2 Open Funds: Comic Relief Comic Relief s vision is for a just world free from poverty, where everyone is safe, healthy, educated and empowered. Comic Relief launched its new grants strategy in May, outlining their aim to fund new initiatives, to help drive great ideas and sustainable change in the UK and some of the world s poorest communities. They have identified 4 key programme areas: Investing in children and young people to be ready for the future o Want to help children and young people move successfully through crucial key life transitions into school, to adolescence and into a fulfilled and positive adulthood o Promoting good quality, safe and on-going education o Protect young people from violence, conflict and abuse o Build young people s enterprise and leadership skills Empowering women and girls to be free to lead the lives they choose o Tackling violence projects that reduce levels of violence against women; inform and challenge young people about healthy relationships, abuse and consent; ensure women who experience abuse and violence can access help o Helping women work and ensuring equality o Developing leadership skills Improving the health and well-being of vulnerable and disadvantaged people o Focusing work in the UK and sub-saharan Africa o Prioritising work that addresses physical and mental health and well-being amongst families, individuals, communities and helping them to work with service providers to find solutions Building stronger communities in areas of disadvantage, deprivation and poverty o Working with disadvantaged communities to identify their strengths and overcome barriers to productivity, connection or community well-being. People will be at the heart of Comic Relief s new grant making approach, working in partnerships with funded organisations to co-create initiatives helping people to find their own solutions to the challenges they face. The application process will be streamlined to make it as easy as possible to apply for funding. A rolling programme of opportunities will be outlined on the Comic Relief website. (cont) 2
3 Comic Relief Local Communities Programme: will prioritise projects which improve people s life skills, education, employability and enterprise; maximise people s ability to strengthen community cohesion and build social capacity; provide people with opportunities to access local services, achieve greater social justice and reduce inequality, exclusion and disadvantage and to advance people s physical and mental health and well-being and safety. Funding Available: grants of between 1,000 and 10,000 where the grant represents at least 30% of the total project cost grants for a maximum of 12 months. Total of 4.5M available. Deadline: Website: this grants is delivered through the UK Community Foundations programme in Scotland this is delivered by Foundation Scotland. Core Strength Programme: people living in deprived areas, or who face a range of social issues, often get vital support from smaller organisations based within their communities. It s these locally-based groups that truly understand the needs of the people they serve and make a huge difference to their lives. Comic Relief is making 4M available to approximately 100 organisations who will receive grants to support their core funding (main running costs, staff, office costs etc). 1M will go towards support for organisations working primarily with women and girls. Funding Available: Comic Relief will welcome applications for grants of up to 20,000 p.a. over 2 years Eligible applicants: organisations in the UK that: Deliver services in one of the programme s priority areas Has been in existence for at least 5 years Work in areas of significant disadvantage, deprivation or poverry Have an annual income of between 100,000 and 500,000 Do not have more than one year s unrestricted reserves Deadline: midday on the 27th of July with final decisions being made in December Website: 3
4 Foundation Scotland Funding Foundation Scotland is an independent charity established to strengthen local communities by providing a source of funding to community led projects the length and breadth of Scotland. Since 1996, the Foundation has been delivering innovative funding programmes, distributing over 45.4 million to charities and community groups. Foundation Scotland s vision is to create a vibrant Scotland where philanthropists and independent funders invest money, expertise and influence to make a difference to causes and communities that inspire them. Foundation Scotland has a number of Funding Programmes that can help organisations working with local communities. This includes: Al Maktoum College Community Fund: The Al Maktoum College Community Fund, administered by Foundation Scotland, is available to support communities in and around Dundee. Since 2009, the fund has distributed over 100,000 to communities and organisations. The funding is available to help groups across various sectors, including resident associations, schools, sports clubs youth groups, senior citizens organisations and more. The fund can help support projects working within the following areas: Learning and Education Multiculturalism, interfaith and cultural engagement Youth development Opportunities for those with physical/learning disabilities Helping people overcome challenges/adversity Funding available: Between 250 and 2,000; Maximum grant considered 8,000 Who is eligible: Charities, community groups, resident associations, schools, sports clubs youth groups, senior citizens organisations Deadline: 29 July 2016 Website: Women s Fund for Scotland: The Women s Fund for Scotland is administered by Foundation Scotland and provides support for programmes and projects that promote women s development, self-sufficiency, and social and economic equality. The priority themes considered for project and programme funding are: 1. building skills and confidence 2. improving health and well-being 3. building social networks 4. moving on from violence Funding available: Small Grants: 500-2,000; Large Grants: Up to 30,000 over 3 years. 5 Heineken Fund: The Heineken Fund, administered by Foundation Scotland, aims to fund projects that encourage community health and well being and builds community pride. The funding is intended to help those above the age of 18 and projects which primarily benefit children and young people will not be considered for funding. The priorities for funding will be to support charities and community projects working in the following fields: arts, music and culture environment social inclusion social, economic regeneration local community education Priority will be given to community based projects. Funding available: 250 2,000 Who is eligible: Charity/community organisations Deadline: Rolling programme Website: Gateway Exchange Fund: The Gateway Exchange Fund, administered by Foundation Scotland, provides funding to projects which empower people to move on with their lives and fulfil their potential. Priority groups include those with criminal record backgrounds, mental health problems and drug abuse issues, funding grants will especially focus on those emphasising self-help projects. The Trust will also consider projects relating to counselling, HIV, recovery from drug addiction, projects which help prisoners or ex-prisoners, mental health projects, innovative arts and crafts projects, projects supporting refugees and asylum seekers projects supporting women and projects supporting men recovering from sexual abuse. Applications can be made through Foundation Scotland s Express Grants programme. 6 Dundee Voluntary Action Small Grants Fund Capacity Building Programme Dundee Voluntary Action s small grants funds are available to organisations in Dundee to enable them to build the capacity of communities to deliver services which ensure older people are able to look after and improve their own health and wellbeing and live in good health for longer. Funding was allocated to Community Planning Partnerships to focus on prevention, early intervention and care and support for people with complex and multiple conditions. Funding is available for new and innovative projects that support adult care services and can cover costs such as salary costs for new staff posts, sessional staff, expenses for volunteers, venue costs (level 1 only) and delivery specific costs such as events, marketing and leaflets. Funding available: Level 1 grants of up to 800 (which can be submitted at any time) and Level 2 grants of between 800 and Level 2 grants can be completed with the support of a Capacity Building Worker. Funding should be spent within 12 months of award. Who is eligible: Community Group/Voluntary sector/social enterprise organisation with an annual turnover > 250,000 Deadline: Ongoing programme Website: ASDA Community Capital Scheme The ASDA Community Capital Scheme, administered by Social Investment Scotland, provides flexible loans of between 10,000 and 50,000. The purposes of the grant loans are to support early stage Social Enterprises with growing their business. Funding will be available for working capital used for growth of the organisation, asset purchases or improvements and innovation. The funding scheme gives priority to organisation which: Have been in operation for less than 2 years Are taking on social investment for the first time Are adopting new approaches to deliver significant social impact The loans will be repayable over a maximum of 6 years, with a fixed interest rate of 5% chargeable from Year 2 (with no interest charged or accrued in year 1). 7 Woodward Charitable Trust: Main Grants Programme: The Woodward Charitable Trust grants programme awards funding toward small-scale and locally-based charitable initiatives across the United Kingdom. The grants programme is administered through the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trust and favours charities which make good use of volunteers and encourage past and current users to participate. Initiatives that are considered under the grant programme are those that benefit the following groups: Children and young people Minority groups/refuges Gypsies and travellers Prisoners/Ex-offenders, People with disabilities Homelessness Arts Outreach Environmental projects The Trust funds a range of general projects but also has a focus on Summer Playschemes for children aged 5 to 16. This scheme provides grants of between 500 and 1000 to support an average of 35 projects per annum. The Playscheme must run for a minimum of 2 weeks/10 days across the summer holidays. This scheme is closed for 2016 (deadline generally in April) but will reopen for Funding available: Small grants 100 to 5000; Large grants 5000 plus Who is eligible: Charities/community organisations prefers small to medium sized charities with an income of less than 300,000 Deadline: 31 July 2016 for the October 2016 Trustees Meeting Website: Faiths in Community Scotland Action Fund The Faiths in Scotland Community Action Fund provides grants to local faith groups in order to support Scotland s most fragile urban and rural communities. The 2016 funding round, in partnership with STV Appeal, is looking for applications from faith groups whose associated projects are aimed at tackling poverty amongst children, young people and families. Eligible projects must identify particular needs for children/young people and their families, encourage participation and build community relationships. Who is eligible: Locally-based faith groups Funding available: Small grants of between 500 and 2000 to be use din 12 months and Major grants of up to 15,000 over a maximum of 3 years with priority to start-up projects. Deadline: 30 September for decisions by the end of November Website: 7
8 Lintel Trust Grants Programme The Lintel Trust works with voluntary and community based organisations throughout Scotland to assist people with housing need to enable individuals to live independently. Group that are supported for grants are those that work with single homeless people, people with physical disabilities, people with mental health problems, older people and people from ethnic minority backgrounds. Projects eligible for grants must: Provide/support independent living in a secure home Improve housing, standards of living and local communities Funding is available for projects based in Scotland and working at a local or national level, and for new developments which organisations are not currently undertaking. Funding available: Up to 2000 with match funding a criteria of the grant Who is eligible: Voluntary sector organisations/housing associations & co-operatives Deadline: 19 August 2016 Website: Age Scotland Community Grants Programme The Age Scotland Community Grants Programme Tackling Loneliness and Isolation is now open for applications. The grant can fund a variety of activities that enable member groups and organisations to tackle loneliness and isolation amongst older people and improve later life in communities across Scotland. This can include start up costs for new groups and existing groups working to develop new services, Sessional staff, costs and speakers or trainers fees, Training, group activities, research and equipment. Age Scotland also have a small grants programme to assist Men s Sheds to get started and to develop their activities. Funding available: 250-2,000 Who is eligible: The Age Scotland Community Grants Programme is only open to Category 1 Age Scotland member groups and organisations. Additionally, applicants must: 1. Be a constituted voluntary organisation or community group; 2. Have a bank account with at least 2 signatories; 3. Have a committee/management structure and appropriate insurance cover for your ongoing activities. Deadline: 30 August 2016 Website: 8
9 The Strathmartine Trust Grant Funding The Strathmartine Trust offers grants with the primary object of supporting research and education in Scottish History. The Trustees seek applications for grants of up to 5,000 to assist with the completion of existing projects and to aid publication. Researchers can apply using the application form available on the Trust s website along with a brief CV and 3 letters of support. Funding available: Up to 5,000 Deadline: 15 November 2016 Website: Dr Guthrie s Association Fund The Dr Guthrie s Association provides grant funding to support organisations devoted to the care and welfare of children and young people. The funding is available for small local organisations working in Scotland, principally to support economically and socially disadvantaged children and young people aged years. Organisation support young unemployed people are also given priority. The grant also prioritises creative and outdoor activities that support disadvantaged children and young people. Funding available: About 70,000 disbursed each year in grants of up to 2,000 Who is eligible: Not-for-profit organisations, with particular preference to small charities preference for Edinburgh area but will give grants across Scotland Deadline: Ongoing programme with applications considered 3 times a year March, July and November Website: Foyle Foundation Small Grants Scheme The Foyle Foundation s Small Grants Scheme is available to support small UK based charities to assist grass roots and local community based projects. The funding is available for a broad range of activities and to support a diverse range of local community issues. One year grants of between 1,000 and 10,000 to charities which can demonstrate that such a grant will make a significant difference to their work. Funding available: 1,000-10,000 Who is eligible: Small charities/local community organisations; Charities must have an annual turnover of less than 100,000. Deadline: Ongoing programme may take 4 months for a decision Website: 9
10 Youth Music Initiative Creative Scotland The Youth Music Initiative, administered by Creative Scotland, aims to create high quality music making opportunities for young people, offer young people the change to achieve their potential in or through music making, and to support the development of the youth music sector for the benefit of young people. The funding is primarily designed to support access to music-making out-with school time through the informal sector, however, there are 3 routes for support: 1. School-based music making: targeted fund for Scotland s 32 local authorities with activities to commence at the beginning of 2016/17 school year in August. 2. Access to Music Making: to create music-making opportunities for young people aged 0-25 outwith school time. 3. Strengthening Youth Music: to support individuals, organisations and networks to undertake strategic action or training that will strengthen the youth music sector in Scotland for the benefit of young people. Priorities for the funding grants will be given to applications that propose specific actions and partnerships to engage young people who do not currently take part in music-making are are: Looked-after children and young people Residents in areas of social and economic deprivation From ethnic minority backgrounds Disabled and/or have additional support needs Those who have previously offended/at risk of offending Young carers and young parents In the early years (0-5 years) of their life Funding available: Between 1,000-40,000 at least 1.6M is available in 2016/17 for both open and targeted applications with 8M being distributed for schools based music making programmes. 11 The Gannochy Trust Grant Fund The Gannochy Trust grant makes funding available to a wide variety of projects across Scotland, ranging from major national flagship projects to smaller community projects. Funding is available for projects that aim to tackle social disadvantage, social and health inequalities, employment opportunities, poverty and disadvantaged young people. Over the next three years, a significant percentage of the Gannochy Trust s funds will be made to smaller, community led groups that are supporting children, young people and people who are disadvantaged or vulnerable. The Trust has identified 2 themes as priorities for , one of which is aimed at organisations across Scotland (with the other reserved for organisations based in Perth & Kinross). Inspiring Young People - aimed at young people aged under 25 across Scotland. The focus is on achieving a range of outcomes, including raising aspirations, developing talent, enhancing personal and leadership skills, developing young leaders and increasing participation as active citizens. Funding available: Between 1,500 and 200,000 towards revenue and capital project costs. Who is eligible: OSCR registered charities, with particular focus on those working with young people Deadline: Ongoing Website: The Ernest Cook Trust Grants Programme The Ernest Cook Trust (learning from the last since 1952) support schools, charities and not for profit organisations wishing to encourage young people s interest in the countryside and the environment, the arts or science and also those aiming to raise levels of literacy and numeracy. The Trust operates two grant making programmes, a small grants programme for awards of less than 4,000 and a large grants programme for grants of more than 4,000 to support projects which meet the Trust s objectives and require a small amount of pump-priming in order or their projects to take place. Recently funded projects include: Endelienta a grant of 1,000 enabled this charity in Cornwall to Funding available: Small grants: Under 4,000; Larger grants over 4,000. Who is eligible: state schools, small registered charities Deadline - Applications to the small grants programme can be made at any time. The next closing date for applications for the large grants programme is 31July
12 The Henry Smith Charity Main Grants Programme The Henry Smith Charity s Main grants Programme offers funding to groups experiencing social and economic disadvantage and to tackle problems in deprived areas. Applications for Revenue grants of 10,000 or more per year for work taking place in the UK can be made through the Main Grants Programme at anytime. Organisations who work with the following groups are given priority under the funding: Black, Asian and Minority Groups Carers Disability/Mental Health Domestic and Sexual Violence Drugs & Alcohol/Substance Misuse Former Armed Services Personnel Homelessness Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Prisoners/Ex-offenders Prostitution & Trafficking Refugees & Asylum Seekers Young People Funding available: 10,000 plus per year (Revenues Grant) making grants of up to 25M per annum Who is eligible: Charities/community organisations Deadline: Applications accepted at any time Website: Alexander Moncur Trust Based in Dundee, the Alexander Moncur Trust is a grant making charity which offers support towards cultural, educational, health and social projects based in Dundee. Grants made are usually around 5,000 and are awarded twice every year. Funding available: Up to 5,000; Up to 10,000 in specific circumstances Who is eligible: Registered charity organisations based in Dundee Deadline: 30 August 2016 Website: 12
13 Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland Henry Duncan Awards 2016 The Henry Duncan Awards, administered by the Lloyds TSB Foundation, offers grants which support grass roots charities based in Scotland which have an annual income of less than 500,000. Funding is awarded to programmes and services which focus on improving the circumstances of vulnerable people and disadvantaged groups. Organisations which support people who are affected by poverty, exclusion or discrimination and work to improve these groups well being are considered eligible under the grant funding scheme. The funding priorities for the 2016 awards programme included: Vulnerable children and young people Isolated older people People affected by disability and mental health issues Families living in poverty, particularly associated with welfare reform Carers The Henry Duncan award is offered to organisations who supply services, programmes and small projects which can demonstrate outcomes which either improve family welfare, reduce isolation. Improve health and well-being, increase independence, increase life skills and improve community cohesion and integration. Funding available: Up to 7,500; funding available towards salaries, operating costs, equipment and small capital projects. Who is eligible: Charities with an annual income less than 500,000 Deadline: 19 September Website: Sports Wheelchair Programme (UK) The Lord Taveners have reopened their Sport Wheelchair Programme which provides multi-sports wheelchairs to individuals under the age of 25 and clubs with a junior section to enable many more young people to try new sports. The Lords Taveners require a self-help contribution of 350 per chair and clubs are able to apply for up to five chairs. Applications can be made on behalf of individual youngsters or for club chairs. Funding available: Up to 350 per chair 5 chairs per application Who is eligible: schools, organisations and clubs that cater for young people under the age of 25 who have a physical/sensory/learning disability Deadline: No deadline but Lord Taverners advise to submit as quickly as possible Website: 13
14 Scottish Government Community Choices Fund The Community Choices Fund is available to public authorities, community organisations and community councils in Scotland to support participatory budgeting allowing local people to have a say in how public money can be used to support local needs. The programme will be targeted at work in deprived areas and will support projects to run the participatory budgeting process themselves. For public authorities projects should primarily (although not exclusively) be directed towards the cost of capacity building within the organisation to mainstream and embed participatory budgeting within the decision-making culture of the organisation e.g. peer learning, staff training, community supports and practical costs of running events. For community organisations the funding will need to include the amount to be allocated to participatory budget projects, support costs required to build capacity and take forward robust participatory processes. Funding available: 750,000 for public authorities (with the maximum bid being 100,000) and 750,000 for community organisations and community councils (with the maximum bid being 100,000). Preferred minimum is for projects of at least 20,000. Who is eligible: Public authorities, community organisations and community councils. Deadline: Midnight on 29th July Website: Hedley Foundation The Hedley Foundation s main objective is to assist and encourage development and change. Their priority is to support young people - their education, recreation, support, training, health and welfare. There are also two subsidiary objectives - disabled people and the terminally ill young people through funding for specialist equipment, organised respite breaks and holidays. The foundation also supports young carers. Funding available: Grants are for specific projects only and are usually up to a maximum of 5,000. Most grants are capital or one-off in nature. Who is eligible: registered charities Deadline: Trustees meet six times a year and the closing date for applications is three weeks beforehand. Trustees will meet on, 20 July, 14 September and 9 November Website: 14
15 Community Food and Health (Scotland) Annual Development Fund The Community Food and Health Fund is intended for capacity building for organisations running food and health activities in low-income areas. Funding is awarded to organisations in order to help build knowledge, skills and expertise of volunteers and staff. Grants of up to 500 are available to groups who are either working with people in a low-income community or are already involved in running food and health activities. Examples of what the grant funding can contribute towards include: Making sure staff and volunteers working with community members understand current nutrition messages and are confident about delivering these Helping staff and volunteers to develop knowledge, skills and expertise to deliver formal or informal learning opportunities to the people they work with Embedding expertise and skills around recruiting, retaining or managing volunteers Ensuring food and health activities are meeting community needs Supporting groups to take part in training so that they can deliver their services better Making food and health activities as inclusive as possible Demonstrating the impact of food and health activities Managing resources better/planning for the future Funding available: Up to 500 with funding to be spent by the end of March 2017 Who is eligible: Community groups, voluntary organisations & social enterprises, working with people in a lowincome community (of common interest e.g. homelessness or geographic); already involved in running a food and health activity. Deadline: 5 August 2016 Website: guidance-notes/ B & Q Waste Donation Scheme The B & Q Waste Donation scheme aims to donate unsellable products and materials for re-use by local schools, other educational institutions and community groups, for the benefit of the local community and the environment. Who is eligible: Schools, colleges, child minders, playgroups, nurseries, allotment associations, community gardening projects, youth groups, registered charities, conservation groups, community projects, other local community groups Deadline: Ongoing Website: 15
16 Future Funds: Coastal Communities Fund Big Lottery Fund Scotland The Coastal Communities Fund (CCF) aims to encourage the economic development of UK coastal communities by awarding funding to create sustainable economic growth and jobs. Since the start of the CCF in 2012 we have awarded grants to 218 organisations across the UK to the value of 125 million, over three funding rounds. This funding is forecast to deliver over 12,000 jobs and help attract over 240 million of additional funds to coastal areas. The Big Lottery Fund is delivering the CCF on behalf of UK Government and the Devolved Administrations in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Round 4 of the CCF opened to applications in Scotland in July At least 90m of new funding will be available across the UK from 2017/18 to 2020/21. Who is eligible: Public, private and voluntary sector organisations for projects that support the economic development of coastal communities Funding available: > 50,000 Website: 16
17 Grants Awarded in Dundee: A number of organisations have been successful in receiving a grant in recent months. If you, as an organisation have received a grant it would be great to hear about it! Dundee International Women s Centre Bridging the social gap for BME women Dundee International Women s Centre were successful in receiving funding from Awards for All Scotland for their Bridging the social gap for BME women project. The group received 9,800 of funding in order to provide a range of activities aimed at reducing isolation amongst women from black and ethnic minority backgrounds. Website: Bottom of the Hill Tenants Association Creating Change Bottom of the Hill Tenants Association were successful in receiving funding from Awards for All Scotland. The group received 9,800 in February for their Creating Change project, with the funding contributing towards aa sessional worker and art materials. Website: The Unicorn Preservation Society Frigate Unicorn Project The Unicorn Preservation Society was successful in obtaining funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. A grant of 10,000 was awarded for the Frigate Unicorn project, in recognition of Dundee s contribution to World War 1 and its legacy at sea. Website: Asda s 52,000 donation for Young Addiction Dundee A Dundee substance abuse project has been saved from closure thanks to a last-minute five-figure donation. Young Addaction Dundee, part of national charity Addaction, offers support to young of Dundee suffering from drug addiction and mental health problems. Working from their base in the city s Corner building, the group works with schools and colleges to offer advice and guidance around alcohol, drugs and legal highs. The project had been set to close, but has now been handed a late reprieve after a 52,000 donation from the Asda Charity Foundation. Innovate UK has up to 200,000 and a package of tailored support to award to businesswomen who have exciting ideas and the potential to become leaders in innovation and deliver significant economic growth. This is the first women only Innovate UK competition and is part of a new infocus initiative to encourage diversity in innovation. Each of the 12 finalists in the competition will receive a package of support tailored to their needs, and the four winners will each receive 50,000 to support their innovation project or activities. The competition opens on 1 June 2016 and the deadline for registration is noon on 24 August 2016 The awards are open to any woman in the UK working in business innovation in any of Innovate UK s four sectors Applicants can be a company owner, employee or sole trader in any size of business and must be legally and contractually able to use the grant funding on offer.
