Coverage includes theories and current research on the domains of physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development, with a focus on how biological and environmental factors interact to influence development in these domains. The prerequisite for the course is sophomore standing. REQUIRED READINGS & MATERIALS This course requires a textbook (hardcopy or ebook access) and access to the Connect Plus website for the textbook. Thus, the books sold in the bookstore will contain an access code to the Connect Plus website. The required textbook and ISBN numbers for the course are below. Santrock, J. W. (2012). Essentials of Lifespan Development (2 nd Ed). McGraw-Hill: New York, NY ISBN (Paperback Text and Connect Plus Access): ISBN (ebook and Connect Plus Access): Additional course materials and study aids might be provided on mycourses, but Dr. Terranova should also be considered as a study aid. Just stop by his office or him if you are having problems understanding or completing course material. Though he studies aggression, he is not a very aggressive person. So, don t be afraid. PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES or PLOs (What should I learn with a degree in Psychology from SFA?) PLOs are broad goals regarding outlining what students should learn through their coursework in Psychology. The Psychology Program has 5 program learning outcomes, which are all addressed to some degree in this course. These PLOs are outlined in the following chart.

2 Program Learning Outcomes Proficiency Level 1. The student will demonstrate familiarity with the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology. Intermediate 2. The student will understand and apply basic research methods in psychology, including research design, data analysis, and interpretation. Basic 3. The student will respect and use critical and creative thinking, skeptical inquiry, and, when possible, the scientific approach to solve problems related to behavior and mental processes. Basic 4. The student will understand and apply psychological principles to personal, social, and organizational issues. Intermediate 5. The student will value empirical evidence, tolerate ambiguity, act ethically, and reflect other values that are the underpinnings of psychology as a science. Basic SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES or SLOs (What should I learn from this course?) By the end of this course, students will understand and apply developmental knowledge and theory as evidenced by their ability to 1. describe and apply the major theories of cognitive, social, and emotional development across the lifespan. 2. describe and identify examples of normative changes in physical, cognitive, social and emotional development across the lifespan. 3. describe challenges associated with specific developmental periods. 4. identify processes whereby biological and environmental factors interact with one another to influence development. 5. articulate how research and theory on normative development can be applied to personal and social problems. COURSE REQUIREMENTS What do I need to do to do well in this course? 1. Read Course Material. Reading course material will directly and indirectly impact students grades. Reading course material will directly impact a student s grades, as there will be periodic course assignments that will require students to have read the assigned readings to complete the assignment. Reading course material will also directly impact students grades because portions of the exams will be on reading material that will not be covered in lecture. Reading course material will indirectly impact students grades because knowledge of the reading material will be required for class discussions and participation in these discussions is likely to lead to a deeper understanding of the material. Students are responsible for ALL assigned readings and should complete readings BEFORE the scheduled class meetings so that students can participate fully in class discussions. 2. Attend Class Regularly (Attendance Policy). Attendance will be recorded during class meetings, and absences will affect students grades because portions of the exams will be on lecture material not covered in the required readings. Attendance might also affect student s performance because students must attend more than 75% of all course meetings in order to be eligible to benefit from extra credit assignments. If a student fails to attend more than 75% of the course meetings, he or she will not be able to earn extra credit. It is the student s responsibility to obtain missed lecture materials and announcements from classmates. If a student misses a course meeting, the student should contact a classmate to get a copy of the announcements and notes covered during that course meeting, and the student should read the assigned readings for that course meeting. If the student has specific questions about the notes or readings, then contact Dr. Terranova as soon as possible. Students who are required to miss class due to participation in university sanctioned activities or professional conferences must identify themselves with Dr. Terranova at least one week prior to missing class to make arrangements to complete the missed work before its due. If a student decides to stop attending the course, it is the student s responsibility to drop/withdraw from the course. The instructor will not drop/withdraw students from the course. 3. Participate in Class Discussions. Students are expected to participate in class discussions and activities. Though not directly graded on participation in these discussions and activities, participation will lead to a deeper understanding of course material. If there is a lack of participation in discussions, the professor reserves the right to modify the syllabus to start awarding points for participation in discussions. Page 2

3 4. Follow Instructions. Students should carefully read all instructions before completing examinations and assignments. If students have questions about the instructions, feel free to contact Dr. Terranova. Failure to follow instructions will result in a deduction in points for all assignments and examinations. 5. Thoughtfully Complete Coursework. Ultimately, the quality of students work is graded on assignments and exams. Thus, thoughtful completion of coursework will result in better grades. 6. Turn Coursework in On Time. Timely completion of course assignments also will directly affect students grades. Although some assignments might be accepted late with a penalty, not all assignments will be accepted late. A description of the policies on when assignments are due and the penalty for late assignments is discussed below in the Assignments & Papers section. How will my knowledge and understanding of coursework be evaluated? Students knowledge and understanding of course material will be evaluated through a combination of assignments and examinations. Assignments & Papers: Students will be expected to complete the following assignments. Syllabus Quiz (10 Points). The syllabus quiz is an on-line quiz that contains questions about course policies and procedures that are discussed on the syllabus. Moral Development (10 Points). Students will respond to the Heinz Dilemma and must rate their response on Kohlberg s stages of moral development, explaining why their responses rank on a given stage. Research Summary (20 Points). Several scientific articles will be posted on the course website in Blackboard. Students will need to select one of these articles that they find interesting and respond to a series of questions requiring them to summarize the article and relate the article to developmental issues presented in class. Last Lecture (10 Points). Carnegie Mellon University was sponsoring a lecture series entitled the Last Lecture. The premise of the series was for the speakers to examine the final lessons they would want to impart when facing their own mortality. During this series, Randy Pausch, a Carnegie Mellon professor in his 40 s was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Students will watch his lecture in this series and relate his messages to various theories on adult development, death, and dying. If a hard copy of an assignment must be submitted, then it is due at the start of the course meeting on the scheduled due date (see the Tentative Course Schedule) unless otherwise noted when the assignment is announced or in the instructions of the assignment. If the assignment must be submitted electronically, the assignment must be submitted 30 minutes prior to the start of the course meeting of the scheduled due date (see the Tentative Course Schedule) unless otherwise indicated when the assignment is announced or in the assignment s instructions. Students will have 48 hours after the assigned due date to submit other assignments late for a 10% penalty, unless otherwise noted in the instructions for an assignment. No excuses are needed if an assignment is submitted before the late submission deadline. No assignments will be accepted after the 48 hour extension except in the cases of extreme emergencies, and when arrangements were made prior to the assignment s original due date (not the late submission deadline). The details and instructions for assignments generally will be announced in class and/or posted on mycourses as the assignment due date approaches. For assignments that require writing, APA style should be followed unless otherwise noted in the instructions for the assignment. Spelling and grammar will be considered when grading written assignments. None of us are good at everything. So, if writing is not one of your strengths, it is recommended that you make an appointment to work with someone in the Academic Assistance and Resource Center (AARC). The AARC is on the first floor of the library, and they will provide technical writing assistance for assignments and papers. It is really a great resource! More information can be found at or students can call (936) If submitting an assignment electronically via the Assignments tab of mycourses, the assignment must be in either a Word (.doc or.docx) file format or in Rich Text Format (.rtf) unless otherwise noted in the assignment s instructions. If a student submits a corrupted file, a blank file, or a file in the wrong format, the file will not be considered submitted. It is Page 3

4 each student s responsibility to submit completed assignments in the correct file format on time. If instructed to submit the assignment via the mycourses, Assignments tab students are encouraged to both upload a file and copy and paste the text of the assignment into the response field provided. This will ensure that even if the attachment cannot be opened (or if the wrong file is attached), the student s submission can be accessed. Exams: There will be five examinations in the course, each worth 100 points. The exams will measure students knowledge and understanding of course material, emphasizing the material that relates to the Student Learning Outcomes for the course. Four examinations will measure students knowledge of course material covered since the last examination. The fifth exam will be a comprehensive final. Students will have one course meeting to complete each regularly scheduled exam, and two hours to complete the final exam. No extra time or special accommodations will be provided, unless prior arrangements have been made through the Office of Disability Services. See the Students with Disabilities section below for more information on obtaining permission for special accommodations. The exams will be composed of multiple choice, matching, and true/false questions. Students should submit their on Scantron form If a student misses an exam, the student has 48 hours to contact the instructor (whether by phone, , or personal meeting) to make arrangements to make up the exam. As always, is the preferred method of communication. An excuse is NOT required. All make up exams will be composed primarily of short answer and essay questions. Students must complete make-up exams before the next regularly scheduled exam. There will be no make-up exams for the final exam except in extreme emergencies, and documentation will be required to verify the emergency. GRADING POLICY (How will my grade be calculated?) Syllabus Quiz 10 A = % of Points Moral Development 10 B = 80-89% of Points Research Summary 20 C = 70-79% of Points Last Lecture 10 D = 60-69% of Points Exams (100 Points Each) 500 F > 60% of Points Less than 330 Total Points Possible 550 Please note that the grading scale is firm. I do not round up if students are close to the next highest grade. I also cannot assign extra work for one student after the semester has ended in order for that student to raise his or her grade. So please do not ask. Posting Grades: Grades will be posted on mycourses ( ). When grades are posted, an announcement will be posted on mycourses indicating the grades for that assignment or exam have been posted. Please do not or call inquiring if grades are posted until this announcement is posted. To protect student confidentiality, students performance cannot be reported or even discussed over the phone, , or instant message. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY, Policy A-9.1 (Don t cheat because bad things will happen!) This course adheres strictly to the University s policy on academic integrity. Academic integrity is a responsibility of all university faculty and students. Faculty members promote academic integrity in multiple ways including instruction on the components of academic honesty, as well as abiding by university policy on penalties for cheating and plagiarism. Definition of Academic Dishonesty. Academic dishonesty includes both cheating and plagiarism. Cheating includes but is not limited to (1) using or attempting to use unauthorized materials to aid in achieving a better grade on a component of a class; (2) the falsification or invention of any information, including citations, on an assigned exercise; and/or (3) Page 4

5 helping or attempting to help another in an act of cheating or plagiarism. Plagiarism is presenting the words or ideas of another person as if they were your own. Examples of plagiarism are (1) submitting an assignment as if it were one's own work when, in fact, it is at least partly the work of another; (2) submitting a work that has been purchased or otherwise obtained from an Internet source or another source; and (3) incorporating the words or ideas of an author into one's paper without giving the author due credit. Please read the complete policy at Withheld Grades Semester Grades Policy (A-54). Ordinarily, at the discretion of the instructor of record and with the approval of the academic chair/director, a grade of WH will be assigned only if the student cannot complete the course work because of unavoidable circumstances. Students must complete the work within one calendar year from the end of the semester in which they receive a WH, or the grade automatically becomes an F. If students register for the same course in future terms the WH will automatically become an F and will be counted as a repeated course for the purpose of computing the grade point average. FINAL NOTES Students with Disabilities. To obtain disability related accommodations, alternate formats and/or auxiliary aids, students with disabilities must contact the Office of Disability Services (ODS), Human Services Building, and Room 325, / (TDD) as early as possible in the semester. Once verified, ODS will notify the course instructor and outline the accommodation and/or auxiliary aids to be provided. Failure to request services in a timely manner may delay your accommodations. For additional information, go to Classroom Etiquette & Acceptable Student Behavior. Classroom behavior should not interfere with the instructor s ability to conduct the class or the ability of other students to learn from the instructional program (see the Student Conduct Code, policy D-34.1). Unacceptable or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Students who disrupt the learning environment may be asked to leave class and may be subject to judicial, academic or other penalties. This prohibition applies to all instructional forums, including electronic, classroom, labs, discussion groups, field trips, etc. The instructor shall have full discretion over what behavior is appropriate/inappropriate in the classroom. Students who do not attend class regularly or who perform poorly on class projects/exams may be referred to the Early Alert Program. This program provides students with recommendations for resources or other assistance that is available to help SFA students succeed. Some important aspects of acceptable student behavior are outlined below. Respecting Others. During class, it is important students do not do anything to distract their peers. This includes any use of a cell phone, surfing the web on your laptop, or talking with other classmates. During discussions or when other students ask questions, students should be respectful of their classmates rights to express their opinions and/or pose questions. The instructor reserves the right to ask students to leave class if that student s behavior interferes with the learning process. If anyone in the classroom is engaging in disruptive behaviors, students are encouraged to speak with Dr. Terranova as soon as possible. Coming to Class Late. Please make every effort to be on time for class. If you are late for a class meeting, enter as quietly as possible and take one of the seats closest to the door. Do not walk in front of the instructor. Cell Phone Policy. OMG, turn off all cell phones during course meetings. Too Much Information: Though students are encouraged to engage in class discussions, this is not necessarily the appropriate venue to discuss personal concerns. Should any of the topics discussed in class cause you concern or distress, please make appropriate arrangements to discuss these issues with the professor privately. Setting up Before Class: When Dr. Terranova arrives early to class, it is to set up the computer and get everything ready for the upcoming class meeting. If you need to speak to Dr. Terranova about something, please wait until after the class meeting or visit him during his office hours. Page 5

6 Changes in Course Requirements. The instructor reserves the right to revise the syllabus and course requirements as necessary. Anytime the syllabus is revised, a new syllabus will be posted on mycourses and an announcement will be made. Students are responsible for keeping up with syllabus changes. . , via your campus account is the official means of communication for the university.
