1 Revised August 2013 PSYCH 2314: HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT WEB-BASED COURSE SYLLABUS Psych 2314: Human Growth and Development This course examines the relationship of the physical, emotional, social, and mental factors of growth and development throughout life. Prerequisite: TSI complete in Reading. Human Growth and Development addresses the physical, cognitive, and psychological changes we encounter as we pass through life, from pre-natal development to death. Students taking this course will be allowed to explore, discuss, and learn about important developmental psychological principles and to apply these principles in understanding their own respective growth and development. REQUIRED TEXT: Experiencing the Life Span, 3 rd Custom Edition, 2013, by Janet Belsky. Worth Publishers, New York, New York. ISBN # COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALUATION: Your grade will be determined by performance on the following: Weekly Forum Participation (15% of final grade) Unit Exams (85% of grade) Final Exam (counts as two exam grades) Requires a campus visit or use Proctor U. UNIT EXAMS (60% of final grade) Each exam will cover two chapters, including reading assignments, power point lecture notes, videos, discussions and activities for those chapters. Exams will consist of 50 questions, a combination of multiple-choice and true/false. Exams will be available every other week from Wednesday morning at 6am until Saturday afternoon at 1pm. Absolutely NO make-up quizzes will be allowed. ONLY ONE ATTEMPT IS PERMITTED. WEEKLY DISCUSSION FORUMS (15% of final grade)

2 Each week you will be required to participate in a discussion forum. To receive full credit, you will need to post at least two responses. Initial responses must be posted by 11pm on Wednesday of each week. Your second and additional responses are based on your reactions to classmates responses. Responses limited to I agree or me, too will not receive points. Additional responses MAY result in a higher grade, if they are of high enough quality. Second and additional responses must be posted by 11pm on Saturday of each week. Students are limited to sic (6) posts each week. COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAM (25% of final grade) The final exam is comprehensive; that is, it covers all sections of the course. It will consist of 100 multiple choice and true/false questions. A final exam study guide will be made available the week prior to the final exam. You will take the final exam at the Kilgore College Testing Center in Longview. If this testing center is not convenient for you, YOU will be responsible for putting your instructor in contact with the college testing center closest to your home, so that special testing arrangements can be made. If this is not convenient, you may pay to use Proctor U, via the internet. More instructions will be given about Proctor U. LATE ASSIGNMENTS AND MAKE-UP TESTS There are NO opportunities to makeup missed exams. COURSE NOTES: Reading Assignments: READ EARLY AND READ OFTEN. You are responsible for completing all reading assignments in order to prepare questions about material you found difficult and to contribute meaningfully to discussion forums. ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION: You are expected to log onto class regularly (i.e., four to five times per week) because activities and discussions as well as your unique contributions are valuable. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you miss more than two weeks of course work, you MAY be dropped from this course, but the ultimate responsibility for withdrawing, if necessary, lies with YOU. DROP DATE: All course drops and/or withdrawals from enrollment, whether instructor or student initiated, shall result in a W if processed during designated drop periods. After that time, a performance grade will be given in each course in which the student is enrolled. All deadlines for dropping and/or withdrawing with a W are calculated at 75% of any semester, term or mini-term and current dates may be found in the college calendar, class schedules and on the college website. Documentation of all drops and withdrawals must be on file in Registrar s Office by the end of business on each deadline date for a W to be assigned. It is the student s responsibility to drop classes and/or withdraw from enrollment by the deadline to receive a W. (Kilgore College Catalog, )

3 STUDENT CONDUCT: Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner. This includes making thoughtful, relevant comments, and respecting the thoughts and opinions of others. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: It is the responsibility of students and faculty to help maintain scholastic integrity at the college by refusing to participate in or tolerate scholastic dishonesty. Plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty undermine the very purpose of the college and diminish the value of an education. Specific sanctions for academic dishonesty are outlined in the Kilgore College Student Handbook available in the Office of the Vice President of Student Development, located in the Devall Student Center. Foundation Reading Assignment: Chapters 1-2 Upon completing this course, the student should be able to: (1,2,3,4) 1. List and describe the major approaches to the study of human development. 2. Explain the relationships of DNA, genes and chromosomes. 3. Define conception and explain the fertilization process. 4. Identify and discuss the stages of prenatal development. Infancy

Discuss physiological growth patterns of early childhood. 3. Describe cognitive development of early childhood. 4. Explain emotional and personality development in early childhood. 5. Define middle and late childhood and identify its developmental tasks. 6. Discuss physiological growth patterns of middle and late childhood. 7. Describe cognitive development of middle and late childhood. 8. Explain emotional and personality development in middle and late childhood. Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood Reading Assignment: Chapters 8-10 Upon completing this course, the student should be able to: (1,2,3,4) 1.
