1 Page 1/5 Introduction Healthy Life demonstrates how the ageing population will put a strain on our healthcare system. This is because we will have a greater proportion of older people in the population and older people tend to need more healthcare. There are a number of solutions to this, including: the streamlining of medical procedures so that they need fewer resources; designing early detection programmes to try and avoid illnesses and ailments becoming critical (and more expensive to treat); and taking steps to ensure as many people as possible remain well and healthy. Illness and disease can strike anyone at any time in their life. For this project you will be looking at the preventable diseases and illnesses that are caused by people s lifestyle choices. For example, we all know about the dangers of smoking, over-eating and the consumption of alcohol. Your project is to invent a recipe that is tasty, healthy and easy to make and encourage others to try it. During this project you will need to find out: Which foods are the healthiest Different ways to prepare, combine and cook these foods How to test your ideas How to present the information for others to try Your main aim is to raise awareness of healthy eating and to provide people with an option to try for themselves. 2 Page 2/5 Healthy foods Many foods are fine to eat if in moderation and as part of a balanced diet, but instant foods and ready meals are often high in salt and fat to make them taste better and last longer on the shelf before they need to be eaten. It is often cheaper and healthier to cook from fresh ingredients. There are lots of lists of healthy food available on the internet and in some of the big supermarkets. Some foods may be completely new to you. Find out what the following are: Quinoa Lentils Zuchini Tofu Pomegranate Kale Here are some methods of cooking food, including serving them raw. Make sure you know what each method involves as not every food can be prepared every way. You also need to consider which ways of preparing foods are healthiest. toast griddle steam grill stir fry shallow fry barbecue boil raw bake deep fry Do some research and come up with some more healthy foods that you either like, or like the sound of if you haven t tried them. Find out how you could buy, prepare and cook them and other ways they can be eaten. Try to balance fruits, vegetables, grains, meats and fish and other foodstuffs, e.g. Food How they can be prepared Tomatoes Raw, sun dried, grilled, roasted, baked Kidney beans Which preparation methods are healthier

3 Page 3/5 Recipe solutions Cooking meals using fresh ingredients is a good way to make sure that no extra salt, fat or additives are included in your diet. Most people want to know what they are eating and would like to eat more healthily; however, ready meals are on the increase. Why do you think this is? Ask some friends, family and other adults why they think this is and write down their responses, e.g. Person asked Why do people use ready meals rather than prepare their own food? Mum Time is quite important. I work and still need to feed everyone in the evening after work. I don t always have time or energy to prepare something from scratch which could take an hour to make and cook. Ready meals are so much quicker! Look at the responses you got: What seem to be the main reasons that some people don t cook from scratch? Are they the same reasons that other people in the class discovered? Your recipe not only has to offer tasty, healthy food, but also has to overcome the resistance people have to preparing their own food. For each of the objections below come up with a solution: I don t have time to make anything in the evening when I get in from work I can t cook I don t have loads of ingredients in the house I don t like healthy food My mum doesn t want me mucking about in the kitchen Looking at your solutions, what do you need to mention in your recipe that helps people overcome their objections? For example: This recipe takes only 15 minutes to prepare, it only uses four ingredients and three of those will be things you have in the house already.??

4 Page 4/5 Recipe search Recipes need not be complicated or long. You are going to design a couple of meal ideas using the foods you like and test them with others. Using just three or four ingredients, research recipes that are healthy, easy and quick to make. Write out what you have found. Recipe Ingredients Notes Roasted vegetable pasta Pasta, courgettes, red peppers, sun dried tomatoes, cream cheese, fresh basil for garnish Takes about 30 minutes to make but most of that time is vegetables roasting in oven. Make up a few recipes and organise a tasting session with a group of people. Write out the recipe with a photo giving details and preparation time. Cooks in 30 minutes Ingredients: Pasta Yellow peppers Tomatoes Onions Rocket (for garnish) Processes used: Roasting veg in the oven Boiling pasta Then, after people have sampled your recipe, ask questions to find out what they thought. For example: Did you like the taste? What was good about it? What didn t you like? What about the flavour and the texture? Would you usually cook with these ingredients? It takes 30 minutes to make, could you see yourself cooking this? Is there anything you would add or replace? i You could try some of the suggestions people give you or make some variations to your recipes. Select some successful ones for a class display or a class recipe book.

5 Evaluating your work After you ve finished this project, evaluate how well your project met the original brief: Invent a recipe that is tasty, healthy and easy to make and encourage others to try it. How successful were you at discovering new ingredients and preparation methods? How successful were you at devising a successful recipe? What feedback did you get from your chosen recipe when you tested it? What do you know now that you didn t at the start of the project? Looking back on the project which was your favourite part to work on, and why? If you started the project again, what would you do differently? Page 5/5
