2 BALCONIES AND THEIR LOADS For that extra bit of pleasure, the Remmers Balcony and Terrace Programme In many cities, balconies have a great leisure and recreational value. And as versatile as the architecture of our buildings are, the construction of balconies and terraces also take many forms. Balcony surfaces are always subjec ted to three different kinds of loads. The Balcony and Terrace Pro gramme from Remmers offers alternatives that can withstand these loads and, at the same time, make the surfaces extremely attractive. Waterproofing with tiles Coatings made of liquid plastics Climate places the highest demands. Balconies are subjected to strong sunlight and since they have no roof or are only partially covered, rain, snow, heat and frost find unhindered access. Tem pera ture fluctuations of up to 70 C are possible. Chemical loads resulting from acid rain, rotting leaves, cleaning agents, de-icing salts and spilled beverages also take their toll. Mechanical loads are constant through abrasion from walking or pushing objects as well as chair and table legs. These loads primarily attack the protective layer, i.e. the coating or cover. 2

3 Safety through Elasticised, Cementitious Waterproofing If the waterproofing fails, the damage is great With elasticised, cementitious waterproofing, a continuous bond is created from the sub-construction all the way up to the final tile cover. A waterproofing system consisting of Kiesol and Elastogrout 1K or Elastogrout 2K that is placed on a sloping screed has the advantage of keeping the sub-construction dry. Damage caused by alternating freeze-thaw loads doesn t have a chance. Because of its high crack-bridging properties (1.0 mm), the waterproofing stays tight. Elasticised cements that are compatible with the system such as Flex Cement make sure there is an excellent bond between the tiles/slabs and the substrate. The cover is not only used to look good; it also has the function of protecting the waterproofing. The entire package is rounded off by using the flexible, cementitious joint mortars: Flex Joint, Flex Pearl Joint or the epoxy resin bound joint mortar, ColorJoint EP. Preparing the Substrate The substrate must be sufficiently flat and free of through-cracks. Screeds should be at least 28 days old. Our Technical Information Sheets provide exact details for preparing the substrate. If there is no slope but sufficient height, place a bonded screed with falls to allow water to run off. Execution: Apply a cementitious bonding layer using PCC Primer Place a screed to falls made with PCC Mortar N, wet-on-wet, over the primer. Screed can also be produced at the building site with the addition of Haftfest polymer to sand, cement and aggregate. Waterproofing The layer of waterproofing is then applied to the concrete, screed or tile substrate directly beneath the new tile cover. Water stops: First, all of the connection joints in the wall-floor connection as well as expansion joints in the substrate are elastically sealed. Prime the contact surface with Kiesol diluted 1:1 with water, then apply the flexible waterproofing grout Elastogrout 1K or Elastogrout 2K to the absorbed but still matt-damp primer. Press Water Stop B 200/300 using a tongue trowel into the fresh waterproofing grout, bedding the fabric edge into the joint connection area. A fresh coat of the waterproofing grout is applied at the same time to the fabric area. This produces seamless and jointless waterproofing on the surface. Gaskets for floor drains and pipes passing through the substrate as well as interior and exterior corners are also integrated, wet-on-wet, into the waterproofing. Drain gutters are bedded into the screed according to the directions given by the manufacturer. As a rule, the punched plate profiles of the drain gutter are bedded between the elastic waterproofing grout using Reinforcement Fabric 2.5/100 or 2.5/25 (see illustration on page 5, item 1). Surface Waterproofing Surface waterproofing is executed in two layers using the flexible waterproofing grout Elastogrout 1K or Elastogrout 2K over the absorbed primer with Kiesol. Each layer of grout should be 1lmm thick with an application rate of 1.5 kg/m 2. The second layer of grout is applied after the first has set to touch dry (depending on temperature minutes). Apply the waterproofing grout over the entire surface. Avoid applying layers that are too thick (several mm). In the wall connection area the waterproofing is led up the wall at least 15 cm above the surface of the floor or up to the upper edge of the plinth tile. Application rate: 3 kg for two layers. After 48 hours, the waterproofing can be subjected to foot traffic and is water tight. 3

4 WATERPROOFING BALCONIES RELIABLY AND PERMANENTLY Laying Tiles or Slabs The Fast Way to Reliably Reach Your Goal Waterproofing bonded with ceramic tiles provides a very economical and permanent solution to the problem. Because of the simple construction of the system, using surface waterproofing that can be brushed on and quick formation of details, only little time and material are required. Bonded waterproofing is just as suitable for new balconies and terraces as it is for restoring old. Laying Tiles and Slabs on Bonded Waterproofing On principle, the lightest colour possible and highly frost resistant covers should be laid to keep heating, deformation and the absorption of water in fragments (e.g. fine stoneware) to a minimum. The tiles are cemented full surface over the Elastogrout 1K or Elastogrout 2K bonded waterproofing to prevent moisture from collecting beneath the cover. To lay the cover, deformation capable, hydraulic setting, thin-bed cementing mortar Flex Cement or Fast Flex Cement is used in a buttering-floating procedure. Flex Cement bonds with high adhesive strength practically without inherent stress, has a very long working time ( 30 minutes) and since it is very smooth, it can be applied without damaging the layer of waterproofing. In a bond with the flexible waterproofing layer, the entire construction can compensate the usual stress in this building element. If waterproofing was executed over old tiles using Elastopox, the new tiles are cemented with Tile Cement EP. Grouting After the cementing mortar has set (as a rule after 1 day), the surface of the tiles is grouted. For joints between 3 and 20 mm wide, the hydraulic fast setting, plastic modified joint mortar Flex Joint is used. For a cementitious joint mortar, it absorbs very little water. The tightness of the system construction against water can be further increased by using Color Joint EP which produces practically water tight joints. Movement joints are executed 10 mm wide to above the water stop. If possible, expansion and connection joints are pre-filled with backing rods after which the joint is closed permanently elastic, using Multi Sil. The joint sealing compound is self-adhesive, similar in colour to the joint filling compounds and easily smoothed with soapy water.
