1 NEWS FROM LINWORTH September 2013 It has been a great beginning to a new school year. We re glad to have everyone back and welcome all new students. Welcome Back Jen Kubina! Jen enjoyed last year with her newborn son. We're lucky enough to get her back on a full-time basis in the English department. No School- September 2, Labor Day Late Start- September 9, classes start at 9:10 CAR WASH Don t forget the Linworth Car Washes on September 7, 14, 21, and 28 from 11:00 3:00. MATH NOTE: A TI-84 Plus Silver Edition Calculator is recommended but a TI-83 Plus or better graphing calculator is required for ALL math classes offered at Linworth (TI-83 Plus, TI- 83 Plus Silver Edition, TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Plus Silver Edition ONLY). If students cannot obtain one of these calculators, we have a small number available to lend out. Our philosophy on the use of calculators is in line with grounded research: graphing calculators can enhance students understanding of functions, but students must develop a sound idea of what graphs are and how to use them independently of the use of a graphing calculator (Reaching for Common Ground in K-12 Mathematics Education, June 2005). It is the idea of enhancing and expanding student learning that we require that students have a graphing calculator to use for the school year. PARENT BOARD will meet Wednesday, September 4, at 7:00. The Parent Board is a support group for the school, which aids in communication about Linworth, helps generate ideas, gives advice about the school and conducts fundraisers. The meetings take place the first Wednesday of each school month at 7:00 p.m. Please attend. This month Chris Hasebrook will speak about the Culture Climate survey and building security issues. Senior Retreat- Senior Retreat will be Sunday, September 8-Monday, September 9. The seniors need to get a ride with a parent to Camp Ohio on Sunday. The retreat will begin at 4 p.m. We encourage several students to carpool together, so that every parent isn t driving to Camp Ohio. We will transport them back by bus, and they will be back by the end of the school day on Monday. Students received information in their mailboxes. We will be discussing Walkabout and College, and we will follow up with a meeting for parents on Wednesday, September 18 at 7:00. Questions? Contact Liz. liz@linworth.org.

2 RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE Linworth s first blood drive of the year will be Tuesday, September 10, from 8:00 2:00 p.m. To schedule an appointment call GIVE LIFE or Ron at (Linworth). You must be 16 years of age and a minimum of 110 pounds. Please bring your donor card or picture I.D. with you. If you are 16, you will need to turn in a signed parent permission form. See Ron with questions. Remember, if we meet our quota a Linworth senior will receive a scholarship from the Red Cross. SENIOR PARENT NIGHT will be held Wednesday, September 18, from 7:00 8:15. Laura Zelch will discuss some of the frequently asked questions of the college application process. It s a great precursor for the Linworth College Fair. Liz and Amy, our Walkabout Coordinators, will be providing information about the Walkabout planning process Please plan to attend and have your questions answered at this time. COLLEGE FAIR at Linworth will be held on Thursday, September 26, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. There will be large and small colleges represented. Each school will briefly highlight its program then you will have one hour to meet with school representatives of your choice. We encourage all Linworth families to attend. PSAT is highly recommended for our Linworth Juniors to take on Wednesday, October 16, at their main campus school. The PSAT provides an opportunity to practice the SAT test-taking experience and is also used as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying exam. Linworth student registration begins Monday, October 1, at Linworth. Watch for the October newsletter for information about the cost of the PSAT. PLAN is highly recommended for our Linworth Sophomores to take at their main campus school. Worthington Kilbourne is administering this ACT practice test on Wednesday, October 16, and Thomas is administering it on Wednesday, November 6. This assessment also provides the test-takers valuable feedback regarding career interests. Linworth student registration begins Monday, October 1, at Linworth. Watch for the October newsletter for information about the cost of the PLAN. ALL SCHOOL RETREAT will be on October 17 and 18 at Camp Christian in Magnetic Springs. For over 20, years Linworth has used these days for an all school retreat which is designed to bring the community closer together. We will bus the students to and from the campground, spend the night in cabins, and engage in several large and small group activities. We are in need of parents who wish to volunteer as chaperones. Please contact the school, or Josh at jstegman@worthington.k12.oh.us or josh@linworth.org if you are interested in helping. HALLOWEEN AND GRADE PERIOD IS ENDING DANCE (HAGPIE) will be Saturday, October 26. If you are interested in being a chaperone, please leave a message for Chris Hasebrook. If you would like to contribute baked goods, snacks, or 2 liter bottles of soda, please have your student bring them to school on Friday, October 25, or between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 26.
