The teachers came back to school officially on August 16th. We ended our week with a retreat to the Houston Gardens where we had a wonderful presenter sharing The Catholic Story, a special thanks to Jennifer Powell who is a member of St. Peter's Parish. Please return to your classroom teacher by Friday, September 3rd. After you have read the handbook please sign and return the form that indicates you ve read the handbook. This will be sent after you ve indicated how you want to receive the handbook. Our Dress Code will change in the year We are asking for parents to start joining us in these efforts. The cross-bow tie will not be mandatory for mass until next year ( ). I ve asked that we are aware of shoes, solid colors would be best (see dress code below). If we don t have a written policy in our dress code we don t enforce this. Many teachers have specific ideas that they do within their grade level, many of them have motivational activities, etc. They will inform you of this in their newsletters. We will have a committee consisting of parents and teacher as we update our dress code. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. The way our children look and carry themselves is important for the image of our school and also for their self esteem. If a student continually breaks the dress code then a letter will be sent home notifying the parents of the infraction. I appreciate you working with me and helping me teach the children that we must follow rules so that they become responsible citizens. Please fill out and return the Parent/Student Handbook form.

2 Page 2 of 6 School Newsletter Dress Code HOT LUNCH Hot lunch will begin on September 1 st. This has been the tradition at our school since our wonderful Sisters were here. We don t serve hot lunch without a prepaid lunch and lunch count. All students, grades K-8 must wear the school uniform during school hours. Since the uniform policy is established as a convenience for parents, the responsibility for seeing that the children are in uniform rests with the parents. The approved school uniform follows: Approved school dress options consist of: White or Light Blue Oxford with long or short sleeves. White or Light Blue Polo with long or short sleeves. White Jersey Turtleneck shirt Navy Cardigan Sweater Navy V-Neck Pullover Sweater Navy V-Neck Vest Sweater Navy St. Mary s Sweatshirt with school emblem Navy Uniform Slacks Navy Uniform Shorts* NO Hoodies Girls may also wear: White or Light Blue Peter Pan Blouse with long or short sleeves. Scooter Skirt White or Navy tights White or Navy anklets or knee highs Navy Jumper Navy Skirt Navy Culottes Navy Skort Boys may also wear: Navy Uniform Tie (Wearing a uniform tie is mandatory on Mass days.) Uniform shoes and socks: Ankle high styles tennis shoes are not permitted (such as converse) Shoes must be Brown, Black, White or Blue shoes, no colors or patterns All student socks must extend at least one inch above the top of their shoes. Grades 3-8: On Physical Education days, third through eighth graders are to wear navy or dark shorts and white t-shirt. P.E. shirts are available for purchase with the school emblem, but are not required. Jeans are not allowed. Occasionally, there will be a special dress day and may include jeans, but unless specified a jeans day, they must not be worn. Special dress days will be announced in the weekly newsletter. Boys in all grades need to wear belts (brown or black) with shirts tucked in. Ties must be worn to Mass. Baggy pants, long belts or other fads are not acceptable as part of the uniform or special dress days. Culottes (that do not look like shorts, front or back) may be worn to Mass. Skorts may not.

3 School Newsletter Page 3 of 6 Dress Code continuation Footwear: safe, durable black, blue or white shoes that are safe for playground activity and that will not scuff the floors worn with socks, no short or hidden socks. Socks should be solid colors, not patterned. Students wearing make-up of any kind, nail polish, false nails, dangling earrings or hair accessories deemed not appropriate by school personnel for the uniform will be asked to remove them. The only acceptable jewelry is watches (for boys & girls), and post earrings for girls. Boys hair: Hair must be neat and trimmed above the shirt collar. It must not be spiked, dyed or bleached, hanging in eyes or anything extreme. Girls hair: Hair must be neat and free of mousse, excessive hair spray and large clamps. Headbands must be navy blue or white. Dyed or bleached hair or alteration of color by any method is not acceptable. Mass St Mary Catholic School ID # % Back To Schools Program Our mass schedule will be as follows: Wednesday for grades K-3 Friday for grades 4-8 First Friday-All school mass (the preceding Wednesday we will not have a K-3 mass) I will be sitting in the back of the church with students who are not in dress code. Also, if students go to the restroom I am able to stand in the vestibule of the church for the safety of your children. Chain of Command If you have a concern please follow the proper chain of command: Begin with the source of the problem: (If it is a teacher) Teacher-Principal-Pastor-Archdiocese (school issue, not individual teacher) Principal-Pastor-Archdiocese ATTENTION As many of you know I was married this summer to a wonderful man. Some of you may remember Mr. Gary Wiley, my new husband and long-time friend. Although I've taken his name, I feel that it would be easier for the children to continue to call me Ms. Gigliotti.

There have been times that the Archdiocese of Denver Catholic Schools may need to change the Liturgical Conference or other situations that may arise (snow days, etc.) Half-days are marked as such (early dismissal). If it is not marked this is a full day of school, this has been the trend in the past. We will send out a monthly calendar of activities so that you can see if changes have been made. New Staff We want to welcome Mr. Mike Willis as our newest staff member for our middle school math. We feel very fortunate to have a veteran teacher working with our students. Mr. Willis has also been an active member joining our middle school students on our river trips. Please feel free to call him with any questions you may have about the middle school math program. Six Grade Update Also, this year our sixth grade middle school students will be in a self contained program. After researching the middle school concept it was decided that acclimating to the middle school experience would begin with moving to the middle school floor and working in a regular classroom setting. Mrs. Baldinell has looped with the fifth grade students to the sixth grade.
