Experience from Austria (A-SMGCS) ACAC Surveillance Workhop Mr. Alfred GULDER Mr. Erwin RISCHAN Mr. Christian SCHEIFLINGER 1 Agenda Operational Need Technical Challenges Technical Solution System Architecture MDS Performance 2 1
Why to go for A-SMGCS? Enhanced procedures for adverse weather conditions needed Demand Improved surveillance of full and up-to-date safety needed ground situation awareness Increased airport throughput and efficiency needed 3 Solution in Vienna Advanced Ground-Suveillance Increased Airport Throughput Airport MLAT based A-SMGCS Live-Data Predicted-Data Prozess Optimization Safety Resources Optimization Airport Stackholders 4 2

Available Sensors for Vienna A-SMGCS Solution (AviBit) 3 Surface Movement Radar Systems (Terma, Sensis) Direction Finder (R&S) 2 SSR Radars (THALES, Cassidean) Flight Plan Data Base (THALES) Runway Lighting System (SIEMENS) Multilateration Sensors including ADS-B (SENSIS) 7 Multilateration theory Q A Concept based on Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) processing. A TDOA-based system measures the difference in time between reception of a signal at multiple known positions and uses this information to calculate the location of the signal source. Time of Arrival in C: TOA 3 In the two-dimensional problem of surface surveillance, the TDOA at each pair of sensors has a single distinct curve upon which the transponder is located. Data from three sensors permits the system to create three solution arcs the intersection of which is the location of the transponder. 8 4

Background Window shows Ground Movement Situation Approach Situation Window shows the air situation in the area around the airport. Flightplan Information Window show the inbound and outbound flights for the next hours. HMI - MAIN WINDOW 17 ALERTING FUNCTIONS The use of MLAT enables: RUNWAY INCURSION STOPBAR CROSSING AREA INFRINGEMENT AIRCRAFT SEPARATION TAXIWAY COLLISION 18 9
ASTOS RUNWAY INCURSION ALERTING: ASTOS checks the runway if an aircraft is about to land or to takeoff. if any object is detected on the runway ASTOS generates an alert by highlighting the affected runway as well as the offending target. 19 STOP-BAR CROSSING ALERT: ASTOS is connected to the airport lighting system for knowing the present status of stop-bars and trigger an alert by highlighting the affected stop-bar
AREA INFRINGEMENT ALERT: ASTOS alerting the controller in case of an unauthorized vehicle or aircraft entering one of these areas by highlighting the area as well as the offending target. 21 AIRCRAFT SEPARATION MONITOR: Moving aircraft are continuously checked for their distance to each other related to ASTOS their speed. An alert is generated when aircraft are moving too close to each other
TAXIWAY COLLISION MONITORING: During taxiing, aircraft s speed and position are continuously monitored. If two aircraft are predicted to collide ASTOS generates an alert. 23 Need for A-SMGCS? 24 12
