Department: Civil Engineering Faculty: Engineering College: Science and Engineering sojobi.adebayo@lmu.edu.ng Office Location: B006, Ground Floor, New College Building Consultation Hours: Mon: 4-6pm Course Content Body of knowledge (BOK) for Engineers, Estimation and Feasibility Studies, Finance and Economics for Engineers, Laws pertaining to Engineering Practice, Case Studies and Contemporary issues in Engineering Practice Course Description This course introduces students to the basic concepts of engineering economy and law for engineers. Building on the foundation of GEC217 (Engineer-in-Society II), it familiarizes students with the practical aspect of engineering as it relates nitty-gritty of engineering functions and living within the larger society. This is achieved by introducing the students to the Body of Knowledge required of Engineers, knowledge of estimation and feasibility studies, insight into finance and economics for engineers, laws pertaining to engineering practice and practical case studies on contemporary issues in Engineering Practice. Course Justification Awareness of the requirements for being a professional engineer will aid students in managing their career effectively. Likewise, knowledge of methods of the various estimation methods will guide them on the most effective method to use on any engineering project. Knowledge of finance and various finance channels will help the young engineering students navigate the world of finance which plays a crucial role in engineering practice. In addition, awareness of the knowledge of laws guiding engineering practice will help safeguard the students from avoidable 1
2 pitfalls in their professional life. Discussion of Case studies will help the students understand the practical importance of such laws in engineering practice. Contemporary issues in engineering practice ensure the students stay abreast of salient and hot information that affects them as members of the society and helps them make informed decisions. Course objectives At the end of this course, students would be able to: (i) Understand the dynamic world of professional engineering practice (ii) Estimating engineering projects and carry out feasibility studies (iii) Comprehend the interplay between local and global economy and economics (iv) Appreciate the roles of engineering and other fields in the local and global economy. (v) Be informed about various economic and financial instruments available to engineers (vi) Understand engineering principles and law guiding engineering practice. (vii) Keep abreast of hot and salient contemporary issues in engineering practice Course Requirements To gain maximally from this course, students are required to consult materials in the library (textbooks, journals and online materials) on topics outlined in the course content. Students are expected to be sound in basic calculations which they will find useful in estimation and feasibility studies. It is also expected that students are able to comprehend concepts that are unique to engineering practice. Method of Grading- S/N Grading Score (%) 1. Students are also given takehome assignments and term papers which further buttresses the course objectives. 2
3 LECTURE CONTENT Week 1: Body of knowledge for Engineers i. Students should be aware of the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for professional engineering practice ii. Students should develop a plan to acquire those knowledge, skills and attitudes Requirements for professional engineer engineering practice such as professional associations, code of practice and body of knowledge, the importance of those requirements, discussion of the knowledge, skills and attitudes which form the body of knowledge; local and international knowledge and best practices required; skill sets such as leadership, communication, technology, interpersonal skills, time management and teamwork; attitudes such as commitment, vision, high expectations, self-confidence, curiosity and creativity 1. Discuss the importance of joining professional associations, code of practice and body of knowledge to engineering practice 2. Week 2: Feasibility Studies i. Students should be able to write an effective and persuasive feasibility report ii. Students should evaluate and access appropriate funding mechanism for the proposed business or project iii. Students should be able to evaluate a proposed project or business opportunity using various evaluation methods 3

5 Week 4: Finance for Engineers i. Students should understand the importance of finance to engineering functions in organisations and their personal lives. ii. Awareness of available financial channels and associated costs. iii. Enlightenment about the bottlenecks in accessing funds and how to mitigate them. iv. Identify and avoid misconceptions about finance and means of accessing them. v. Gain strategic financial information and education which they can use for their professional growth and development as entrepreneurial engineers. Importance of finance to engineers and engineering practice; factors considered in accessing funds such as character, capacity, conditions and collateral; various financing options such as debt financing, equity financing and gift financing i. Discuss the various financing methods: their uses, advantages and disadvantages. ii. Give one example of each financing method that relate to engineering practice i. Leach, J. Students would be well informed about various economic instruments they can utilize to achieve their goals. v. Students would appreciate the roles engineering and other fields play in the Nigerian and global economy. Major problems facing every economy, types of economy: traditional, planned, freemarket, and mixed economy; global crisis of 2002; economic thinking; law of comparative advantage; factors affecting demand and supply; government and market; roles of engineers in engineering, roles of engineers in local and global economy i. Students should be aware of environmental management systems used in engineering practice iii. Students should be aware of their roles in safeguarding the environment Sources of environmental laws; waste management including duty of care, waste management licences; environmental regulations and penalties for breaches; water pollution; land pollution; air pollution; environmental impact assessment; environmental management systems i. List the environmental regulators in Nigeria and their roles ii. Discuss the importance of environmental management systems in Engineering practice Week 9: Construction Disputes and Mechanisms i. Students should know how to make claims and legal basis for such claims as related to engineering practice ii. Students should be aware of common construction dispute mechanisms iii.
