1 Programme: BSc Hons International Hospitality Management Course Title: HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT Course Code: HRMT301 Credit hours: 3 Prerequisite/s: Nil Co-requisite/s: Nil Lecturer/s: Ms. Ioanna Karanikola Tel Ext: 5024 Lecturer s address: Ioanna.Karanikola@emiratesacademy.edu Course Rationale and Description This course provides an introduction to the nature of Human Resource Management (HRM), its evolution throughout the years which shaped it to what it is today, a strategic partner in the organisation and critical to the success of the business. The course will also offer an insight into current challenges in attracting, retaining, training, developing, compensating, engaging and committing employees in a highly competitive and global environment. Teaching and Learning Philosophy Students are expected to actively participate during the teaching sessions, to share experiences that would positively enhance the learning experience overall. The coverage of the theoretical background will be complemented with video cases and workshops. The course will look at the evolution of the profession, its current importance and the areas that an HR professional can work in and the external factors influencing it. Contribution to Graduate Profile: 1. Overview of HRM practices within the hospitality industry. 2. Knowledge related to HRM concepts and trends. 3. Identify HRM as a possible career path. Specific Learning Outcomes Knowledge: Upon completion of this course, students will know how to: LO 1. Provide an overview of strategic human resources in the hospitality industry. LO 2. Identify and discuss the different acts in relation to employment law. LO 3. Plan for staffing by understanding the importance of a job analysis and identifying different approaches to job design. LO 4. Recruit, select and evaluate the human resource recruitment/selection process based on metrics. LO 5. Discuss human capital investment provided by hospitality organizations. LO 6. Describe the use of performance management systems and approaches to measuring performance. HRMT Page 1

2 LO 7. Describe decision areas, concepts and tools used to manage employee compensation. Identify different pay structures and describe relevant theories, pay programs that recognize employee contributions with pay. LO 8. Identify employee benefits and the provision of employee benefits programs from an employee perspective and an organizational perspective. LO 9. Understand the impact of employee development and succession planning to the individual and the hospitality organization. Skill Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate: LO 1. What to include in the HR budget LO 2. What to incorporate in a training budget LO 3. How to analyse the various elements when calculating return on investment (ROI) LO 4. How to calculate different HR metrics LO 5. How to calculate the cost per hire Autonomy and Responsibility Competence Upon completion of this course, students will be able to state the following reporting, regulating or ethical considerations: LO 1. In regards to best practices concerning employment law LO 2. In regards to best practices used by HR managers within the industry Self Development Competence Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the need to continually research and up skill the following areas: LO 1. Depending on the topic of interest and selected by the students, research will be conducted to complete their group project in the areas of training, IT, performance management, employee benefits, employee development, recruitment, employee selection, human capital investment, HR Management in the 21 st century: Challenges for the Future within the hospitality industry. Role in Context Competence Upon completion of this course, students will be able to effectively contribute to the following activities or endeavours: LO 1. Coursework 60% Final Exam 40% Coursework 60% Coursework is split in two components as outlined below: Mid-term exam (25%) - will assess LO1-LO5. Group Project (35%) - refer to group project briefing. The group project will assess learning outcomes linked to the topic that the students will choose to research on. Exam 40% Final exam will be scheduled for 2 hours. It will include true/false, multiple choice, definitions, essay questions and calculations. Final exam will assess LO1 - LO9. Learning Resources: Textbooks: Dennison, D. F. and Weber, M. R.
