A356 alloys were used to manufacture sand cast and gravity cast automotive components. These alloys were used commercially after the addition of grain refiners and eutectic Si modifiers to improve the strength. Recently researchers started adding Sc as eutectic Si modifier and grain refiner in Al-Si alloys and insufficient literature motivated us to choose this research topic. The effect of 0.2 and 0.4 wt.% Sc addition on the Secondary Dendritic Arm Spacing (SDAS), eutectic Si modification, phase modification, mechanical properties and wear behavior in A356 alloy and A356-5/10 wt.% TiB2 composite were investigated. The A /0.4 wt.% Sc alloys were processed by

2 adding Al-2 wt.% Sc master alloy to A356 melt. The A356-5/10 wt.% TiB2 composites were prepared by insitu reaction between K2TiF6 and KBF4 salts added in proper stoichiometric ratio to form TiB2 in the A356 alloy melt at a temperature of 800 C. Addition of Sc reduced the secondary dendrite arms spacing (SDAS) by 50% and changed the Si morphology from needle-like to fine spheroidal particles. Microstructure of Sc modified alloys which were cast for different holding times of 5, 30, 60 and 120 min indicated that there was no fading or poisoning effect on the SDAS and eutectic Si morphology. It was found that a Sc addition of only 0.2 wt.% in A356 alloy modified eutectic Si by changing its morphology towards a rounded and fibrous shape. The AlFe5Si phase with needle like morphology in A356 alloy was also modified to fibrous irregular shaped morphology AlFe5SiSc phase. Sc addition in A356 alloy results in the grain refinement, modification of eutectic Si and the modification of Al5FeSi phase, which was not attained by any other elemental addition. Hardness was increased due to addition of Sc in both alloy and composite. Aging heat treatment was also performed and an increase in peak age hardness in Sc containing alloys and composites was observed. Pin-on-disk wear tests and tensile tests indicated that Sc addition improves the wear resistance and tensile properties of A356 alloy and A356-5/10 wt.% TiB2 in-situ composite.
