9 9 Friday Night Activities Goal Setting and Time Management: Finding a successful time management strategy depends on each individual s personality, ability to self-motivate, and level of self-discipline. This course introduces established methods for improving a Venturer s ability to effectively manage a daily timeline in his or her life. Development of Faith, Self, and Others: Being able to develop into a better person while working on the awards is a key aspect of the entire Venturing program. This class will breakdown what this requirement is and then help you achieve it. You are required to do one for the Discovery Award and the other two for the Pathfinder. Complete a structured personal reflection, and use this reflection and what you learned from the process to prepare for goalsetting and as part of your Discovery Award Advisor conference. Discovery requirement 6 or Pathfinder requirement 5. First Aid: Take this course to learn about the Ranger First Aid requirement, Quest requirement, and become knowledgeable of basic first aid skills. Be prepared. * Ethical Controversies: Participate in two ethical controversies with fellow Venturers and then facilitate one with a small group. This class will help you understand making decisions on a dayto-day basis and help you create a plan for completing the final step, leading an ethical forum with your crew. This will complete the Venturing Trust Award requirements I (part I and II). Respecting the Beliefs of Others: You will be able to talk to a professional regarding freedom of religion in America. This will provide you with a unique opportunity to learn a little about the U.S. Bill of Rights, talk to someone knowledgeable on the subject, and share your opinions. After discussing these topics, you will be guided in picking a religion to study (one that isn t your own) and then share the information you find with others. You will complete the Venturing Trust Award requirements from section 3, parts a, b, and c (part i only). Feel free to bring electronics to this class to help you study the religion of your choice. *You will not become First Aid Trained, but there will be resources available for you to complete this requirement outside the event. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to contact the VP of Training Rachel rhouse@nfcbsa.org or our Advisor Karen karen.jewell@nfcbsa.org

10 10 Saturday ILSC: The purpose of the Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews course is to teach crew members with leadership positions about their new roles and how to most effectively reach success in that role. It is intended to help Venturers in leadership positions within their crew understand their responsibilities and to equip them with organizational and leadership skills to fulfill those responsibilities. Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews is the first course in the series of leadership training offered to Venturers and is a replacement for the Venturing Leadership Skills Course. Completion of Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews is a prerequisite for Venturers to participate in the more advanced leadership courses National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) and the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE). It is also required for Kodiak. Complete requirement 3 for the Discovery Award. Creating a Project to Grow Venturing: Plan, organize, and give leadership to a project designed to sustain and grow your crew. Submit the plan to your crew president (or staff member present) and explain how you think it will encourage more young people to join Venturing. This course will help you come up with great ideas to help your crew succeed. Completes Pathfinder requirement 8. Cooking Core Value: You will get to cook your lunch using different methods of cooking that could be fire/coals, charcoal, or a stove. Spend this wonderful time with Mr. John Willis (Venturing cook) and complete requirement 3c-f. In this class you will demonstrate and explain proper safe food-handling methods for outdoor cooking, how to properly use a backpacking stove, prepare a meal with the four basic food groups, and cook using a Dutch oven. This plan is subject to change depending on amount of participants. Disabled Sports Movement: In this class you will study the history of the disabled sports movement, learn about a specific disabled sport (of your choice), and plan an awareness clinic for your group. If you plan on attending this class, you will need paper, pens, and some device for research. We will have limited technology available for research. Cultural Studies: In addition to learning about other cultures, you will also complete the Venturing Trust Award requirement 2b which is analyzing the Scout Oath and Law. You will research and present your findings about inter-cultural conflicts in the world today or how cultural groups affect the U.S. melting pot. You will also have the chance with the North Florida Council s all-markets executive to learn which programs are being used in our area and why. Learn about BSA resources designed for specific cultural groups and how they may differ from the resources you are familiar with. Service: Work with everyone at this event to help improve the River Base. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to contact the VP of Training Rachel rhouse@nfcbsa.org or our Advisor Karen karen.jewell@nfcbsa.org

11 11 Outdoor Ethics: Learn about the seven principles of Outdoor Ethics and play some fun games that relate to these principles. You will also get to make a tabletop display describing how these principles affect the environment and attitudes of many today. You may bring electronics to help you research ideas for the tabletop display, but materials for the display will be provided. Completes requirements 6a and 6c of the Ranger Award. Land Navigation: With this course you will be able to complete all the requirements for the Land Navigation core requirement for the Ranger Award. This includes learning how to orient yourself using a compass, hiking a 2.5 mile course, learning how to use a GPS, and teaching your new acquired skills to others. Sport Disciplines: You will choose and develop a profile of a typical athlete in a sport of your choice, develop a list of necessary equipment, discuss the relative important equipment that plays toward your success in that sport, and tell how the equipment has improved over time. You may want to bring an electronic device that can help you with this information. Complete requirements 5a and 5b for the Quest Award. Quest Essentials: In this class, you will be able to do several different things that will help you achieve part 1(a,b,e-l) of the Quest Award. You will be split up into groups to do some of the following: Demonstrating First Aid Skills (learned Friday) Making a presentation with a group regarding sportsmanship Making a set of training rules for a sport you will pick Making a display on a selected sport for your crew covering sport etiquette, equipment, history, and basic rules Discussion on drug abuse Recent training techniques being used by world-class athletes Ways to test body density Researching an Olympic athlete Discussing the importance of nutrition What s Left: Each group will meet with an assigned staff member to discuss what requirements remain for their selected award/advancement. The staff will help you set up a plan on how to complete each award and give you resources to do so. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to contact the VP of Training Rachel rhouse@nfcbsa.org or our Advisor Karen karen.jewell@nfcbsa.org

You will also meet someone from a different cultural background discussing their culture. Wilderness Survival: Write a risk management plan for an upcoming crew high-adventure activity. Special Activity: After a long weekend of training, it s time to have some more fun. There will be several different things going on during this time including Archery. Everyone is going to have a good time and enjoy some fellowship with friends. Closing Ceremony: Everyone that participated this weekend will be getting something.
