2 Victor Chang Awards for Excellence in Cardiovascular Journalism The media is vital in educating Australians about heart disease that at some time will affect almost everyone in the nation. Good journalism not only raises public awareness about these diseases but shapes public opinion and helps us all lead healthier lives. The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute was established in Sydney in 1994 to honour the vision and memory of pioneering cardiothoracic surgeon and humanitarian, the late Dr Victor Chang. Since its establishment, the Victor Chang has become internationally recognised as a centre-ofexcellence in heart research. In recognition of the pivotal role journalists play in informing the community about cardiovascular diseases, the Victor Chang presents the Victor Chang Awards for Excellence in Cardiovascular Journalism. These Awards honour print and broadcast journalists who excel in reporting and raising the profile of heart disease. Two awards will be presented, one to a metropolitan journalist and one to a regional/rural journalist. Entries will be judged by a committee of professionals selected by the Institute for their knowledge of cardiovascular health issues, public health and the media. To be eligible, stories must have appeared in the media between 1 May 2011 and 30 April The deadline for submissions is at 5pm on Monday 4 June Finalists will be notified in early July to allow them time to prepare for the award ceremony held during the annual Victor Chang Heart to Heart Ball in August/ September 2012.

3 Conditions of Entry Each entry must: Include a completed application form. Provide a short, typewritten explanation of the significance and context of the story (300 words max). Have been published, broadcast or televised between 1 May 2011 and 30 April Meet the following format-specific guidelines: Print, online articles: Each entry must include one original copy of the article(s). Television/Documentary: All entries must include standard DVD copies of the program and, where possible, a complete transcript. Each entry must be submitted on a separate disc. Discs may be duplicated for the awards ceremony. Radio: All entries must include two standard compact discs of the program and, where possible, a complete transcript. Journalists may submit a maximum of three entries. Medical Practitioners or other health professionals are not eligible for these awards unless they are working as journalists. Applicants who have received any financial or in kind sponsorship from a health sector corporation in relation to their entry must declare all details. Joint applications will be accepted, but each applicant must complete their own form. The judges decision will be final. Entries will not be returned.

4 Judging Panel The entries will be judged and the winners selected by a panel of judges, including journalists with experience in media, science and medicine. They are: Mr Angelos Frangopoulos (CEO, Australian News Channel) Ms Jill Margo, AM (The Australian Financial Review) Professor Robert Graham, AO (Executive Director, The Victor Chang Institute) A representative from the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance A scientist from the Victor Chang Judging Criteria The awards will be judged on the following criteria: 1. Accuracy 2. Impact 3. Newsworthiness 4. Presentation 5. A lucid understanding of heart/cardiovascular issues 6. Awareness raising of heart/cardiovascular diseases Victor Chang
