Revolusional invention of steam engine by James Watt, who patented in 1769, was instrumental in the growth of coal use. Here, the early history of coal mining and the use that can not be removed from the history of the Industrial Revolution, particularly those related to iron and steel production, rail transport and steam ships. The use of coal as a primary energy source began to decrease in line with the increasing use of oil, and finally, since 1960 oil on top position as the primary energy source to replace coal. Oil crisis in 1973 caused by the difficulty of the effort to fulfill a continuous supply of energy made worse by the security conditions in the Middle East (as the largest oil producer), was very influential on the fluctuations in price and supply stability, the world community gone back to the coal, with a few reasons: 1.Very large deposit of coal and widespread through out the world, both in the developed and developing countries, including Indonesia, which is one of the country has large coal reserves about billion tons (70% of it is a low calorie coal while 30 % the rest is high quality coal). 2.Coal can be obtained from many sources on the world market with a stable supply, prices are cheap compared with oil and gas. 3. Coal is safe to be transported, stored, stacked around the mines, power plants, or a temporary location and the quality is not much affected by the weather or rain. 4. Utilization of Clean Coal Technology has been developed through a process of coal gasification for Synthetic Gas (with environmentally friendly emissions) as a source of heat and fuel is very cheap alternative to be applied to equipments such dryer, heater, burner, including Generator Electricity Reasons for Development of Coal Gasification Technology This technology is a way to get Synthetic Fuel Gas through coal gasification process, including low calorie, it is known that Indonesia is very much in reserves (about 85 billion tons) of Lignite is a source of raw material that can be used in this technology (recommended for use 4500 kcal or more) With the abundance of coal reserves must be made more cheaply while its distribution network continues to expand. Fuel as one component of the dominant production costs continue to burden the industry with prices rising sharply since 2005, let alone fuel prices in the country is highly dependent with the world market, while its reserves were declining.
