Publishing with non-us data: Questions you hate but would need to address: Why Australia (China, or any other non-us country)? Can the theories, which have been developed in the US context, be applied to this country context? What are your theoretical contributions to the literature?

FDI Spillovers in an Emerging Market: The Role of Foreign Firms Country Origin Diversity and Domestic Firms Absorptive Capacity Zhang, Li, Li, and Zhou SMJ, 2010:

Research question: How may the diversity of foreign firms country origins affect FDI spillovers in an emerging market?

Phenomena Idea Data CNBS Data: ,462 domestic firm-year obs 81,054 foreign firm-year obs Theory Political leverage Knowledge search

Framework: Diversity of foreign firms country origins Domestic firm productivity Domestic firm attributes - Firm size - Technology gap with foreign firms

How to theorize the relationships? Political leverage argument What is the assumption of this argument? Can we justify this assumption? What would be the arguments for the moderating effects? Knowledge search and learning argument What is the assumption of this argument? Can we justify this assumption? What would be the arguments for the moderating effects?

Other issues raised in the review process: Spillover effect versus joint venture effect Calculation of FDI country origin diversity (based upon sales or number of firms from different counties) The confounding effect of the number of foreign firms Technology gap: industry level versus firm level The form of the moderating effect of technology gap Endogeneity check The role of geographic proximity (analyses at the national level vs. at the regional level)

How does this study contribute to the literature? Contribute to which literature? Go beyond FDI presence in an industry The role of FDI country origins Heterogeneity among FDIs in an industry The role of domestic firms as the recipients of FDI spillovers

Let s go to the Academy of Management Journal

Some AMJ Statistics One of four journals published by the Academy of Management Now in its 53rd year Receives over 1000 submissions per year Averages a 55-day turnaround for fully-reviewed submissions Second highest impact factor among Management journals (behind Academy of Management Review)

The Editorial Team Micro Macro Quantitative Joyce Bono, Univ. of Minnesota Jason Colquitt, Univ. of Florida Adam Grant, Univ. of Pennsylvania Jason Shaw, Univ. of Minnesota Ray Sparrowe, Washington Univ. Ben Tepper, Georgia State Univ. Marta Geletkanycz, Boston College Gerry George, Imperial College Kyle Mayer, Univ. of Southern Cal Gerry McNamara, Michigan State Tim Pollock, Pennsylvania State Anthea Zhang, Rice Univ. Qualitative Kevin Corley, Arizona State Univ. Tima Bansal, Univ. of Western Ontario

The Editorial Team What happens when a manuscript is submitted to AMJ? First stop: Mike Malgrande, Managing Editor Second stop: Jason Colquitt, Editor-in-Chief Reads submissions to determine desk decisions and action editor assignment Handles desk decisions for micro papers, delegates desk decisions for macro papers Third stop: Action Editor Chooses five reviewers in an effort to sign up three Makes final decision on manuscript

Improving Your Chances at AMJ Four most common themes for rejections: Theoretical Contribution Novelty Scope Technical Adequacy/Rigor

Theoretical Contribution Improving Your Chances at AMJ Excerpt from a decision letter The degree to which an article makes a theoretical contribution is an important point of emphasis for AMJ. Articles can make a theoretical contribution by either building theory or testing theory. What s important is that they change, challenge, or fundamentally advance our knowledge of the concepts, relationships, models, or theories embedded in the relevant literatures. In this way, they cause us to think about some organizational phenomenon in a way that would not normally be anticipated from extrapolations of existing work, thereby advancing future work in an important and useful way.

Improving Your Chances at AMJ Theoretical contributions may be developed in a variety of ways: Falsification of conventional understanding Theory building through inductive or qualitative research First empirical testing of a theory Meta-analysis with theoretical implications Constructive replication that clarifies the boundaries or range of a theory -Information for Contributors (AMJ website)

Improving Your Chances at AMJ Novelty Excerpt from a decision letter AMJ places a strong emphasis on the novelty of a manuscript s contribution when judging a submission. The journal s mission statement stresses that authors should strive to produce novel, innovative, interesting, and theoretically bold research. My sense is that the contribution of your article was more incremental than it needed to be, and that it lacked some of the boldness that the journal strives for in its pages.

Improving Your Chances at AMJ Scope Excerpt from a decision letter AMJ places a strong emphasis on the incremental contribution made by an article when judging a submission. The literature impacted by your study is a fairly narrow one. Moreover, although you note that your study fills some gaps in that literature, it must be noted that not all gaps are created equal. Some gaps are very nuanced or incremental, or have little impact on the state of knowledge in a given literature. Other gaps are more fundamental, such that the filling of the gap changes the state of knowledge in some important way.

Improving Your Chances at AMJ

Improving Your Chances at AMJ Get friendly reviews from colleagues who publish in, and review for, AMJ, at each of these stages: Topic choice Study design Writing

Improving Your Chances at AMJ

Reviewing for AMJ When authors submit a manuscript to AMJ using the Manuscript Central system, they are asked to sign up to serve as an ad hoc reviewer (if they are not already in the system) Contact an editor if you want to review for AMJ Ad hoc reviewers are asked to do 2-3 reviews per year

Reviewing for AMJ

Reviewing for AMJ

Reviewing for AMJ

Reviewing for AMJ

Reviewing for AMJ Earning an Invitation to the Editorial Review Board Scholarly productivity Reviewing quality Reviewing conscientiousness Turnaround time Percentage of invitations accepted Board members contribute 8-10 reviews per year, for the duration of the Editor s term. Board membership then resets when the next Editor takes over.

Takeaways Identifying interesting and novel research questions from phenomena Theorizing as conversations Who is your audience? Which conversation do you try to join in? To publish in top ties management journals requires novelty, contribution and scope Pay careful attention to structuring and house style Takeaways Structuring conversations using tables and logic of idea flow
