DEPARTMENT: PHOTOGRAPHY Product Recommendation FIRST YEAR Digital DSLR camera body 1x Good multi- purpose zoom lens 1x Reflector board 1x Grey Card 1x Strong sturdy tripod 1x Cable Release 1x Extra Camera battery 1x Memory card Recommended Camera Bodies NIKON, Canon and Fuji are the only three digital camera brands we recommend. Although there are other great brands on the market we have found that in terms of product range and support these three brands have a very strong presence in South Africa. The following camera bodies are especially popular: NIKON D7100 NIKON D7200 NIKON D750 NIKON D810 NIKON has a NSS student support program in place whereas a student from the Open Window can claim back 10% of any NIKON purchase made between the period of 1 October 2015 and 30 September 2016.
The claim procedure for the NSS program is as follows: Claims must be submitted to the NIKON accounts department within 31 days of invoicing. The following must be included for the claim to be processed: 1. A copy of the student card or registration letter 2. Copy of invoice reflecting 10% discount 3. Completed leaflet with student details (supplied by the shop owner) This promotion is applicable only to Nikon products purchased within the borders of South Africa through an authorised Nikon reseller. 4 In order to support photography students Fujifilm is offering a range of specials depending on the camera purchased: These cash back specials are currently promoted, but they will be having new specials in January Consult their website for more information.

SECOND YEAR First year equipment 1x Good portrait lens (i.e the NIKON 105mm Macro f2.8 lens or the Fuji XF 90mm F2R LM WR lens). 1x Speedlight flash (generic brands like the Yungnuo flashes are more than adequate) 1x wireless flash trigger 1x Studio Light with Battery pack 1x Light stand 1x Any light shaper (Umbrella, beauty dish, soft box) 1x Light meter (Polaris or Sekonic) 8x AA batteries (Recyko or similar) with a charger Second year equipment is an extension of gear already purchased in first year. If a student does not have a proper DSLR camera it is recommended to purchase one in second year, as students are already encouraged to do real industry related assignments from the second semester in second year. It is also recommended to make sure that the student has one professional lens. Please consult the list of recommended camera dealers - they will be able to assist the student in their purchase. Keep in mind that in commercial photography professionals always make sure they have one good portrait lens, as people are more often a photographer s subject matter, irrespective of the genre of photography you end up pursuing. Studio and strobist photography make out a big part of photography. Students need to purchase at least one speedlight. NIKON and Canon flashes are very expensive so we always recommend that students settle for generic brands like Yongnuo flashes. Our students have been using them frequently in the past and we are confident in endorsing them. PROFOTO is the top professional studio lighting equipment brand on the market. If the student has the budget to purchase a PROFOTO lighting kit it is highly recommended, but Camera Stuff in Johannesburg offer a wide range of generic lighting equipment at a third of the price. Although we are hesitant to recommend these studio lights the CONONMARK B4 with battery pack and Elinchrome have proven that they do have a place in the market. YONGNUO FLASH AND TRIGGER
PROFOTO B1 WITH RADIO TRIGGER CONONMARK B4 SEKONIC LIGHT METER
THIRD YEAR Second year equipment 1x Studio Light with Battery pack 1x Light stand 1x Any light shapers Most gear has already been purchased in first and second year. A student now only needs to acquire one extra studio light to make them ready for the industry. Third year is about introducing students to the market and kick starting their business, for that students need to have the right equipment. SERVICE PROVIDERS Buying equipment is more than just finding the best bargain or buying the cheapest camera available. It is also about building relationships. The following list of service providers are people that we have found are not only committed to giving our student s good deals and outstanding service, but also committed in supporting students in establishing their careers. Name Number Service Fuji cameras Printing (012) Manfrotto tripods Karlien (@photo) karlien.m@atphoto.co.za Rechargeable batteries Memory cards Elinchrome Leanne or Ross Camerastuff Alexis and Riana Fotiades Glowhire (Leanne) (011) leanne@camerastuff.co.za 373 Jan Smuts Ave, Johannesburg (011) (Riana) riana@glowhire.co.za Yongnuo flash equipment Grey cards, Reflector boards Cable releases Cononmark B4 Lightstands Lightshapers Rechargeable batteries Profoto lighting Profoto light shapers Elinchrome Canon cameras NIKON cameras Light stands Camera Bags Light meters Camera and equipment rentals Outdoor Photo (012) Second hand equipment Except for Outdoor photo all above service providers deliver at The Open Window. FAQ Q: I am a first year student and already have a camera. Can I just use the one I have?
A: The list that we have compiled was done in such a way to assist students who would like to pursue photography as a career in the future. Entry- level cameras are fine for first year, but when you enter second year you will be competing with professionals and unfortunately better equipment give better results. First year is your most expensive year, as you have to lay the foundation of future purchases. Q: I don t want to invest in an expensive camera only to find that I am not interested in pursuing photography as a major in second year. A: If you buy one of the cameras on the list we can assure you that we will be able to sell it at second hand value (60% of the purchase value) to a first year the following year. Provided that the camera is in a good condition. Q: What else should I budget for? A: We are committed to giving students a pleasant learning experience therefore we always organise fieldtrips and workshops outside their usual class times and practical s. An additional fee of R600 per year should cover these field trips. From second year students will be working on professional portfolio s and sourcing models, make artists and procuring props for shoots and it can be a costly exercise. An additional R2000 per term should cover these expenses. In third year students can budget an additional R500 for workshops and R5000 for printing their final portfolios and an additional R2000 for their exhibitions. Q: When do I need to purchase the equipment? A: You can use the following table to plan your purchase FIRST YEAR Second Year TERM 1 TERM 2 TERM 3 Camera (22 February) Reflector board (4 April) Printing (exhibition) R350 Tripod (22 February) Cable release (4 April) Greycard (7 March) Studio light (22 February) Printing (exhibition) R350 Flash with flash trigger Lightmeter (22 February) (11 July) Third Year Studio light (22 February) Exhibition 1 (R1000) Alternative printing workshop (Price to be confirmed) One year program Camera (22 February) Tripod (22 February) Greycard (7 March) Studio light (4 April) Reflector board (4 April) Cable release (4 April) Flash and trigger (4 April) PLEASE NOTE: Prices are an estimate and by no means exact figures.
