1 EXOTIC ANDAMAN (STANDARD) The name Andaman presumably comes from Handuman, which is Malay for the Hindu god Hanuman. The name Nicobar is Malay for land of the naked (people). The Andaman Islands are a group of islands in the Bay of Bengal, and are part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Union Territory of India. Port Blair is the chief community on the islands, and the administrative centre of the Union Territory. The Andaman Islands form a single administrative district within the Union Territory, the Andaman district (the Nicobar district was separated and established as a new district in 1974). There was a prison here in the 10th century. The Indians imprisoned here referred to the Island and its prison as "Kala Pani. Andaman and Nicobar Islands is now a relaxed tropical island outpost that belongs to India but is geographically closer to Southeast Asia. Superb, near-deserted beaches, incredible corals and marine life, an intriguing colonial past and the remnants of a Stone Age culture lure travelers to these mysterious islands, 1000km off the east coast of India in the Bay of Bengal. ITINERARY: Day 1: Bangalore Port Blair (by flight) - Havelock Island (by cruise) Board the morning flight to Port Blair. Enjoy the breakfast on board. Upon arrival at the Port Blair Airport, transfer to Phoenix Bay jetty to board the cruise to Havelock Island. On arrival at Havelock Island, transfer to the hotel. Lunch served at the hotel. 3 Day 2: Havelock Island After breakfast at the hotel, proceed to visit Elephant Beach followed by a session of snorkeling. Those not interested in snorkeling may enjoy the underwater beauty through a glass bottom boat. Return to hotel for lunch. Afternoon, proceed to one of the best beaches in Asia - Radhanagar Beach. Return to your respective hotel in the evening. Stay overnight at the hotel in Havelock Island. Day 3: Havelock Island Port Blair After breakfast at the hotel, check out at 1100 hrs & transfer to the jetty. Board the cruise to Port Blair. Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel & check in. Lunch served at the hotel. Enjoy the evening at leisure. Comfortably stay overnight at the hotel in Port Blair. Day 4: Port Blair After breakfast, enjoy local sightseeing covering visits to Anthropological Museum, Cellular Jail National Memorial, Forest Museum, Chatham Saw Mill, Samudrika Naval Marine Museum and Aquarium. Return to hotel for lunch. Visit Corbyn s Cove Beach in the evening. Day 5: Port Blair After enjoying breakfast at the hotel enjoy some free time for leisure. Lunch served at the hotel. In the afternoon, proceed for a Harbour Cruise. Later witness the light & sound show at Cellular Jail, the saga of countless martyrs of Indian independence struggle who laid down their lives. 4 Day 6: Port Blair After breakfast, start off on an excursion to Coral Island at North Bay. You may enjoy a snorkeling here on direct payment basis. Later proceed for an excursion to the Ross Island the former residential & administrative island of the British during their rule of South East Asia. It was nicknamed the Paris of East. This island was completely destroyed in the earthquake, now in ruins. Lunch served at the hotel. Enjoy the evening at leisure and comfortably stay overnight at the hotel in Port Blair. Day 7: Port Blair Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. Lunch served at the hotel. Enjoy the day at leisure/ independent activities on direct-payment basis. One may opt for an excursion to Jolly Buoy Island /Red Skin Island/ Baratang Island. Return and stay overnight at the hotel in Port Blair. The easiest accessible island from the capital is the Havelock. Small boats leave the Phoenix Bay Harbor daily to Havelock; one can be escorted by a school of dolphins or spot giant sea tortoise and flying fish. It is situated just 54 kms from port Blair. Havelock Island has crystal clear blue water and white sandy beaches. Snorkeling: Snorkeling is the practice of swimming on or through a body of water while equipped with a diving mask, a shaped tube called a snorkel, and usually swim fins. In cooler waters, a wetsuit may also be worn. Use of this equipment allows the snorkeler to observe underwater attractions for extended periods of time with relatively little effort. Snorkeling is a popular recreational activity, particularly at tropical resort and scuba diving locations. The primary appeal is the opportunity to observe underwater life in a natural setting without the complicated equipment and training required for scuba diving, and without the exhaled bubbles of scuba-diving equipment. Radha Nagar Beach: As per the Times magazine, issue dated 22ndnov, 2004, beach no.5 of Havelock Island Radhanagar beach is one of the best beaches in Asia. They are largely untouched by humans. Havelock has been chosen to turn it into a luxurious tourist destination. PORT BLAIR: a. Anthropological Museum (With excellent displays of tools, clothing and photographs of the indigenous islanders, the Anthropological Museum helps unlock the mysteries of local tribal cultures. Cellular Jail National Memorial- (Built by the British over a period of 18 years from 1890, and preserved as a shrine to India's freedom fighters, the Cellular Jail National Memorial is well worth a visit to understand the islands' colonial past and its significance in the memory of the Indian people. Originally seven wings containing 698 cells radiated from a central tower, but only three remain. These remnants, however, give a fair impression of the 'hell on earth' that the prisoners here endured.) c. Forest Museum & Chatham Saw Mill - On Chatham Island (reached by a road bridge), the Forest Museum & Chatham Saw Mill was set up by the British in 1836 and was one of the largest wood processors in Asia. Inside is the forest museum, which displays locally grown woods, including the padauk, and has displays on the history of timber milling on the island.) d. Samundrika(Naval Marine Museum)- Run by the Indian navy, the Samudrika Marine Museum is a good place to get a handle on the islands' eco-system. Across several galleries you'll find informative displays on the islands' tribal communities, plants, animals and shells (check out the giant clam shell), as well as rooms dedicated to corals and marine archaeology. e. Aquarium (Fisheries Museum)- The Aquarium displays some of the 350 species found in the Andaman Sea - many pickled in formaldehyde - as well as more interesting live specimens in small tanks, including puffer fish, batfish and tiger fish. f. Ross Island - One of the most exotic of all the strings of islands in the Andaman & Nicobar group is the famous Ross Island, which stands guard at the mouth of Port Blair harbor. Ross island was the symbol of power during the erstwhile British Raj, named after the British surveyor Reginald Ross, this desolate island was transformed into a thriving township when the british established a penal colony on the Andaman & Nicobar Islands in the year In all about 500 personnel including officers, troops, Indian merchants and families lived at Ross Island. Ross island is a tourist attraction which depicts the efficient administration of ancient british government.this island presently houses the ruins of old buildings like hospital, bakery, govt. officers house, etc, all in dilapidated condition, reminding of the old British regime. 9 Take care of the coral reef, not just for yourself, but also for all who follow. Foreign nationals are requested to obtain the required permit before entering /soon after landing on the islands. Your concern for nature conservation is highly appreciated. Please inform local authorities/staff positioned in protected areas if you notice any undesirable activity. Dont s Foreign nationals may not enter the islands without permit. Do not enter the National Parks without permission. Do not enter into restricted/tribal areas. Do not collect, destroy or remove any living or dead animal/plant. Do not collect dead coral or touch/break live coral. Please do not stand on the coral reef while snorkeling/scuba diving. Do not take video or film without permit, wherever such permits are required. Do not take video, film or photographs inside Tribal Reserve areas or of the indigenous tribes. Do not carry sea fans and seashells unless specific permits are obtained from the Fisheries Department. Do not throw garbage and plastics in public places, beaches and into the sea. Do not swim after consuming liquor. Do not swim in unsafe waters. Do not Light fire in Protected Areas as it not only destroys forests but also damages wildlife habitat.
