1 Felting 1. Have you ever tried felting? 2. If yes, was it fun/ easy/ difficult/ boring? 3. If no, why haven t you? 4. If you prefer other crafts, what are they? 5. Would you like to learn a new craft? E.g. basketry, beading, leatherworking, macramé? Now read an article from a do-it-yourself website and do the tasks below. Guest Artist Rory Valentine will show you how to create a felt ball necklace. Materials: 3-4 colors of wool roving ("tops") Bar of pure soap or dish washing liquid Spray bottle of water Bowl of water Towel Colored bead string Seed beads Magnetic necklace clasp or other necklace fastening Sewing needle (thin enough to go through a seed bead) 50
2 To create felt beads: 1. Pull small amount of fleece from the roving and form into a round ball shape. Pull another small amount of fleece in a different color and layer thinly around fleece ball. Continue winding thin pieces of fleece around ball in differing colors and directions until desired size is reached. (For this project, make the ball approx. 6 cm in diameter.) You want to make sure the ball is light and fluffy like a cotton ball because the air trapped inside helps it to felt. 2. Use spray bottle to wet hands, then soap up hands and begin to very gently roll fleece ball between them. Don't use to much pressure or squeeze the ball too hard at this stage because it will cause folds in the fleece that are difficult to get out. You want to wind up with a smooth surface. 3. Keep rolling ball in hands adding slight amounts of pressure until desired size in reached. For this project the ball should be approx. 1,5 cm in diameter. During this process if the ball gets too dry simply apply more water with the spray bottle. If the ball becomes too wet and/or soapy roll the ball on towel to remove excess moisture. 4. Once the ball is the desired size, rinse it in the bowl of water squeezing out the soap. 5. Allow felt bead to dry overnight. To fast dry, place beads in a sock tied at the top and put in a dryer or hang it at the radiator. To create the necklace: 1. Cut a 26-inch length of bead string. 2. Tie a knot approximately 20 cm from one end of the string. 3. Thread the bead string through the needle. Make sure your needle is thin enough to go through a seed bead, and string 3 seed beads up to the knot. 4. Bring the needle through the top of the felt bead. 5. Bring the needle back through three previously strung seed beads. 6. Tie another knot to secure. 7. String approx. 2.5 cm worth of seed beads and tie another knot. 8. Repeat steps to create felt beads until the desired number have been strung. For this project we are using 9 beads for a 40 cm necklace. 9. When all the felt beads have been strung, string the seed beads for another 10 cm and tie on half of the magnetic clasp. 10. Repeat seed beading and tie the other half of clasp on the opposite side of the necklace. 1. So you have read instructions how to make a felt bead necklace. What else is it possible to make out of felt beads? What is it possible to make of felt wool in general? Can you imagine these things made of felted wool? Toys, dolls, jewellery (like earrings, bracelets, brooches), bowls for candies or cookies, different pieces of garment (e.g.coats, scarfs, mittens, hats ), home décor elements, wall hangings, bags, purses, trinkets, cell phone cases, pendants, lamp shades, animal accessories, what else? 51

Make the imperative form of the given verbs and insert them into the text. to take x 3 to have x 2 to give to start not to go to stay to get to speak to come to sit down to recover to tell to stand up to open to make to rest 1. that chewing gum out of your mouth. 2. straight. 3. me the details. 4. your book. 5. two tablets every evening. 6. a left and then a right. 7. in and. yourself at home. 8.
