1 INTRODUCTION Achievement in the New Zealand legal profession is recognised by the award of a number of annual prizes and scholarships. This Practice Briefing lists the best-known prizes and scholarships which are awarded in New Zealand annually. Note that where an award is sponsored, the sponsor named is for the last time the award was made. AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND SPORTS LAW ASSOCIATION CONTRIBUTION TO SPORT AND SPORTS LAW AWARD: To recognise members of the association who have made substantial contributions to the development, integrity and professionalism of the sport and sports law industry. Award: Not specified. Dates: Awarded at the association s annual conference dinner. Entries are by nomination. Eligibility: Nominees must be current association members. Judging: Decided by the ANZSLA Board. An award is not necessarily made each year. Further information: AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND SPORTS LAW ASSOCIATION-CCH PAUL TRISLEY AWARD: Awarded for the best academic paper on a sports law topic by someone who has not presented a paper at the association conference. Award: A trophy, return airfares for presentation, a year s membership in ANZSLA. Dates: Entrants must submit a written paper of 5,000 to 12,000 words by the first Friday in September. Further information: AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND SPORTS LAW ASSOCIATION DENIS CALLINAN AWARD: Awarded to the member rendering commendable community service in the field of sports law.

2 Award: A trophy and the right to nominate an appropriate recipient of a grant of NZ$2,000 or A$2,000. Dates: Nominations are required by the first Friday in September. Judging: Decided by the ANZSLA Board. An award is not necessarily made each year. Eligibility: Nominees must be current association members. Further information: CLANZ-CHAPMAN TRIPP PUBLIC SECTOR IN-HOUSE LAWYER OF THE YEAR: Awarded to a lawyer who has made a valuable contribution to their organisation and to the legal profession through leadership and excellence in the provision of legal services aligned to the organisation s strategic goals, effective team management (where appropriate) or management of external advisers, and innovation and best practice. Award: The winner receives a scholarship package with a value of $5,000 to be spent on development activities for them and/or their team. Dates: Awarded at CLANZ Annual Conference (May each year). Entries are by nomination, with nominations opening around March each year. Eligibility: All lawyers employed or engaged by organisations in an in-house capacity and holding a current Law Society practising certificate. Further information: CLANZ-GREENWOOD ROCHE CHISNALL PRIVATE SECTOR IN-HOUSE LAWYER OF THE YEAR: Awarded to a lawyer who has made a valuable contribution to their organisation and to the legal profession through leadership and excellence in the provision of legal services aligned to the organisation s strategic goals, effective team management (where appropriate) or management of external advisers, and innovation and best practice. Award: The winner receives a scholarship package with a value of $5,000 to be spent on development activities for them and/or their team. Dates: Awarded at CLANZ Annual Conference (May each year). Entries are by nomination, with nominations opening around March each year. Eligibility: All lawyers employed or engaged by organisations in an in-house capacity and holding a current Law Society practising certificate. Further information: CLANZ-MAS YOUNG IN-HOUSE LAWYER OF THE YEAR: Awarded to a lawyer who has demonstrated their potential as a leading member of the in-house legal profession in New Zealand through excellence in the provision of legal services that have significantly contributed to their organisation s performance, academic ability and the ability to develop knowledge of areas of law not previously practised by the nominee, and leadership potential. 3 Award: The winner receives a scholarship package with a value of $5,000 to be spent on initiatives that will help them develop their career. Dates: Awarded at CLANZ Annual Conference (May each year). Entries are by nomination, with nominations opening around March each year. Eligibility: All lawyers employed or engaged by organisations in an in-house capacity and holding a current Law Society practising certificate. Nominees must have worked in an in-house counsel role for less than 5 years, and it should be no more than 10 years since their first date of admission as a barrister and solicitor in New Zealand or their original country of admission. Further information: CLANZ-WIGLEY & COMPANY COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION AWARD: Awarded to an in-house lawyer who has made an outstanding contribution to the community beyond their day job. Award: The winner will have $7,000 paid to their chosen cause, courtesy of Wigley & Company. Dates: Awarded at CLANZ Annual Conference (May each year). Entries are by nomination, with nominations opening around March each year. Eligibility: All lawyers employed or engaged by organisations in an in-house capacity and holding a current Law Society practising certificate. Further information: CLEARY MEMORIAL PRIZE: Awarded by the New Zealand Law Foundation for the young lawyer who shows the most promise of service to and through the legal profession. Award: The winner receives $5,000. Dates: Entries are by application and applications close at 5:00pm on 30 September each year. Eligibility: Applications are open to any barrister and/or solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand who has been admitted during the period of three years ending on 31 August of the year of the award. Judging: The winner will be the person adjudged as giving the most promise of service to and through the profession having regard to personal character, qualities of leadership as shown by achievement and service at school and at university, reliability, progress and enthusiasm displayed in practical training in preparation for the practice of law, academic attainments, and interest and participation in general activities. Further information: ENERGY LAW ASSOCIATION ESSAY AWARD: Three prizes are awarded for an essay on a legal topic of relevance to the energy and resource sector. Award: First prize $3,000, second prize $2,000, third prize $1,000. Page 3

4 Dates: Inaugural award made in 2013, with essay entries required by 29 November 2013 and proposed topic submission required by 16 August Eligibility: Applicants must have graduated with their first law degree within the past three years. Judging: No details. Further information: JF NORTHEY MEMORIAL BOOK AWARD: Awarded for the best legal monograph or text published in the preceding calendar year by a New Zealand-based author or authors. Award: The winner receives $2,000. Dates: Applications are normally required by 31 March for monographs or texts which have been published between 1 January and 31 December in the previous year. The Award is made at the Legal Research Foundation s annual general meeting, which is usually held in May. Eligibility: The book must be an original work. Second and subsequent editions are not eligible unless they have been rewritten to the extent that they may be termed new works. The author or at least one of the authors must be ordinarily resident in New Zealand at the time the book was either written, published or submitted for the Award. Judging: The award is judged anonymously by a panel appointed by the Foundation s Executive Council. Further information: LAW AND ECONOMICS ASSOCIATION OF NEW ZEALAND ACW MAUGHAN SCHOLARSHIP: Awarded for overseas study of law and economics, open to both academics and for postgraduate study. Award: Up to $10,000. Dates: Applications should be discussed with the association before submission. Further information: leanz.org.nz. LAW AND ECONOMICS ASSOCIATION OF NEW ZEALAND-FRIEDLANDER FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP: Awarded for overseas study of law and economics, open to both academics and for postgraduate study. Award: Up to $10,000. Dates: Applications should be discussed with the association before submission. Further information: leanz.org.nz. LEADR PRACTITIONER AWARDS: Awarded to nominated LEADR members who have contributed significantly to the growth and development of ADR. Award: The winner receives a Certificate of Recognition. 5 Eligibility: No eligibility criteria specified. Judging: The Awards Panel looks for creativity, innovation and flexibility in the use of ADR. Specific criteria are (1) the extent to which the organisation or person has actively sought to use new and different approaches; (2) demonstration of those approaches; and (3) demonstration of flexibility and a willingness to adjust their approach to meet differing demands. Further information: NEW ZEALAND LAW AWARDS LARGE LAW FIRM OF THE YEAR: Organised annually by Key Media s NZ Lawyer magazine for excellence in client service by large law firms. Eligibility: Awarded to firms with more than 25 partners which provide excellence in client service. NEW ZEALAND LAW AWARDS MID-SIZE LAW FIRM OF THE YEAR: Organised annually by Key Media s NZ Lawyer magazine for excellence in client service by medium-sized law firms. Eligibility: Awarded to firms with 6 to 24 partners which provide excellence in client service. NEW ZEALAND LAW AWARDS CAMPBELL MCPHERSON LTD BOUTIQUE LAW FIRM OF THE YEAR: Organised annually by Key Media s NZ Lawyer magazine for excellence in client service by boutique law firms. Eligibility: Awarded to firms with 1 to 5 partners, practising in one or a limited number of areas of practice, which provide excellence in client service. NEW ZEALAND LAW AWARDS IN-HOUSE COUNSEL TEAM OF THE YEAR: Organised annually by Key Media s NZ Lawyer magazine for an in-house client team which provides excellence in client service. Page 5

6 Eligibility: Awarded to an in-house counsel team which provides excellent client service and plays an integral role in the management and business. NEW ZEALAND LAW AWARDS CROMBIE LOCKWOOD REGIONAL/SUBURBAN LAW FIRM OF THE YEAR Organised annually by Key Media s NZ Lawyer magazine for a regional or suburban law firm providing excellence in client service. Eligibility: Awarded to a regional or suburban firm based outside the central business districts of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, or Dunedin which provide excellence in client service. NEW ZEALAND LAW AWARDS LEGAL PERSONNEL EMPLOYER OF CHOICE: Organised annually by NZ Lawyer magazine for law firms where workplace cultures recognise work/life balance. Eligibility: Awarded in three firm size categories to workplace cultures which recognise work/life balance. Judging: The award is decided by online employee voting. NEW ZEALAND LAW AWARDS BARRISTER OF THE YEAR: Organised annually by Key Media s NZ Lawyer magazine for a barrister who provides excellence in client service and enhances the reputation of the bar. Eligibility: Awarded to a barrister providing excellence in client service, demonstrating excellence in the development of the law and who is committed to the advancement of the reputation of the New Zealand bar. Judging: The award is decided by online voting. NEW ZEALAND LAW AWARDS COMMUNITY SERVICE IN LAW AWARD: Organised annually by Key Media s NZ Lawyer magazine to recognise an outstanding contribution to the community by a member of the legal profession. 7 Eligibility: Awarded to a firm, individual or group which has made outstanding contributions to the community by providing pro bono/not for profit legal advice or services to community groups and charitable organisations and/or participating or applying legal skills in voluntary humanitarian work.. Judging: The award is decided by online voting. NEW ZEALAND LAW FOUNDATION DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIP: Awarded by the New Zealand Law Foundation to encourage post-graduate study and legal research at New Zealand universities. Award: The scholarship is worth up to $35,000 a year for three years. Dates: Applications close on 1 October each year. Eligibility: The scholarship will be awarded to a doctoral candidate who will carry out research in a defined area of the law which is for the benefit of New Zealand and its legal system, and which encompasses the wider objectives of the New Zealand Law Foundation. Judging: Applications are managed by Universities New Zealand: nzlfdoctoral. Further Information: NEW ZEALAND LAW FOUNDATION ETHEL BENJAMIN SCHOLARSHIP: Awarded by the New Zealand Law Foundation to an outstanding woman law graduate to assist with post-graduate study. Award: The scholarship is worth $20,000 for study in New Zealand or $50,000 for overseas university study. Dates: Closing date for applications is 1 March each year. The award is normally announced in May or June. Eligibility: To be eligible, applicants must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, hold a New Zealand university degree (unless there are exceptional circumstances) and be accepted into a post-graduate course in law at a university which is acceptable to the Selection Committee. Judging: Applications are managed by Universities New Zealand: ethelbenjamin. Further information: NEW ZEALAND LAW FOUNDATION INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP: Awarded by the New Zealand Law Foundation to assist study in New Zealand or overseas aimed at making a significant contribution to New Zealand s law. Award: The fellowship is worth up to $125,000 a year. Dates: The closing date for applications is before 5:00pm on 1 September each year. Page 7

8 Eligibility: The subject matter to be researched must be of substantial public importance, and should be of such significance that the results of the research might be expected to lead to the reform or betterment of the laws of New Zealand. The research findings must be published. The award is open to persons who have demonstrated high ability in their chosen field and the ability to carry out the nominated research. Eligibility is not confined to members of any one profession or occupation, and the fellowship is open to legal practitioners, academics, judges, government officials and other persons with the required abilities. Further information: NEW ZEALAND SOCIETY OF CONSTRUCTION LAW ESSAY PRIZE: Two prizes for an essay on an approved topic in construction law of no more than 5,000 words. Award: First prize $3,000; runner-up $1,500. Dates: Closes 30 April Eligibility: New Zealand residents who are either undergraduate students at a New Zealand tertiary institution or have graduated from a New Zealand tertiary institution with their first degree or diploma within the last three years. RESOURCE MANAGEMENT LAW ASSOCIATION AWARDS: Awarded in various categories for a significant contribution to the advancement of the law, theory and practice of resource management. Further information: SIR IAN BARKER PUBLISHED ARTICLE AWARD: Awarded by the Legal Research Foundation for the best published article by a New Zealand-based author. Award: The winner receives $1,500. Dates: Entries must be made by ing a pdf of the paper before the specified closing date (normally in March). The award is announced at the Foundation s AGM, which is normally held in May or June. Eligibility: The Award is given for the best article, essay or discrete book chapter first published by a New Zealand-based author between 1 January and 31 December in the preceding year. Authors must be ordinarily resident in New Zealand at the time the article was written, published or submitted. Judging: The award is judged anonymously by a panel appointed by the Foundation s Executive Council.
