1 PhD in MECHANICAL ENGINEERING - 30th cycle Research Area n. 5 - Materials Number of scholarship offered 1 Department Dipartimento di Meccanica Description of the Research Area The Materials Line focuses on the study of production processes and characterization of materials for structural and functional applications. Excellent research products were obtained both on fundamental research topics (e.g. nanostructured materials, foamed alloys, chemical phenomena in liquid melts, microstructural design etc.) and on applied research (e.g. failure and damage analysis, texture analysis, high temperature behavior, coatings for advanced applications, etc.). Research projects carried out in recent years dealt primarily with three main topics: a) Steelmaking and Metallurgical Processes (SMP) b) Advanced Materials (AMT) c) Applied Metallurgy (APM) For further information: A selection of possible PhD thesis in Area 5 is listed here below and described in specific attachments; further research topics are also available. The assignment of a specific PhD topic to candidates admitted to the Programme will be defined at a later stage by the Faculty Commitee, after the beginning of the PhD. Scholarships allocated in this area may or may not be associated with the PhD topics presented here below. 1. Context of the research activity Motivation and objectives of the research in this field The research is aimed at the definition of hybrid surface modification process based on laser texturing of hard PVD coatings with a further possibility to impregnate the textured coating with solid lubricant in order to enhance lubrication efficiency and wear life of cold forming dies. Methods and techniques that will be developed and used to carry out the research The study of mechanical properties of coating by means of micro-indentation analysis and modeling is also expected. Educational objectives We provide doctoral candidates with high-level scientific training, fostering and refining research and problem solving abilities by focusing on both theoretical and experimental skills. Context of the research activity Motivation and objectives of the research in this field The research here proposed deals with the development of innovative Fe-based alloys to be used for the production of thick coatings by cladding or spin casting methods, aimed at significantly improving the service behavior of parts to be exposed in harsh environments. Methods and techniques that will be developed and used to carry out the research Novel alloys will be synthetized starting from elemental powders that are melted to achieve the most suitable microstructure. Control of carbide and boride composition, volume fraction, size and distribution is considered as one of the main parameter to be investigated. Educational objectives We provide doctoral candidates with high-level scientific training, fostering and refining research and problem solving abilities by focusing on both theoretical and experimental skills. Context of the research activity Motivation and objectives of the research in this field Age hardenable alloys as well as materials developed for high temperature applications (such as for aeronautical or power plant applications) suffer from microstructural instability when they are serviced at high temperature. The microstructural changes are related both to the initial material features and to service conditions to which a component is exposed. Methods and techniques that will be developed and used to carry out the research Models predicting microstructural should be introduced in models combining other high temperature degradation forms.
