1 Annual School Development Report Guidelines and Template The Annual School Development Report replaces the School Report Card completed annually by the principal in accordance with the revised (1997) Schools Act. It is submitted annually, usually in October to the School Council, the Director of Education, and the Department of Education. The report should also be placed on a school s website and be made available in an appropriate format to parents and other members of the school community. The reports primary purpose is to give an update on the schools 3-5 Year Plan. This plan is the culmination of a school s initiative to internally review itself using provincially prescribed criteria. The resulting 3-5 year school development plan is outlined in the report with a yearly evaluation of its objectives and a brief summary of its most current assessment data. The report also contains messages from the principal and school council chairperson as well as an overview of the school community. The following template, with guidelines, for completing the Annual School Development Report is designed to assist principals and other school staff in preparing the report. A sample Annual School Development Report is also available on this site.

2 Front Page The front page should contain the name and address of the school and the district s mission and/or vision statement. A graphic, picture, or school logo is optional.

3 1. Message From Principal and School Council (1 page) This section should consist of two messages, one from the principal of the school and one from the school council chairperson. The messages should reflect the level of stakeholder involvement in the School Development Process, give commendations where appropriate, build capacity, and show support for the plan.

4 2. Overview of School (1-2 pages) (see sample) School s Mission Statement Include here the school s mission statement. The mission statement should reflect the goals of the 3-5 year plan. Our School Community This section should include a brief demographic description of your school community, its location, enrolment, grades, class size, communities served, staffing information, and itinerant services. Programs Provided Included here should be the programs provided by the school. Make note of special programs offered beyond the prescribed curriculum and the number of courses offered at the high school level. Key Highlights/Special Projects In this section highlight your school s special initiatives, programs, projects, recognitions, and awards. Partnerships Summarize here any partnerships your school has developed with the school community, or with any agencies, businesses, or organizations that have contributed to the success of the school.

7 4. Report on Most Current Data and Last Year s School Development Plan (200_-0_) (4-5 pages) School Development Plans are developed and revised using the most current data available to the school. This section contains a brief summary analysis of the school s most current data, including both quantitative and qualitative data gathered at the provincial, district, and school level and a report on last year s school development plan. The data from both are used in two ways: (1) to help determine the level of success in meeting last year s objectives, and (2) to appropriately revise or develop new objectives for the current year. Summary Analysis of Most Current School Data All raw data pertinent to a school should be analyzed thoroughly at the school level, but not all data needs to be reported in this section. This section should include data relevant only to the current School Development Plan, or new data that is considered critical and subsequently causes revision to the current plan. The data presented in this section should be summarized using an anecdotal format, or by using charts, tables, and graphs. Appropriate comparisons should be made to district and provincial data and standards where relevant. Explanatory notes should be included where applicable to assist in the interpretation of the data. Every effort should be made to ensure that all relevant data is reported and interpreted accurately, using appropriate terminology for the intended audience. Note: Schools that have not had formal School Development Plans last year and have just completed their Internal Review should give an anecdotal summary of their Critical Issues identified in their Internal Review. Report on School Development Plan for Previous Year (200_-0_) In the template below, write in the goal, objectives for each goal, and a brief evaluation of each objective including any recommendations or commendations. The evaluation column of the template, though brief, should indicate if the objective has been achieved. Note: Schools that have not had formal School Development Plans last year should give an anecdotal summary report on any major issues addressed at the school in the previous year.

Critical issues are sometimes identified through the School Development process, but may not be directly related to a specific goal. 10 5. School Development Plan for Current Year (3-4 pages) The school development plan for the current year is part of a 3-5 year plan developed using the Provincial School Development Model. The school s plan is revisited yearly using the results from the Report on School Development Plan from Previous Year and the Analysis of Most Current School Data. While a school endeavors to meet the target dates of its 3-5 year plan, it recognizes that its plan is flexible, that revisions may occur annually, that new goals may arise, and that some goals may be longer or shorter than the duration of the plan (i.e. a goal may be targeted for 2 or 4 years within a 3 year plan). This section outlines the School Development Plan for the current year. The templates list the goals, objectives, indicators of success, intended strategies, and support plans. Included in this section is the Operational Issues Report. Critical issues are sometimes identified through the School Development process, but may not be directly related to a specific goal.
