This is from September to May. Each Scout needs to have these requirements met in order to advance to his next rank. Community Service Events The following are the events that Pack 102 considers to be Community Events: Scouting for Food Feeding 5,000 Bell Ringing Pinewoods Campus Garden Lamb of God Cleanup Easter Extravaganza help for Lamb of God Flower / Tree Planting for Lamb of God Events can be added to our Pack calendar as seen fit by the Committee. Advance notice of added events will be communicated by the Committee as soon as they are known.

11 Camping Trips Activities Please read our Camping Guidelines handbook for more information on this topic. Camping trips are not required, but are a lot of fun! This is where a lot of different electives are worked on as a group. Class A & Class B Uniforms are required on these trips, Council or Pack. Please refer to the Pack s Camping Handbook for our guidelines. Blue & Gold Banquet Happy Birthday to Boy Scouts! Our banquet will be held during the month of February as this is the month that Boy Scouts came to America. Watch for more details to come on this great event! Full participation from each Scout & family is expected for this event. This is the core foundation of which Scouting was established. Pinewood Derby This is one of the biggest events in Cub Scouts! This event goes back to 1953 when a Cub Master s son was too young to participate in the Soap Box Derby. The building of the car is done with a parent s help. It creates many fun memories! Each Scout builds their own car to race. The Scout purchases a kit that consists of a block of wood made of pine with two notches for wheels, four plastic wheels and four nails. The finished car must use all nine pieces, must not exceed a certain weight (usually five ounces), must not exceed a certain length and must fit on the track used by our Pack. The top 3 winners from our Pack Derby, then are invited to race at the District Derby. There are certain rules that are to be followed in order to be legal to race. These will be given to you by the Committee and posted on our website. When we hold our Derby at the end of the Scout year, we also hold sibling and parent races as well! Be creative, have fun! We will have the kits for sale or they can be purchased at the Scout store. Below is a picture of what the kit consists of. Other Fun Filled Activities The Committee will put together a Fall activity and end of the year activity for the Scouts. Volunteer support and help is needed for these events. Let s make it fun for the Scouts!

12 Membership Fees & Den Dues Membership Fees When you first sign your Scout up for Cub Scouts, there is an application and membership fee that is due. The fees are based on when your Scout is signed up. Fee Schedule is attached, please see next page Once signed up, your Scout will be rechartered every January for the upcoming Scouting year. This recharter is good for 12 months. Pack 102 Den Dues The Den Dues for Pack 102 are $8 per month. We collect the monies 2 times per Scout year, beginning of September & January. 14 14 Fundraising Council Fundraising Council is able to continue to grow with every Pack s support year after year. There are two ways that we as a Pack help to achieve this, Popcorn Sales & Friends of Scouting (FOS). Popcorn Fundraising Each Scout will have a minimum goal that they are required to reach in order for them to receive credit for this fundraising event. This will be set by the Committee. Participation is required by each Scout, No Exceptions. Popcorn sales are from September through November. The Scouts are able to sell in person or online. Trail s End is the popcorn supplier that Boy Scouts uses to hold their main and only fundraising event. The website is From this fundraiser, 70% of the sales goes to our local scouting office. From this 70%, our Pack receives 28% and local scouting keeps 72%. This is a lot of money for us! Sell! Sell! Sell! Friends of Scouting The Southwest Florida Council is fully funded by donations from FOS and fundraising. These funds are used to maintain both camping facilities, Camp Miles & Camp Flying Eagle, Camping Events, Council Scout Shows & Activities. Last year, each Scout cost Council $250 to support on the above functions. Scouts does not receive any National funding, it is all based on local fundraising. For F.O.S, any amount that each family can give is greatly appreciated. F.O.S. representatives will attend one of our meetings in February of the Pack year with more details. Pack Fundraising When the Pack holds a fundraising event, each Scout is required to participate. Fundraisers for this Scouting year have not yet been set, this information will be communicated via the Committee and posted on our website.

15 Meeting Schedule Meeting Schedule Pack 102 meets from September to May. There is a Pack Meeting one Friday night a month, this is where all Dens come together.
