Smarter Households Gamification To Reduce Energy Consumption
Background 5 year project to understand household energy use better, with the aim of lowering bills and reducing fuel poverty. Addressing a lack of practical ways to relate lifestyle choices to gas and electricity bills. Team of engineers, games designers and social scientists.
Aim and Objectives To present the householder with real-time energy consumption data, improving their ability to intelligently manage energy consumption and subsequent bills. Development of a Virtual Energy World Game and IMSS running on real-time energy usage in the home. Creation of multiform education packages for various age groups to establish low carbon lifestyles.
Team Structure Shuli Liu (PI) CU Mark Gaterell CU Elise Smithson CU Dan van der Horst UoE Rosie Day UoB Panagiotis Petridis CU Latif lmran Jalil CU Georgina Wood CU Anastasios G. Bakaoukas CU
Project Plan & Current Stage Year Investigating sensor, network and data storage options Year Developing the IMSS Participatory design input into the game Year Recruitment and selection of households Household trial and data collection Development of the game Year Trials of the IMSS and the game Household trial and data collection Year Educational package development and trials Finalise the game Final report
Testing And Systematic Review Lab Testing of 2 commercial IMSS. Test Home Testing IMSS (1 system). Systematic Review of IMSS to decide on a proposed IMSS Architecture.
June December Household Trial 20 Orbit Housing Association properties in Coventry area- in clusters. Smart meters and sensors installed into properties. The IMSS and the game provided to householders. Qualitative data collection: interviews, filmed game play etc. Looking at how IMSS and game are received and used by different members of the household. Everyday practices and family dynamics, and how games can become part of these.
IMSS Dashboard System Design
The Serious Game The serious game will exploit game technology and game design principles to rise above pure entertainment, adding layers of simulation, learning and decision making features to real life energy consumption related problems. The game play will allow for a more effective interpretation and implementation of sustainable energy policies (energy efficiency practices). Household owners will become aware of the potential impact (economic, environmental etc.) of their current individual or overall energy consumption patterns. The goal of the serious game is to create a challenging and fun experience for players while also shaping the player s behaviour towards energy saving issues. This can be accomplished by associating the player s performance and score to correct decisions and actual energy saved. The serious game is to be set in virtual environments that recreate daily situations of energy consumption related to the main scope of the project. The serious game must also to be able to offer a good game play experience being played either at a single player mode or at a community mode.
Participatory Design Coventry Mysteries Festival Gaining target audience input into the concepts, themes and content of our serious game. Rapid prototyping by participants. Group discussion of research team s prototypes and sketches to get early feedback.
Anticipated Outcomes 1. An IMSS 2. An interactive game based on personal energy consumption; 3. Education and engagement packages Enhanced end-user experience through innovative and engaging activities within a Serious Game environment; Case studies demonstrating principles and processes for embedding Serious Games in the energy consumption sector; Greater understanding of how to change energy use, lower household bills or reduce fuel poverty; Movements towards a low carbon future for the UK?
