COMPUTER It is highly desirable that foundation students have access to a computer at home. Senior students must have workstations at home. Ensure that you buy the latest model from an authorised reseller. The Orange Digital Store (sales@odsonline.co.za) on campus offers good deals on Apple Macs and free advice. PC or MAC? The choice between PC or MAC is your own. Animation: 3D Animation software works best with Windows 64 bit architecture and dedicated graphics acceleration (not onboard graphics like Intel, but rather graphics card brands like NVidia or AMD). Apple machines can also be used, but some software applications are Windows-based and will require disk partitioning. Design studies: Design software runs more stable on MAC and screens are better for colour calibration. Estimated cost: R REQUIRED CAMERA BODY AND LENSES: The minimum requirement is that the student must have a 35mm digital single-lens reflex camera (D-SLR) and a F/1.8 or F/1.4 50mm autofocus (AF) prime fixed focal length lens (alternatively, opt for the 3

4 standard kit lens of 18 55mm in focal length the kit lens is the lens that is normally included as a bundle with the camera body). Please note that a digital compact (also known as a point-and-shoot ) or compact D-SLR camera is insufficient for the Photography course. Nikon 35mm D-SLR is strongly recommended, as Nikon provides excellent service, technical support as well as the Nikon NSS (Nikon Student Support) programme to our students, which entails annual special offers, discounts or bundles to all registered photography students. For students who consider enrolling for Photography as well as Film Arts electives (such as Film & TV or Motion Design), please ensure that your choice of camera body has high-definition video recording capability. 6 Every student needs to buy / have access to a DSLR camera with video capabilities. They are the most affordable option compared to other video-only camera solutions. The two top brands are NIKON and CANON. We recommend Canon DSLR cameras because: Most camera modification software available on the market is for Canon DSLR cameras Canon has more DSLR video users which means there is a bigger support structure in South Africa Canon fits into the existing workflow and support structure at Open Window A basic kit for shooting video includes: 1 x camera body, battery and charger Entry to mid-level cameras: Canon EOS 60D DSLR, or EOS 70D DSLR (from R6 000 R13 000).
