2 Purpose to help make conference attendees aware of the Fitness for Life Elementary* Wellness Curriculum how it can help any organization that works with K-6 grade students, to incorporate an enjoyable and effective wellness curriculum into an on-going program with minimal time needed for preparation and implementation. * Corbin, Le Masurier, Lambdin & Greiner, 2010
3 Objectives At the end of the presentation attendees should be able to: Know about various wellness components incorporated into the Fitness for Life Elementary Wellness Curriculum and view some examples of these components Know how the program works developmentally from kindergarten through sixth grade Know the types of staffing utilized for incorporating this program into the organization, Be able to self-assess whether the program could be successful in their organization

Program designed to promote wellness, physical activity, sound nutrition, and healthy lifestyles throughout the entire school Educational Foundations Addressing mandates for Comprehensive School Wellness Plan Standards Based Philosophy Handout #1 - Executive Summary FFLES (Corbin, et al., 2010, p. 17)
5 Wellness Weeks The FFLES program has materials for 4 Wellness weeks, conceptualized for one each 9 weeks of the school year Themes and Message for Each Wellness Week Each grade has developmentally appropriate variations for both fitness and nutritional activities See Samples for free at:
6 Picture This. 4 weeks out of the year the entire school is seen cheering and moving together for a healthier school community All children are simultaneously exercising and clapping for nutritious eating All teachers are contributing to your school health and physical education program Activity and nutrition are the central focus of the entire week!

11 What FFLES is NOT A comprehensive health or physical education curriculum designed to replace current quality Health and Physical Education programs. A program just for Health or P.E. Teachers Only for Fitness Fridays.and Wellness Wednesdays.
12 Who is a Wellness Coordinator? As part of the comprehensive school health programs, schools are responsible for having a comprehensive school health plan The Guide for Wellness Coordinators is designed to enable a school designated (not necessarily the P.E. or Health teacher) individual to spear-head the programs. This person will organize the program throughout the year, and would be in charge of planning, newsletters, working with cafeteria personnel, classroom teachers, and specialists.
