4 Mission of the Program The English Opens Doors Program was created in 2003 to improve the level of English of students from 5 th to 12 th grade, through the definition of national English learning standards, a teacher training strategy, and classroom support for Chilean teachers of English. 4

6 CENSAL TOEIC BRIDGE APPLICATION IN % With certification Without certification 89% All students in 11th grade in high school were tested in 2010, and only 11% obtained level A2, which is the standard set for 8 th grade. In other words, only 1 out of 10 students has the level required for 8 th grade (but in 11 th grade), and none are close to B1, which is the standard set for 12 th grade.

9 Teacher training strategy Activity 2003 to Yearly English language proficiency courses scholarships provided to scholarships to be delivered each year. Methodology workshops for groups of teachers of English (during winter and summer breaks). 2 annual workshops for groups of 100 teachers, delivered in Santiago. 8 annual workshops for groups of 60 teachers, delivered in different regions. Methodology training for English teachers networks coordinators. 2 annual workshops, delivered in Santiago. Training Plan for the existing networks in 4 regions of Chile, in charge or American specialists in TESOL. Scholarship Semester Abroad, for future Chilean teachers of English. 664 scholarships provided. 110 scholarships.

10 Classroom support for Chilean teachers of English Activity 2003 to Distribution of the educational resource It s my turn, created to teach English to children in the rural areas. Distribution of sets for 5 th grade (in 2010). Distribution of sets for 6 th grade. Teacher training to assure correct use of the educational resource It s my turn. Insertion of English-speaking volunteers in the classrooms, as assistant teachers to Chilean teachers of English volunteer collaborated during this period. 270 workshops completed throughout the country, which have allowed training teachers from public schools. Currently recruiting 400 volunteers for 2012, who will impact students (each volunteer is in charge of 6 groups of 40 students, on average).

12 Teacher training strategy Activity Yearly English language proficiency courses. Methodology workshops for groups of teachers of English (during winter and summer breaks) on Primary teachers applications will be motivated, in particular of those who are currently teaching 5 th to 8 th grades. A regionalized strategy is currently being studied, which would be operationalized through Regional English Representatives. 4 workshops of 60 teachers each will continue to be delivered in each season, making sure to rotate the beneficiary regions. The participation of world specialists will be encouraged. Methodology training for English teachers networks coordinators. The training plan for the existing networks, in charge or American specialists in TESOL, will be set up in 4 new regions of Chile. Scholarship Semester Abroad, for future Chilean teachers of English. A follow-up plan will be organized, to ensure that the students who have graduated return the benefit by working 2 years in the Chilean Public System.

13 Classroom support for Chilean teachers of English Activity 2012 on Distribution of the educational resource It s my turn, created to teach English to children in the rural areas. Textbooks for new generations of 5 th and 6 th graders will be distributed throughout the country. Teacher training to assure correct use of the educational resource It s my turn. Follow-up workshops will be carried out in every region. Networks of rural teachers will be increased. Insertion of English-speaking volunteers in the classrooms, as assistant teachers to Chilean teachers of English. 400 volunteers will be placed in 400 public schools in the country. Besides the initial training, an extra plan will be implemented by the American TESOL experts, to strengthen the joint work of Chilean teachers and volunteers, particularly in session planning.

14 Student development Activity 2012 on English Camps for groups of talented students (during winter and summer breaks) students divided into 90 groups will be attending this activity in every region in the country. Spelling Bee Public Speaking Debates Tournaments 500 students (5 th and 6 th grade) will be attending this activity in every region. 750 students (7 th and 8 th grade) will be attending this activity in every region students (9 th to 12 th grade) will be attending this activity in every region. E-learning courses with tutorials students will be given the opportunity to do an English course online.
