2 In the area of language arts, Fifth Grade students will be able to: Explain when to use and apply word structure, sentence structure, and prediction to decode and understand the meaning of words in context Use cues to read words, decode unknown words, and decide meanings of words. Recognize frequently encountered words and increase the number of words recognized throughout the school year Know the meanings of frequently encountered words in grade level readings and when listening Fluently read grade level texts Determine the meanings of words and phrases using strategies and resources Analyze how characters and communities reflect life in quality literature Analyze the structure, elements, style, and purpose of narrative genre (including historical fiction, tall tales, science fiction, fantasy, and mystery). Analyze how characters traits and setting define plot, climax, the role of dialogue, and how problems are resolved Explain how authors use literary devices (including exaggeration and metaphors) to develop characters, themes, plot, and functions of heroes, anti-heroes, and narrators Analyze informational genre including advertising, experiments, editorials, and atlases Identify and describe informational text patterns including compare/contrast, cause/effect, and problem/solution. Explain how authors use text features to enhance understanding of key and supporting ideas. Connect personal knowledge, experiences, and understanding of the world to themes and perspectives in text Retell by summarizing grade level narrative and informational text Analyze global themes, universal truths, and principles to create a deeper understanding by drawing conclusions, making inferences, and synthesizing Apply knowledge from grade-level science, social studies, and mathematical texts Self-monitor comprehension when reading or listening to text by automatically applying and discussing strategies Select an appropriate text (from a known genre) for modeling of particular writing purposes including theory/evidence, cause/effect, and persuasive writing Apply shared standards (using student/class created rubrics) to assess quality and accuracy of their own writing and the writing of others and also understand the author s purpose and viewpoint and how that viewpoint can affect others Be enthusiastic about reading and do substantial reading and writing on their own Write a complete narrative piece (such as mystery, tall tale, or historical fiction) using time period and setting to enhance the plot, demonstrating the role of heroes, anti-heroes, and narrator, as well as showing the problem and how it is resolved Write poetry based on a wide variety of grade appropriate poetry

3 Write a position piece that demonstrates a central idea and supporting details (such as position/evidence) using multiple headings and subheadings Use the writing process to produce and present a research project Set a purpose, consider audience, and replicate authors styles and patterns when writing Apply a variety of pre-writing strategies to generate, sequence and structure ideas Clearly communicate information using coherent, mechanically sound paragraphs when writing Revise drafts by indentifying areas of the piece where organization and the flow of ideas can be improved Proofread and edit writing using grade-level checklists and other appropriate resources Use personal style and voice to enhance writing in both narrative and informational writing Use (when writing) compound subjects and predicates, nouns, pronouns, articles, conjunctions, hyphens, commas, and colons Correctly spell frequently encountered words and use structural cues and other sources for less frequently encountered words Write neatly and legibly Be enthusiastic about writing and learning to write Use common grammatical structures when speaking to express ideas Communicate effectively with different audiences and for different purposes such as research, explanation, and persuasion Speak effectively to indicate emotions, create excitement, and emphasize meaning in presentations Understand how language differs from early American history to current day America Engage in discussions with different groups to construct meaning Discuss narratives while varying pitch, volume, and pace of speech to emphasize meaning Respond to multiple texts by analyzing content, interpreting the message, and evaluating the purpose Plan and deliver persuasive presentations or reports using an organizational pattern that supports the point they want to make and varying the pitch, volume, and pace of speech to emphasize meaning Ask questions based on the argument presented by a speaker when listening to or viewing a presentation Listen or view a presentation demonstrating appropriate listening skills in small and large group settings Understand how verbal and non-verbal strategies increase the understanding of a spoken message Recognize different reasons for communicating Listen or view and discuss a variety of genre and compare responses to those of their peers Respond thoughtfully to both classic and contemporary texts

4 Respond to different texts in order to clarify meaning, make connections, take a position, or show understanding In the area of math, Fifth Grade students will be able to: Understand the meaning of division of whole numbers (with and without remainders) Relate division to fractions and to repeated subtraction Relate division of whole numbers with remainders to the form Find the prime factorization of numbers 2-50 Express in exponential notation Understand that every whole number greater than 1 is either a prime number or can be expressed as a product of primes Understand the relative magnitude of ones, tenths, and hundredths and the relationship of each place value to the place to its right Understand percentages as parts out of 100, use % notation, and express part of a whole as a percentage Understand a fraction as a statement of division Express two fractions with a common denominator Use denominators less that 12 or factors of 100 Find the product of two unit fractions with small denominations using an area model Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators through 12 and/or 100 using a common denominator Multiply a whole number by the powers of 10:.01,.1, 1, 10, 100, 1000 and identify patterns Divide numbers by 10, 100, and 1,000 using mental strategies Multiply one digit and two digit whole numbers by decimals up to two decimal places Use mathematical statements to represent a situation involving the addition and subtraction of fractions Solve problems that involve finding sums and differences of fractions with unlike denominators (using knowledge of equivalent fractions) Solve problems involving fractions and decimals including rounding of answers and checking for reasonableness Solve for the unknown in equations Express fractions and decimals as percentages (and vice versa) Express ratios in several ways given the situation Recognize and find equivalent ratios Recognize the equivalence of 1 liter, 1,000 ml, and 1,000 cm cubed Include conversions among liters, milliliters, and cubic centimeters Know the units of measure of volume and their abbreviations (cubic centimeters, cubic meter, cubic inches, cubic feet, and cubic yards) Compare the relative size of one cubic inch to one cubic foot and one cubic centimeter to one cubic meter Convert measurements of the following: length, weight, area, volume, and time

5 Represent relationships between areas of rectangles, parallelograms, and triangles using models Understand and know how to use the area formula of a triangle (A=1/2 b x h) and represent using models and manipulatives Understand and know how to use the area formula for a parallelogram using a model Build solids with unit cubes and state their volumes Use filling, counting, or measuring to find volume Define cube and rectangular prism Solve applied problems about the volumes of rectangular prisms using multiplication, division, and appropriate units Associate an angle with a certain amount of turning Know that angles are measured in degrees Understand that 90, 180, 270, and 360 are associated respectively with ¼, ½, ¾, and full turns Measure angles on a protractor and classify them as acute, obtuse, right, or straight Identify and name angles on a straight line and vertical angles Find unknown angles in a problem involving angles on a straight line, angles surrounding a point, and vertical angles Know that angles on a straight line add up to 180 and angles surrounding a point add up to 360 Understand why the sum of the interior angles of a quadrilateral is 360 and use the properties to solve problems Recognize right, isosceles, and equilateral triangles Recognize parallelograms (including rectangles and rhombuses) Recognize trapezoids Read and interpret line graphs Solve problems based on line graphs (including problems with two or three line graphs on the same axis and distance time graphs) and compare different data Construct line graphs from tables of data with labeled axis and scale Given a set of data, find and interpret mean and mode Solve multi-step problems involving means

6 In the area of science, Fifth Grade students will be able to: Generate scientific questions based on observations, investigations, and research Design and conduct scientific investigations Use tools and equipment for the investigations Use metric measurement devices Construct charts and graphs from data and observations Analyze information from data tables and graphs and identify patterns in data Evaluate data, claims, and personal knowledge through discussions Communicate and defend findings of observations and investigations Draw conclusions from sets of data from multiple trials of an investigation Use multiple sources of information to evaluate strengths and weaknesses of claims, arguments, or data Describe limitations in personal and scientific knowledge Identify the need for evidence in making scientific decisions Demonstrate concepts through various illustrations, performances, models, exhibits, and activities Design solutions to problems using technology Describe the effect humans and other organisms have on the balance of the natural world Describe how science and technology have advanced because of the contributions of many people throughout history and across cultures Distinguish between contact and non-contact forces Demonstrate contact and non-contact forces to change the motion of an object Describe what happens when two forces act on an object in the same or opposing directions Describe how constant motion is the result of balanced forces and how changes in motion are caused by a non-zero (unbalanced) force Relate the size of change in motion to the strength of unbalanced forces and the mass of an object Explain the motion of an object relative to its point of reference Describe the motion of an object in terms of distance, time & direction, as the object moves, and in relationship to other objects Illustrate how motion can be measured and represented on a graph Identify the purpose of selected animal systems and how they work together Explain that the traits of an individual are influenced by the environment and genetics and distinguish between acquired and inherited traits Explain how behavioral characteristics and physical characteristics of animals help them survive in their environment Measure the weight and mass of objects Measure volumes of liquids in milliliters and liters Compare and contrast the states of matter

7 In the area of social studies, Fifth Grade students will be able to: Use maps to locate people in the desert Southwest, the Pacific Northwest, the nomadic nations of the Great Plains, and the woodland people east of the Mississippi River Compare how American Indians in the desert Southwest and the Pacific Northwest adapted to or modified the environment Describe Eastern Woodland American Indian life with respect to governmental and family structures, trade, and views on property ownership and land use Explain technological developments that made sea exploration possible Use case studies of individual explorers and stories of life in Europe to compare the goals, obstacles, motivations, and consequences for European exploration and colonization of the Americas Use maps to locate the major regions of Africa (northern Africa, western Africa, central Africa, eastern Africa, and southern Africa) Describe life and cultural development of people living in western Africa before the 16 th century with respect to economic and family structures and the growth of states, towns, and trade Describe the convergence of Europeans, American Indians, and Africans in North America after 1492 from the perspectives of the three groups Use primary and secondary sources to compare Europeans and American Indians who converged in the western hemisphere after 1492 with respect to governmental structure and views on property ownership and land use Explain the impact of European contact on American Indian cultures by comparing the different approaches used by the British and French in their interactions with American Indians Describe the Columbian Exchange and its impact on Europeans, American Indians, and Africans Describe significant developments in Southern colonies including patterns of settlement and control, the establishment of Jamestown, development of one-crop economies, relationships with American Indians, the development of colonial representatives, and the development of slavery Describe significant developments in the New England colonies including patterns of settlement and control, relations with American Indians, growth of agricultural and non-agricultural economies, the development of government, and religious tensions in Massachusetts which led to the establishment of other colonies in New England Describe the significant developments in the Middle Colonies including patterns of settlement and control, the growth of the Middle Colonies, the Dutch settlements, and immigration patterns leading to ethnic diversity Compare the regional settlement patterns of the Southern colonies, New England, and the Middle Colonies
