Modern Control Systems, Dorf Prerequisites: ECE 3300 Class Communication: I will post regular announcements to Blackboard, which you should check daily, since important information, deadlines and reminders this way. Attendance Policy: Online Procedures: Course Goals: This is an On Line course, so attendance is not applicable; however, it is expected that you will view each of the On Line Lecture videos and study the Lecture Notes on Blackboard. You will be responsible for all of the material covered in class, both from the notes and the textbook. All materials, except for the textbook, will be provided on Blackboard. Homework due dates and procedures for submission will be posted on Blackboard. Procedures for taking On Line exams will also be posted on Blackboard. The goals for this course are to provide the student with an understanding of, and a proficiency in the analysis of, continuous time systems. The students will: 1) Learn how to apply mathematics to the analysis of control systems for continuous time systems, 2) Learn how to apply MATLAB for analyzing and designing control systems for continuous time systems, and 3) Learn how to design timedomain and frequency-domain controllers systems to meet needs. Logistics: To keep up with course announcements, you need to check the ECE 4090 Blackboard site on a regular basis. All the material you need for the course is on the Blackboard site. The site contains the lecture notes, homework assignments, homework assignment due dates, homework solutions, extra homework problems, course notes, upcoming test dates, test solutions, and much more. A suggested study pace will be provided and you are strongly encouraged to follow it. Homework: Exams: Homework Assignments along with solutions are posted on Blackboard. Students are required to work out the problems, scan them into a PDF file, and submit their assignments at the end of the semester as a single PDF file. The PDF file should be ed to the TA. Working the homework problems is essential to the learning of the material in this course; in fact, most of your learning will come from doing the homework. It is expected that your homework will represent your own work, although working in groups is allowed, and even encouraged. Late homework will not be accepted. There will be 1 closed book midterm exam and 1 final exam. You will be allowed to have two handwritten sheets of paper for the midterm exam as well as the final exam on which you may write anything you wish. Exams will be multiple choice. Exam dates are listed in the Course Schedule at the end of this syllabus. Summer

2 Exam Administration: Exams must be taken with a pre-approved proctor. Proctors must be a supervisor of the student at a place of employment, a member of the clergy, a librarian, a teacher, or some similar profession. Proctors should fill out all of the information on the proctor form and a PDF to the co-instructor by last day of the month in May. The proctor form is on Blackboard. If you are in or around Clemson, you have the option of requesting the instructor as your proctor as well. Note that the notification deadline applies still holds. Exam Attendance: Calculators: Academic Integrity: Disability Access: Conduct: Title IX: If you cannot attend an exam for any reason, I should be notified ahead of time if possible, otherwise at least on the day of the exam. Except under very unusual circumstances, no makeup will be given without appropriate notification. You will need a scientific calculator for this class. In particular it should be capable of solving simultaneous equations and inverting matrices for both real and complex numbers. Some problems, however, may not involve numbers. 3 Grading: ECE 4090 Continuous Time Systems Final grades will be determined by averaging the homework, exams, and the final exam based on the scale below. If a student s final exam grade is higher than this weighted average, the final exam grade will become the final course grade.
