4 HEALTH CARE SYSTEM The Dominican healthcare system has been reformed in the last several years, which is good news for everyone involved. The system was underfunded, inefficient, low-quality, and resulted in a lot of out-of-pocket expenses for the patients even the poores Dominican society. The new system is split into three clear tiers: Contributive regime financed by workers and their employers. Subsidized regime financed by the state for the poor, unemployed, disabled, and indigent. Contributive Subsidized regime financed by independent professionals, technical workers, and self-employed per themselves, but subsidized by the state (instead of an employer). As an expat working in the Dominican Republic, you are likely to be part of the Contributive regime, but it is worth clearing up details with your employer. Private health insurance or complementary insurance is essential to avoid excessive gaps in cover costs, i.e. what you have to pay for each visit or treatment. The public system reforms still have a long way to go.

5 MEDICAL EDUCATION In the Dominican Republic we have a 6 years long med. School system. There are 4 different cities which hold the mayor med. Schools : Santo Domingo, Santiago, San Pedro de Macoris and San Francisco de Macoris. Clinical rotations generally start around the 4th year and we can practice as junior doctors, and excluding a few exceptions the clinical rotations are done in teaching hospitals that do not belong to the university. After 16 semesters, students graduate and do a 12-month long internship in any locality of the country to complete the requirements for obtaining the medical license. After minimum 7 years since beginning medical school, we get to call ourselves medical doctors. We have an extensive chart of specialties as family medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, plastic surgery up to otorhinolaryngology. 6 TRANSPORTATION The most used form of transportation in the Dominican Republic is by private car. The even though public transportation is widely used, but it has to be done with the proper guidance because it s easy to get lost. As for the cost of public transportation: Taxi: 4-5 Dollars (most used, in airports and touristic areas can be more expensive) Metro of Santo Domingo:.75 cents of a dollar Bus:.60 cents of a dollar. Public Cars:.50 cents of a dollar.

8 MUST SEE Must-see destinations 1. Zona Colonial, Santo Domingo. Santo Domingo is considered the oldest city in the New World and in La Zona Colonial (or Colonial City) its rich culture and history can be appreciated. In the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, you can walk through cobblestone streets and appreciate the Spanish colonial architecture, music, art, museums, restaurants, gift shops and much more. Isla Saona, La Altagracia. The Saona Island is a tropical island that is a national reserve and part of the East National Park. Excursions to this island are organized daily in catamarans or motor boats. Bavaro-Punta Cana. Located in the easternmost point of the Dominican Republic, Bavaro-Punta Cana is well known for its 32 km of white sands and clear water beaches. Here you will find amazing beaches, balnearies, ecological reserves and luxury hotels. Los Tres Ojos, Santo Domingo. Los Tres Ojos (or The Three Eyes in English) is a limestone cave in Santo Domingo that has fresh water lakes. These caves used to be inhabited by Taino Indians, who were the first inhabitants of the Hispaniola island. The cave is open from 9 am to 5 pm. 9 CULTURAL DIFFERENCES Dominicans are very warm, hospitable and patriotic people, who pride them selfs in all three aspects. There also very interested in learning about different cultures and comparing them to their own.
