4 ATTENDANCE Pupils are required to attend school whenever it is open unless they are unwell. Please contact the school office to inform us of the reason for your child s absence by 8.45am. Please contact the school office if your child is going to be late for some unavoidable reason by 8.45am. Where possible we appreciate appointments for children being made outside school hours. Please contact the school office if your child is leaving the school premises for any reason during the school day. ATTENDANCE DUES All Catholic schools charge attendance dues which are a legally binding charge to all parents and caregivers who have enrolled their children at a Catholic school. The account is sent out early at the beginning of each term, from the parish and should be paid to the parish. Attendance dues are authorized under the Private Schools Conditional Integration Act and are used to pay for costs associated with the land and buildings for the Catholic primary schools in the diocese. Where a parent has four or more children at a Catholic primary school, the invoice will be for three children only and any further children per family will not be charged attendance dues. Invoice is payable, unless in special circumstances the charge has been waived by the proprietor of the school for specific issues associated with a family. If you are experiencing financial difficulties, you should make this known to the parish priest. This matter will be dealt with in confidence. Our Lady of Victories 3

5 BEHAVIOUR PLAN At OLV we expect a high standard of behaviour. This is supported with a restorative justice model of behaviour management. Our school rule is, Respect God, Others and the Environment. If you have concerns about your child s learning or behaviour, please contact their Class Teacher. BICYCLES SCOOTERS & Please ensure your child is a proficient cyclist and understands the road code before allowing them to ride their cycles to school. It is suggested that children be 10 years or older before riding their bikes to school. Cycles/Scooters should be locked in the stands provided. BUS A Catholic Schools bus collects students from the Burnham and Rolleston area and transports them to and from Our Lady of Victories School, Villa Maria College and St Thomas of Canterbury College. The bus stops just outside the school grounds on Craven Street. A list of children riding the bus home is collated each day. CARPARK SAFETY PROCEDURES Adults bringing children to school by car are expected to walk them from the car onto the school property and collect them after school from inside the gate. The main school entrance is monitored at the end of each school day until 3.15 pm after which children who have not been collected are taken to the school office. Vehicles enter from Craven Street. Vehicles reverse into parking area at the rear of the church. Refer to diagram below. Children to walk across raised area. 7 CATHOLIC CHARACTER Our primary aim is to provide a caring Catholic learning environment which invites children to have a personal faith in Christ. We work closely with our local parish, Our Lady of Victories and the Catholic Education Office. If your contact details change, please inform the school office. ENROLMENTS Enrolments are accepted from Year 1 to Year 8. Our school has a maximum roll of 272 and can cater for a maximum of 5% Non-Preferential children as stipulated in the Conditional Integration Act 1975 and School Charter. New entrant children about to start school are invited to their classroom for transition visits. Parents are welcome to accompany their child on these visits. FAMILY CONTRIBUTION All school trips, cultural visits, sports, transport (buses), special character resource development and technology costs (Yr 7-8) are covered by the Family Contribution. Families are requested to pay these, or to make arrangements to pay these, by mid-march each year. The family contribution is tax deductible. Our Lady of Victories 6

8 For 2014 the all inclusive donation is: Yr 7-8 students $260 (includes technology) Yr 5-6 students $210 Yr 0-4 students $160 Please contact us if you have difficulties with this. HEALTH Please inform us of any health concerns of your child, so we can manage and monitor these in the school setting. Minor injuries will be treated by office staff or teachers on duty. Illness will be monitored by office staff and parents informed by phone. More serious injuries, including head injuries, will be treated by a designated first aider and parents will be informed by phone. If an injury or illness appears serious/life threatening, an ambulance will be called. If medication is to be dispensed during the school day, a school medication form is to be completed. School will not administer the first dose of any medication. All medications will be stored securely. School Dental clinicians can be contacted on between 8.00am pm HOME SCHOOL COMMUNICATION Great home-school relationships ensure achievement. A Meet the Teacher evening is held in February/March. Portfolios of learning are compiled for all children and shared with parents at formal interviews. For children in Years 4-8, formal interviews are arranged for mid-year and upon request after receiving the final portfolio in December. For children in Years 1-3, interviews occur on their birthday anniversary and six months after this, as interim reporting. OLV school newsletters are ed home every Thursday. Hard copies of the newsletter are available at reception. Newsletters are also posted on the school website. Our Lady of Victories 7

9 HOMEWORK Each class teacher sets homework. Please check in with your child s teacher to ensure expectations are met. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Our Lady of Victories is a partner to the Code of Practice. An International Student Co-ordinator provides for the pastoral care of international students. Additional support in English language learning is available for our international students. LUNCHES Children are supervised while eating lunch. Children need to bring a full water bottle to school. We operate a pack it in, pack it out procedure, with any food wrappings to be taken home for disposal. The PFA organise a Friday Sausage Sizzle. Sausages are $1.50 each and small drinks are $1.00. PARENT HELP We welcome parent helpers. Please see your child s teacher if you are available to help. PFA The Parents and Friends Association (PFA) plays a vital role within our school community. Meetings are advised in the School Newsletter and you are most welcome to attend. Our Lady of Victories 8

10 PROPERTY Please ensure all clothing and other personal property is clearly named. Any valuable personal property, including money, should be handed to the class teacher for safekeeping. We do not take responsibility for the loss of personal items, including money that has not been handed in. Lost property is held at the school office for inspection. ROAD CROSSING Children are supervised across Main South Road and Watts Road at the end of each school day for those who need to catch a City Council bus on Main South Road, or those students walking to Riccarton Library. A list of children crossing the road is collated each day. SCHOOL HOURS School starts every morning at 9.00 am. Children can enter their classroom after 8.30am. Mid-morning break is from am until 11 am. Lunch break is from pm 1:20 pm. Afternoon classes finish at 3.00 pm. Children who are still at school after 3.15 pm will be brought inside the school office to wait for their parents. Parents will be given prior notice of any change to school hours requiring the school to close early eg Interviews. SCHOOL LIBRARY Each class visits the school library at least once a week. Children select books to borrow and are encouraged to read these at home. Our Lady of Victories 9

13 SPORTS UNIFORM Regulation OLV blue polo shirt (available for purchase at the School Office) Navy shorts. Regulation code footwear. Netball skirts / soccer / rugby jerseys hired from the school for Winter Sport. All pupils are required to wear the school sports polo shirt and school shorts at our weekly sports afternoons and when representing the school. The winter sports socks for rugby, soccer and hockey are available through the school office. Jewellery is not part of the school uniform and is not to be worn at school. Small studs only are permissible. Hair longer than collar length is to be tied back. Regulation navy headbands or hair ties are to be worn by girls. UNIFORM OUTLETS: The complete uniform can be purchased from: The Warehouse Susan Ross 69 Rutlands Street, St Albans ph: (boys and girls ) SPORT Children in Y4-8 children travel by bus to Hagley Park to participate in inter-school sport within the North West Zone. Outside providers teach swimming and gymnastics to all children. STATIONERY Stationery is purchased outside the school. Stationery lists will be given out by the teachers during the last week of school and will be available on the school website. Our Lady of Victories 12

14 All items are required to be named. SUN SMART School sunhats must be worn outside at all times during terms 1 & 4. TECHNOLOGY Year 7-8 students have technology at Kirkwood Intermediate School for one and half hours each week. Programmes link together in themes to focus on Planning for Practice, Brief Development and Outcome Evaluation through Foods, Electronics, Materials and Design & Graphics.
