Agile Foundation Agile Foundation This is a 2 day foundation course including exam. The course is in two sections. The first introduces Agile as a set of principles that influence the way we select, scope, analyse, develop and deploy software intensive systems. By walking through the stages involved in producing a software system we consider aspects such as business cases and marketability as well as applying specific techniques such as User Stories to break down and specify the customers need. We discuss the development practices employed by agile teams such as Test Driven Development and how these approaches lead to increased flexibility in addition to a reduction in the incidence of defects. This section closes with consideration of the issues involved in selecting when and how the system should be deployed and the mechanisms applied to ensure that the system is fit for purpose. The second section of this course is concerned specifically with the Scrum approach to managing and delivering an Agile project. We review traditional project management practices and how we can manage risk and uncertainty of projects while providing a high quality of feedback and minimising up front costs. The Scrum framework is discussed in detail including the mechanics of managing the Product Backlog as well as the detail of planning and delivering in Sprints. Topics include: The benefits of progressive elaboration Valtech s product hierarchy A Top-down approach to requirements gathering Product features and return on investment Effective stories and acceptance criteria Stories as a vehicle for team collaboration Managing the product backlog Prerequisites: Agile Essentials, Certified Scrum Master Audience: Product Owners, Product Managers, and Business Analysts Duration: 1 Day Lab to Lecture Ratio: 40/60 This course brings together the Scrum framework along with a variety of tools and techniques from other schools including other Agile methodologies, Lean Thinking and traditional methods. Throughout both sections discussion is encouraged both in the group as a whole and in small group practical sessions. The course culminates in an exam successful completion of which will result in delegates being awarded the Valtech Agile Foundation certificate. 3
Agile Engineering Agile Engineering This is a 5 day hands-on course including exam. Delegates will be introduced to the engineering techniques that enable business agility. The focus is placed on how choices made during development impact the cost of an application over it s life-time. In particular the traits of maintainable code, effective design and flexible approach are encouraged. The course begins with a re-cap of the principles of object oriented design, a look at effective use of UML for communicating design decisions and a review of common design patterns. The language and notations introduced here will be used throughout the course. The bulk of the course it focused on completing practical design and development activities through the application of Test Driven Development and refactoring. This include coverage of mock objects and discussion of some different styles of test driving application development. To close we look at the wider environment that agile development takes place in and examine how techniques such as continuous integration can aid the development process. The course is available in C#.NET and JAVA. It is possible for aspects of this course to be tailored to specific development environments or extracted as stand alone workshops. Topics include: The Agile Engineering environment Build and deployment environments Over-view of configuration management patterns Object Oriented Design Domain modelling Advance OO principles Overview of UML 2.0 Introduction to design patterns Architectural patterns Refactoring Test Driven Development Testing legacy code Continuous Integration Prerequisites: Software development experience using C# or Java Audience: Developers Duration: 5 Days Lab to Lecture Ratio: 40/60 5
Agile Requirements Agile Requirements This is a 2 day course providing delegates with knowledge and experience in a range of practices that support identification, organisation, prioritisation and specification of requirements in an Agile project. The course is in two sections. The first introduces the core concepts of requirements engineering and investigates how the way we think about requirements impacts the effectiveness and agility of our project teams. In this section we will also review some of the core agile patterns and frameworks and identify the challenges that these create for those individuals tasked with providing requirements. During the second section of this course delegates form small groups and take an idea from its inception through each stage of the requirements process as follows: Express the project vision Identify critical success factors Use personas to better understand the target use base (and drive prioritisation) Use Minimum Marketable Features to identify and prioritise increments and inform the release strategy Identify user stories understand how to express non-end user requirements Split stories learn a set of axis that enables easy splitting of stories Express acceptance criteria for user stories Topics include: Agile thinking and Requirements Fitting Requirements activities into and Agile Life-Cycle Product Visioning Understanding what success looks like Understanding stakeholders and users Planing for incremental delivery using Minimum Marketable Features Using Personas to describe user needs User Stories Splitting Stories for planning Specification by Example Prerequisites: Basic understanding of Agile principles and practice Audience: All of those involved in requirements elicitation, specification or Product Ownership Duration: 2 Days Lab to Lecture Ratio: 60/40 Throughout the course discussion is encouraged and facilitated in order to maximise the opportunities for learning from one another. This is most prevalent in part two as different groups will experience the strengths and weaknesses of alternate approaches and share their observations. 7
Effective Test Driven Development Effective Test Driven Development This is a 2 day experiential course in the effective application of Test Driven Development. While TDD encourages us to build great code little by little with the focus of creating new behaviour, refactoring provides a disciplined approach to changing the design of existing code while behaviour remains fixed. Together these practices allow us to keep software flexible and enable agility. This course combines the practices of TDD, Refactoring and Pair Programming with the realisation that not all existing code has been built this way. Delegates are provided with a grounding in TDD through a range of practical exercises. These increase in complexity as we consider both creating new code and safely modifying and building upon an existing code base. All exercises involve delegates pairing together in order to provide support and insight as well as to introduce this highly effective programming discipline. The course will include taught sections on the disciplines of TDD, growing code using Mock Objects, placing legacy code under test and the software design implications of a test riven approach. The course is run with a high ratio of instructors to delegates in order to provide time for one on one support. The course can be delivered using a variety of programming languages, IDEs and platforms. Topics include: Introducing Test Driven Development Pair programming Driving Development from Tests Refactoring Introducing Mocking Working with Legacy Code Reviewing Development Practices Prerequisites: Development experience using Java or C#.NET Audience: Developers Duration: 2 Days Lab to Lecture Ratio: 60/40 9
Agile Quality Assurance Agile Quality Assurance This course brings together the range of Agile practices that when applied together will assure delivery of a quality product in line with customer expectations. The course begins with a discussion foused around understanding how we can approach quality and what Agile principles can teach us about the way that we address quality requirements. Delegates will progress from feature specification through to automation of end-to-end functional tests to detailed, test driven, implementation. Many organisations have attempted to implement automation of functional and Unit tests with disappointing results including a high cost of maintenance and fragility in the face of changing requirements. This course will teach proven test design and implementation practices that assist in improving the maintainability of tests leading to a high return on investment though a rich regression test suite. Topics include: What is Quality Quantifying quality Driving application behaviour through specification by example Building executable specifications Automating Web application testing using Selenium Understanding Behaviour Driven vs. Test Driven Development Driving low level implementation Designing maintainable tests Verifying system performance Prerequisites: Development experience using Java or C#.NET Audience: Developers and Testers Duration: 3 Days Lab to Lecture Ratio: 60/40 11
Introduction to Kanban Introduction to Kanban Kanban can be seen as either a process for Software Development or a approach to process improvement, in fact it is both. This course will guide delegates through the principles, practices and rationale that underpin the use of Kanban in a range of contexts including areas such as software product development, support and maintenance and operations. The course emphasises the value of visual management as well as exploring the relevance of lean thinking to software delivery professionals. This highly experiential course will provide the opportunity for delegates to experience Kanban in action as well as learning the skills necessary to model their existing process using a Kanban boards. Delegates will begin with simple workflow modelling and progress through increasingly complex scenarios making use of swim-lanes, recognising where classes of service expose differing cost of delay and exposing distinct work item types. The course closes with a set of approaches to process improvement including identification of waste and application of Theory of Constraints to expose and address bottlenecks. Topics include: Visual Management Why Lean? Why Kanban? Loving from Visual Management to Kanban Limiting Work in Process Managing Flow Using Cadence Advanced Kanban Practices Process Improvement Prerequisites: None Audience: All Team Members Duration: 2 Days Lab to Lecture Ratio: 60/40 13
