2 Sturdy Memorial Hospital has been a MEDITECH site for 20 years. Two and a half years ago we purchased the Dell solution for our MEDITECH system. I was and still am impressed with Dell s level of MEDITECH knowledge. Dell has become an important part of this hospital s immediate and future planning. The stability and expandability of the system allowed us to create the infrastructure for PACS, Disaster recovery, redundancy and EMR. I have worked with MEDITECH systems for about 12 years. In 2003, I ran the project to convert our MEDITECH environment from DG Aviions to Dell OSAL Win2K servers. I was very impressed with the support we were given during the conversion. At the same time we switched to MAGIC OSAL, we also put in a storage area network that supports MEDITECH data storage as well as our normal Windows 2000 server based storage. The only problem we have had to deal with is a PowerVault tape library issue and Dell provided excellent support to help us solve this tape library problem. Grays Harbor Community Hospital is more than a little off the beaten path and the speed with which Dell had techs and parts on site was amazing. Currently we are consulting with Dell Professional Services on implementing a Citrix Secure Gateway solution to provide our physicians remote access to our MEDITECH system. 3 As a Dell customer since 1999 when we first started deploying Dell machines to the desktop (and later Dell servers in support of our non-meditech applications) we have been very pleased with Dell s hardware and support services. Dell has consistently provided us with high quality hardware at a very reasonable price. For that reason the decision to replace our existing Data General servers with Dell OSAL servers was seen as a normal extension of the course of action originally started in Model portrayal In August 2003 we started working with both Dell and MEDITECH to establish a game plan for the system upgrade. Early into the process we decided to migrate our existing storage environment to the newer Dell/EMC 2 SAN technology. Also, to accommodate additional MEDITECH modules in the future we decided to move from three servers to four. The Dell and MEDITECH people we worked with were very accommodating to our needs and they worked with us to develop a plan that satisfied those needs. The Dell personnel we worked with were very knowledgeable regarding MEDITECH's operating environment as well as MEDITECH's policies and procedures. It was evident that the Dell Implementation Staff and the MEDITECH Systems Support Group have worked together - so much so that they were on first name basis. This really made us feel that we were dealing with a single team and not two separate organizations. On Saturday, January 24th of this year we made the cutover. We planned on a 12-hour downtime and completed all our tasks in 10 hours. Dell personnel were on site to monitor each step of the cutover. MEDITECH support staff was there to validate that each of our 27 modules was functioning according to specifications. We started to research the products that are "MEDITECH" certified. I feel Dell comes in with a very good solution and with reasonable prices to upgrade to quicker servers which we were in great need for. We also went with the Dell/EMC SAN solution, and I feel this is going to work out well for the hospital. Dell managed the rack and stack and did an excellent job with the equipment and also the wiring. I had two field engineers from Dell who came out to load our servers have a great amount of knowledge and had performed a lot of MEDITECH installs in the past. This work was done at the utmost level of service. We are to go live in a week and a half, and then we will be able to judge better the ROI for this equipment, which I feel will be a good investment. 4 When EMC announced the DG line of servers would only be supported through 2005, Benefis Healthcare embarked on a mission to select a new hardware platform for MEDITECH servers. After carefully reviewing MEDITECH s supported hardware vendors, Benefis chose Dell for its reputation, cost and reliability. The first Dell PowerEdge OSAL server was installed in May of 2002 and was configured as a SCSI solution connected to a PowerVault 200. It has performed flawlessly with no failures whatsoever. Another initiative that is important to Benefis is effective storage management that enables efficient use of storage, reliability using hardware raid technology and fail over processes, performance improvements and finally capabilities to enable disaster recovery. Benefis knew these characteristics were contained in SAN technology, but were unable to implement it due to the initial capital expenditure. When Dell and EMC introduced their affordable CX line, Benefis knew this was their opportunity to enter the SAN market. In the spring of 2003, Benefis implemented two Dell PowerEdge OSAL servers direct attached to a CX200. While this did not accomplish our goals of a fully functioning SAN, it got our feet wet and introduced us the capabilities we are looking for. Today, Benefis is in the process of upgrading to a CX600 that will eventually support 11 MEDITECH OSAL machines and a host of network servers. Plans also call for a second CX600 to be installed on another campus and mirrored for disaster recovery purposes. Our accolades also go out to the wonderful sales and installation teams at Dell. Rick Ells, Mark Provo and Anna North worked very hard to explain the benefits and capabilities of all their products and to make them fit into our tight budgets. Don Nguyen did an outstanding job of implementing and explaining the hardware. His experience and knowledge of the MEDITECH environment made all the difference in the world.
