5 Introduction Overview This Microsoft Exchange 2010 solution architecture manual contains possible configurations that can be used to architect your Exchange 2010 infrastructure. Samples in the manual are intended to serve as a reference or example for organizations whose requirements are similar. Each organization s requirements can differ significantly, though, and include items not accounted for in these configurations (e.g. message hygiene or third-party archiving). For a configuration sized to your specific requirements, please contact your Dell representative or use the Dell Exchange 2010 Advisor tool at Dell.com/Exchange. Finding Your Solution Sample configurations for Microsoft Exchange on Dell server and storage hardware are provided in three manuals available from the Dell.com/Exchange landing page to help you find an appropriate solution for your needs. The three documents, which correspond to the three Dell Exchange 2010 architecture models, each contain multiple configurations of varying sizes, requirements and hardware choices. Small and Branch Office Model Configurations ideal for small and branch offices with up to 1,000 mailboxes. Simple Distributed Model (this manual): Configurations that are streamlined, dedicated to Exchange, use internal server storage or direct-attached storage (DAS) and take the most advantage of the new high availability (HA) and replication features of Exchange Agile Consolidated Model: Configurations optimized for a shared, consolidated, and possible virtualized infrastructure. About the Simple Distributed Model These configurations have been designed for larger organizations (1000+ mailboxes) primarily interested in simplicity and ease of management. The model leverages the high-availability and disaster recovery features native to Exchange Server 2010 to help deliver robust, highly available Exchange environments in a simple, cost-effective manner. In particular, the simple distributed model utilizes Exchange 2010 Multi-role (Mailbox,HUB,CAS) server and storage bricks that can be combined to cost-effectively deliver performance and high availability. A brick can be either a single storagedense rack server, such as the Dell PowerEdge 12th generation PowerEdge R720xd, or the R620 combined with direct attached storage (DAS), such as the Dell PowerVault MD1200/1220 enclosure. The External Storage Distributed model uses disk enclosures attached as DAS via a RAID controller to the Mailbox or Multi-role server. Compared to the Internal Storage Distributed Model, this model provides additional growth in terms of both capacity and IO per server by increasing the number of arrays connecting to each server. This model can make maximum use of server resources with multiple storage enclosures before scaling out the configuration for future expansion needs. This option typically fits the needs of large or growing organizations that require larger mailboxes and large IO requirements. 5
6 Hardware Sample solutions described in this manual use the following Dell equipment: PowerEdge R720xd PowerEdge R620 PowerVault MD1200 PowerVault MD1220 Click on the links to the product landing pages for additional information on each product. Virtualization Those configurations that employ hardware virtualization software assume a platform approved via Microsoft s Server Virtualization Validation Program. The sizing recommendations in this document are based on testing done on various versions of Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware vsphere (including VMware ESX or VMware ESXi ). 6
7 1500 mailboxes, up to 3GB each, on PowerEdge R720xd This reference architecture utilizes the Multi-role server and storage bricks with internal storage. It has been sized to provide mailbox sizes of up to 3GB each. The Mailbox IO profile is sized for up to 150 messages per mailbox per day with 20% IO headroom to accommodate up to 0.18 IOPs per mailbox. This solution delivers high availability using Exchange 2010 mailbox resiliency with a two copy Database Availability Group (DAG). Both the active and passive copies are local. This solution does not offer site resiliency.
