5 1. Fitting To Chippings This is the ideal method for fitting Valverdi Indoor-Out 20mm porcelain to external pedestrian areas. Laid with a 1.5mm open joint, the surface is self-draining and will generally* not require any additional drainage. This fixing method complies with Sustainable Drainage principles and will help reduce the flood risk in our communities. When fitting to chippings, expansion joints will not be required. Valverdi Indoor-Out 20mm tiles can be cut with a suitable diamond saw. However, with careful design cutting can be minimised by laying out the project so that full tiles are used, which leaves a gap around all or part of the perimeter (typically mm wide). This gap can be filled with a decorative aggregate, which will further enhance your project s self-draining capability. A wide range of fittings for the 20mm tiles can be ordered, including round edge, pool edgings, L shapes and step nosings. *Additional drainage may be required if your sub soil is impervious (e.g. clay) or if the water table is very high. In these instances the water will not be able to drain naturally into the ground and will need to be transported to an area where the water will be able to soak into the ground. Your landscaping contractor will be able to advise. Additional drainage may also be required for large installations of Valverdi where flash cloudbursts could overburden the sustainable drainage. strength beauty resilience 5

6 Setting Out & Drainage While the installation will be self-draining, it is important to incorporate a small fall to allow water to drain from the surface of each tile. Excavate ground to sub-soil to allow for a build up depth of 340mm. After excavation, check for poor ground, soft spots or organic matter which need to be removed and repaired. Lay a geotextile over the excavated and prepared sub soil and lay 270mm of 40mm cleaned and screened crushed concrete chippings. Compact and lay a second geotextile and cover with 50mm 3-6mm chippings (not rounded gravel or pea shingle). Compact and level. Any falls should be incorporated in the crushed concrete bed and mirrored in the 3-6mm chippings. Any falls should be in one direction only. Use a screed rule or other suitable straight edge to smooth the surface and set out for tiling. Simply lay the Valverdi Indoor- Out 20mm tiles onto the bedding surface without disrupting the bedding surface. Before placing the second tile, position a Valverdi Super Deep 1.5mm spacer on a corner of the tile (if laying in a broken bond pattern, the spacer can easily be turned into a T spacer by snapping off a spacer arm). It is important that the spacer is used to prevent the tiles coming into contact with each other. Keep laying the tiles in this way until finished. If necessary, the tiles can be cut using a suitable diamond saw. If a gap has been left to the perimeter, fill until level with the surface of the tile with the decorative aggregate of your choice. If one or more perimeter is going to over-sail the chipping restraint, consider using a round edge fitting. 7 Examples Of Suitable Restraint The bedding layer of chippings needs to be restrained; consider where these restraints will be positioned to minimise cutting of the 20mm Valverdi tile. A good tip is to position the restraining walls such that full tiles can be laid, leaving a mm gap between the edge tile and the wall. This can be filled with a decorative aggregate to enhance drainage. This gap can be incorporated around all perimeter walls, some or none; it is your choice. 9 2. Pedestal Fitting Valverdi Indoor-Out 20mm porcelain is incredibly strong. This high strength allows the tiles to be laid onto a pedestal system, which makes them ideal for roof terraces and balconies. There are three types of pedestal: 1. Fixed height Spacer Pedestal for use on a flat sloped surface. Available in 12mm, 15mm and 20mm heights with a 3mm adjustment shim to make up minor irregularities. 2. Adjustable Pedestal for irregular heights from mm finished floor height. Available in 25-40mm, 40-70mm and mm heights. 3. Adjustable Self-Levelling Pedestals for irregular and sloping heights with a maximum variation of mm finished floor height. Available in mm and 50-75mm heights. strength beauty resilience 9

10 Fixing Valverdi Pedestals The pedestal system allows for quick and easy installation with low fixing cost. Laid without a filled joint, the water will drain to the surface below and drain away using the established falls of the balcony or roof terrace below. You will first need to establish the highest point of your proposed floor. This will normally be somewhere just below the underside of the door leading to the area being tiled. Does this space allow sufficient room for a 20mm tile and a pedestal? You will next need to establish how even your sloped surface is or, if it is not even, how much it varies from evenness. If it is an even sloped surface, then use fixed height Spacer Pedestals of a suitable height (see fig 1). If the surface has irregularities (typical on asphalt surface) but overall is an even sloped surface, use Adjustable Pedestals (see fig 2). If the surface has more than one slope then use the Adjustable Self-Levelling Pedestals, but check that the potential adjustments on the Self Levelling Pedestals are sufficient to overcome the height differences that might cause lipping between tiles (see fig 3). Fitting Onto Reinforced Concrete With Grouted Joints Valverdi Indoor-Out 20mm porcelain can be laid directly onto a cured reinforced concrete base using suitable polymer modified cement based tile adhesive. The tiles must be laid into a solid bed with no voids. Appropriate expansion joints should be incorporated through the concrete slab and against perimeter structures as required. The concrete screed should be laid with appropriate falls to allow for drainage. 12 strength beauty resilience

13 Laying Valverdi 20mm Porcelain For residential patios, a geotextile should be laid over the sub soil followed by 150mm compacted sub base of DTp type 1 aggregate or similar. A 100mm reinforced concrete bed strengthened with A142 reinforcing steel grid should be laid directly on top of the prepared sub base. If light vehicular traffic is expected, increase the sub base to 200mm thickness and use A393HD reinforcing bars. 14 4. Fitting Onto Lawns Valverdi Indoor-Out 20mm porcelain can be laid amongst your lawn for a natural look to your garden. 14 strength beauty resilience

15 Laying Valverdi 20mm Porcelain Place the tiles where you want them laid and, using a turf edging tool or small spade, cut around each tile to a depth of about 75mm and level. Remove the turf and topsoil. Using a tile as a template cut out a square from a piece of geotextile and lay in the hole. Cover with 50mm of 2-6mm chippings, tamp down and level.
