1 Coffee Cup High School Classroom Activity The Classroom Activity introduces students to the context of a performance task, so they are not disadvantaged in demonstrating the skills the task intends to assess. Contextual elements include: an understanding of the setting or situation in which the task is placed, potentially unfamiliar concepts that are associated with the scenario, and key terms or vocabulary students will need to understand in order to meaningfully engage with and complete the performance task. The Classroom Activity is also intended to generate student interest in further exploration of the key idea(s). The Classroom Activity should be easy to implement with clear instructions. Please read through the entire Classroom Activity before beginning the activity with students to ensure any classroom preparation can be completed in advance. Resources Needed: Each student should have access to a piece of paper and writing tool 1. Some method of displaying images 2 Learning Goal: The student will understand the context of the key ideas related to the topic: o Suspended Water Fountain o Hollow Fountain The student will understand the following vocabulary: o Water Pump: a machine that pumps water out of a container. o Hollow: used to describe a container that is empty. o Top Rim: used to describe the top, circular shaped edge of a cup. o Base: used to describe the bottom of a cup. o Cup Wall: used to describe the side of a cup. Definitions are provided here for the convenience of facilitators. Students are expected to understand these key terms as they arise in the context of the task, not to be able to recite the definitions. 1 Students who need an accommodation may use their preferred tool for writing. 2 Instead of displaying Figures 1, 2, and 3, the images can be used as handouts for students.

2 Coffee Cup Classroom Activity [Purpose: The facilitator s goal is to engage students in the concepts of a suspended water fountain and a hollow fountain, and to introduce students to terms that may be unfamiliar, but need to be understood before working on the Coffee Cup performance task.] Facilitator says: There are several types of water fountains. Some are decorative. Some are useful. How would you describe a water fountain? [Allow students to describe and discuss water fountains. Some students may describe drinking fountains. These are a type of water fountain because a motor causes the water to flow. Other students may describe decorative water fountains. Make sure students understand that water fountains are structures that have water cascading down them, or jetting into the air.] Facilitator says: Does anyone know what makes the water flow in a water fountain? [Lead students to the key concept that a water pump, a motor, is used to circulate the water to create the fountain.] [Facilitator displays and describes Figure 1 Suspended Water Fountain graphic.] Figure 1. Suspended Water Fountain Facilitator says: Figure 1 shows a faucet, much like the one that turns on the water outside, floating over a large cup. There is a stream of water coming out of the faucet and flowing into the cup. Facilitator says: Has anyone seen a fountain that seemed to be pouring from midair? [If any students have, allow one or two students to describe the suspended fountain. If no students have seen a suspended fountain, continue to the next statement.] Facilitator says: To prepare for the Coffee Cup Performance Task, you need to be familiar with suspended fountains and with some vocabulary that is associated with water fountains.

3 Facilitator says: A suspended fountain works because there is a clear, rigid, plastic pipe that is hidden in the falling water. How does the hidden pipe make it seem like the faucet is floating in the air? [Allow students to respond. Lead the students to understand that the pipe holds the faucet in the air.] Facilitator says: Like all water fountains, suspended water fountains use a water pump to push the water up the hidden pipe. Facilitator says: We have examined how a suspended fountain works, now let s talk about Hollow Fountains. [Facilitator displays and describes Figure 2 Hollow Fountain graphic.] Figure 2. Hollow Fountains Hollow Water [Picture Description: Figure 2 shows the faucet above the container like the earlier picture, but it is connected to the container with the clear, rigid, plastic pipe. The fountain does not appear to be running. Water is shown to be in the top part of the cup, and the bottom part of the cup is empty.] Facilitator says: Sometimes fountains have a false bottom so the water does not have to fill the entire container. When that happens, the bottom of the container is hollow. The water pump is placed in the part of the container where the water is. Facilitator says: What would be the advantage of having part of the fountain be hollow? [Allow students to respond. Possible responses include: saving water and the water pump not having to force the water as far up the pipe.] Facilitator says: Why is this type of fountain called a hollow fountain? [Allow students to respond. Lead students to key concept: The bottom part of the fountain is empty and that is why it is called hollow.]

4 Facilitator says: Are there any questions about suspended or hollow fountains? [Allow for student questions.] Facilitator says: What comes to mind when you think about coffee? [Allow students to respond. There is no right or wrong answer here, this discussion is just a transition from fountains to coffee.] [Facilitator displays the Figure 3 Coffee Pot and Coffee Cup graphic.] Figure 3. Coffee Pot Coffee Cup [Picture Description: Figure 3 is a picture of a coffee pot with a bulb container with a handle and a spout. The spout is where the coffee is poured from. There is also coffee cup with three parts. Part A is the top or edge of the cup, it is circular shaped. Part B is the bottom of the cup, it is circular shape. It is smaller than the top. Part C is the side of the cup.] Facilitator says: In the picture, Part A is the circular top of the coffee cup. What is the top of the cup commonly called? [Allow students to respond. Possible student responses may include: rim and lip. Lead students to key concept: In the performance task it is referred to as the rim of the cup. Facilitator should write rim on the graphic.] Facilitator says: What other things have rims? [Allow students to respond. Possible responses include basketball hoops and car tires.] Facilitator says: In the picture, Part B is the bottom of the cup. In the Coffee Cup Performance Task, this is called the base. Why do you think this part of the cup is called the base? [Allow students to respond. Possible responses include it holds the rest of the cup and it is the bottom of the cup. The important thing is that students know what is being referred to when the performance task refers to the base of the cup. Facilitator should write base on the graphic.]

5 Facilitator says: In the picture, Part C is the side of the cup. In the Coffee Cup Performance Task, this is called the cup wall. Why do you think this part of the cup is called the cup wall? [Allow students to respond. Possible responses include it holds the liquid in and it is vertical. The important thing is that students know what is being referred to when the performance task refers to the cup wall. Facilitator should write cup wall on the graphic.] Facilitator says: Are there any questions? [Allow for student questions.] Facilitator says: You are ready to complete the Coffee Cup Performance Task.
