2 Our fantastic clinical teams work extra hard to get as many patients as possible home for Christmas, but sadly, many children will have to spend the festive period at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). ree Meet Hugo, aged th Hugo was born at University College Hospital London in December 2010 and immediately transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at GOSH. He was born with a condition called exomphalos, which meant his liver and some of his bowel were inside his umbilical cord, resulting in a large balloon-like structure growing outside his body.hugo was incredibly poorly and unable to breathe for himself, so when he arrived at GOSH, he was operated on straight away, and then went on to spend three-and-a-half weeks on NICU. Hugo s mum Nicola said: To say this was an incredibly difficult time for us would be the biggest understatement in the world, so to have this room to go back to, which we now know is down to charitable support, was amazing. It would have been unbearable to leave Hugo. During that time, Hugo s mum and dad stayed close by at family accommodation funded by the charity. This period was made extra hard for Hugo s parents given the fact they should have been spending their first Christmas at home as a family. It's an event that s sure to get you giggling as you line up with 3,000 other Santas for some festive fundraising for charity. After three more operations at GOSH, Nicola was told in February this year that Hugo wouldn t need any more surgery for the foreseeable future: I cried all weekend I felt a million different emotions, says Nicola. With both a 5km and a 10km route, Santas of all abilities can get involved, and you get your Santa suit for free.
