2 Master of Art in Education Major: Instructional Technology Introduction Information technology (IT) has been developed mainly after inventing World Wide Web and the release of the Internet during the last decade of the last century, which positively affected all the fields of human life, including education, which began to integrate instructional technology into educational environment, such as, learning, teaching, and administrative work. The applications of IT technologies include electronic distance learning, multimedia, educational websites, etc. Needless to say, that are wise application of IT in education, depends on sound application of pedagogical principles which are derived from related theories. in this regard, instructional design comes first as a vital rule for producing educational software and websites, as well as, planning and evaluating the integration of instructional technology into the educational processes. Due to the expected roles of the Instructional Technology Departments in the College of Education at the King Saud University regarding the purpose of providing graduate studies which prestigious international universities, it developed its program based on reviewing similar programs at well known international universities and educational technology organizations. Objectives and philosophy of the Master: Instructional technology concentrates on following up the latest developments in the field of learning and teaching especially integrating modern technologies into the field of education and training in both private and public sectors. Because of the increased demand for utilizing of instructional technology in Saudi Arabia, and to meet the demand of teachers and trainers to develop their skills and knowledge in the field of instructional technology, this updated program has been developed. Program objectives: The program aims at achieving the following objectives: 1. To prepare manpower capable of integrating instructional technology into distance learning and training in both private and public sectors.

To develop knowledge and skills of learners and trainees in the field of designing, developing, producing and evaluating educational software and websites based on educational and scientific methods. 3. To qualify technical leadership capable of integrating instructional technology into educational environment, which in turn contribute to developing education and academic research as well as to acquire skills in utilizing information technology 4. To prepare leaders in the field of instructional technology that are able to adopt technology planning, and follow up with the technical advancement in education field. 5. To prepare graduate that are able to employ the international specifications and standards in the field of designing educational software and websites. 6. To prepare manpower that are able to evaluate educational software and websites based on international standards. 7. Developing distance learning and training literacy via modern technologies in the society through providing life long learning, as well as, learning and training programs. 8. Supporting the expansion of applying theoretical and technical bases in developing education and academic research. Admission Conditions To stand with all the listed conditions and terms of the graduate studies, the department imposes the following conditions: 1. The student should obtain bachelor degree with grade of very good. 2. To pass the writing examination assigned by the department. 3. To pass the interview assigned by the department. Or any condition will be added to improve quality of the department in the future.
4 Program Plans: The program is composed of two plans: Plan A and plan B. the student can chose one of them: Plan A Thesis option: this plan requires (37) credit hours and writing master thesis with (6) credit hours. The total graduation requirements is (43) credit hours. Plan B Courses option: this plan require (37) credit hours, and complete graduation project with (3) credit hours. The total graduation requirement is (40) credit hours. Prerequisite Courses A student who is not graduated from a college of education must take these courses: Course Name 1. 13 Courses Descriptions ITE 501 Foundations of Instructional Technology (2 credit) This course addresses the conceptual growth of the field through surveying theoretical and philosophical foundations of instructional technology including behavioral, constructivists, communication and general systems theories, as well as systems approach, audiovisual movement, programmed instruction, individualized instruction, and the definition and components of the field and contemporary issues. ITE 502 Educational Communications (2 credit) This course deals with contemporary communication models, including asynchronous and synchronous, as well as, the communications methods and techniques that enhance learning and training. The course also addresses barriers of communications and recent development in the communication field definitions. Additionally, it discusses the applications of modern communication channels to combine among contemporary communication to enhance learning and teaching. ITE 507 Electronic Distance Learning (2 credit) This course focuses on the importance of electronic learning in general and distance learning in particular with respect to the development and continuous learning. Moreover, it concentrates on the IT used in the field of distance learning. Models used in open and virtual universities will be examined, as well as, using those models in life long learning. Finally, the course includes planning and implementing e-distance learning projects. ITE 510 Instructional Design and Development of Instructional and Training Programs (2 credit) This course deal with principles and processes of instructional design including needs assessment, task analysis, instructional specifications and requirements, development, and evaluation. the course addresses design of e-materials such as e-book and learning web sites based on educational and psychological theories of instructional design, as well as surveying instructional design models.
14 ITE 515 Computers in Instruction (2 credit) This course examines the role of computer applications programs in instruction and their integration in the instructional process. These programs include text processing, presentation design, spreadsheet, and web design programs. In addition to the development of computer literacy skills, the course investigates computer assisted programs, such as, drill and practice, problem solving, tutorial, learning games, and simulation programs. ITE 520 Integrating Information Technology into Learning Environment (2 credit) ( Prerequisite: 507, 515) This course covers the processes of technology planning which includes: developing vision and mission, goals, resources selection, cost, technical support, staff development, strategies of diffusion and adoption of technology, and integrating of information technology into learning environment. Moreover, it explores samples of best practices in technology integration. ITE 525 Digital Photos Technology (3 credit) This course concentrates on selecting and handling and preparing the images that go with the academic subject via Photoshop and Desktop publishing. Also, it aims at developing the learner ability in producing photos to support educational software and websites development. ITE 535 Production of Digital Multimedia (2 credit) (Prerequisite: ITE 510, ARED 510 or ITE 525) This course focuses on utilizing new tools to produce educational software that enhances K-12 learning. It deals with Hyperstudio, Authorware, Flash, and so on, as well as, implementing new methods of multimedia design that combines various resources such as, animations, sound, text, diagram, etc. ITE 555 Evaluation of Instructional Digital Resources (2 credit) (Prerequisite: 535) This course concentrates on the scientific bases and principles of evaluating educational software and websites, it includes using the templates of various evaluations according to the educational level and subject matter, in addition to identifying the evaluation standards issued by international organizations specialized in the field.
15 ITE 560 Management of Learning Resources Centers (2 credit) This course deals with establishment stages of learning resources centers, and determining components of those centers along with their functions. Furthermore, it addresses the types of information technology utilized in these centers, such as the internet, computers, educational software, etc. Finally it discusses rules and responsibilities of learning resources specialists. ITE 570 Diffusion and Adoption of Instructional Innovation (2 credit) This course focuses on strategies of diffusion, adoption, and integration of instructional innovations into educational systems; educational change strategies and models; contemporary models of educational reforms in the local and international environment. ITE 575 Independent Study (2 credit) This course deals with a number of topics relevant to instructional technology and its applications, which includes learning, research, teaching, technical administration and the administrative leadership based on the technical advancement. It provides students chances to discuss the varied research in reviewed scientific Arabic and English journals in order to develop research skills. ITE 580 Project (3 credit) The student is required to develop and to apply new ideas based on skills, knowledge, and experience acquired in this program. the student needs to acquire his/her professor and department agreement to the project. ITE 600 Thesis (6 credit)
