Intercultural Train-the-Trainer Course Program
Become a Certified Intercultural Trainer! Our modular course is available in English - in Berlin and now also in Bangkok! Intercultural communication and diversity management have become main topics within adult education and in-company training. While the occasions and reasons may be different, ranging from the preparation for foreign assignments through to supporting multinational project groups and creating a welcoming culture at the domestic workplace, the requirements of clients are crystal clear: trainers must be able to effectively communicate intercultural and diversity topics as well as to provide instruction for groups of culturally diverse participants. BAMIK is one of the most reputable providers of train-the-trainer programs with a focus on intercultural topics and diversity. Based in Berlin, Germany, we have been conducting our modular intercultural train-the-trainer course with great success since With our certificate you will show your clients that your intercultural or diversity trainings are state-of-the-art and sustainable. Our successful alumni include numerous freelance or employed trainers focusing on a wide range of topics. When will you get certified? For 2016, we are happy to offer our course in English on two occasions. You can now chose between our Summer Academy in Berlin and our new Intercultural Train-the-Trainer (3T) Academy in Bangkok! Sincerely yours Wolfgang Jockusch Director and Senior Trainer 2

About the Intercultural Trainer Certified trainers are needed in many situations Intercultural and diversity competence are required in a wide range of situations. And this wide range is reflected in the versatility of fields in which intercultural trainers may work. Our intercultural train-the-trainer course is the ideal program for you, if you... are specialized in a specific national culture or region and want to improve your cross-cultural training methodology. work in diversity management, helping teams to better appreciate their cultural diversity. want to support companies to improve their employer branding for their international recruitments and to develop a welcoming culture. offer trainings on topics other than intercultural communication to participants from different cultural backgrounds. work in human resource management and are in charge of foreign assignments. want to show your clients or employer by means of a certificate that you work in accordance with recognized and state-of-the-art standards. 4
Modular Course in Berlin and Bangkok Our modular structure gives you full flexibility in planning your course The course is structured in four modules. Each module comprises an attendance seminar with 24 units. In addition, some hours are required for covering course material and preparing your own presentations. In two modules you will present a training unit on an intercultural or diversity topic of your choice which will then be assessed by the group. We will record this presentation for you on video so that you can make your own personal assessment after the module. In 2016 we offer the full course (all four modules within two weeks) in English on two occasions: We will offer the English modules also in future years. So, if you are unable to attend all four modules during one of our two academies in 2016, you may complete the course in the following year. On eight dates per year, we also offer single modules (three days) in Berlin. These modules are in German and begin on a Monday afternoon. Participants who are proficient in German, are welcome to combine modules of both languages. For details, please check the module calendar at the end of this brochure or on our website. Jan 11-23: Jul 25 - Aug 5: Bangkok, Thailand Berlin, Germany The modules are designed to ensure that you can start at any time and can cover the modules in any sequence you wish. This means that you can combine modules in Bangkok and Berlin at your convenience. 5
Module 1: Concepts of Culture From the definition of culture to the job profile of an intercultural trainer An in-depth analysis of the many approaches to culture is at the center of this first module. We look at which definitions are appropriate for use in training and how they define the participants job profile of the intercultural trainer. On the first day, we discuss culture from an academic perspective and derive its numerous interpretations historically. From there, we make the practical connection to intercultural training and provide you with tools for an effective introduction, including methods to visualize cultural preferences. On day three, we look at the mutual influence of culture and religion. In many situations intercultural and interreligious cannot be separated. For trainers, especially those without a religious background, this is can be a challenge. The overall goal of the module is to guide participants towards their own professional profile as intercultural trainers. While this will be an ongoing topic in the other modules, too, these three days will show the broad spectrum of theoretical concepts in which the intercultural trainers are operating. The second day is dedicated to the comparison of cultures using different approaches towards identifying and analyzing culture. We discuss in detail the significance of the works of Hall, Hofstede, Trompenaars and others for intercultural training. 6
Selected Contents of Module 1: Culture : how to find a definition that can be used in intercultural training. Inter-cultural / multi-cultural / trans-cultural three approaches and their influence on intercultural training. Dimensions of cross-cultural comparison and their practical application in intercultural training. Training methods for the analysis and visualization of value systems. Religion and intercultural training. Short introduction to intercultural philosophy: important thinkers from Hegel to Bhabha. Job profile of the intercultural trainer. 7
Module 2: Curriculum Development for Intercultural Training Steps towards a sustainable course design The sustainability of any training depends on a solid course design and a good methodology. In this module we will introduce you to our concept for the development and implementation of effective intercultural trainings. On day one, we focus on the needs assessment. Understanding the needs and goals of the clients is paramount. Here you will learn how to position the intercultural training in the larger context of organizational development. The second day is very practical: We work on your precision in defining learning targets for the intercultural training as well as the development of the training concept. In a workshop, participants will design two curricula - one for a general cultural awareness training and one for a training on a specific national culture. Sustainability also depends a lot on the transfer concepts through which the contents of the intercultural training are connected with the daily work life of participants. Therefore, on the third day, we highlight what comes after the training: transfer and evaluation. Overall, this is perhaps the most technical module in our intercultural train-the-trainer course. As in all modules, we will enhance your methodology by introducing classic and new tools for intercultural instruction. With our concepts of assessment, curriculum development and transfer/evaluation you will meet the certification criteria of all major educational associations. 8
Selected Contents of Module 2: Introduction to intercultural adult education Needs assessment for intercultural training in organizations Defining target groups Taxonomies of intercultural learning Learning targets in intercultural training Curriculum development for cultural awareness trainings and for country-specific trainings Training methods Role plays and simulations Transfer and evaluation methods 9
Module 3: Intercultural Conflicts in Training Action strategies for conflicts in the everyday life and work of the trainer Conflicts and minor disruptions are part and parcel of everyday training. The intercultural context, however, adds a particularly sensitive dimension of potential causes of conflicts. This module illustrates and conveys strategies to maintain and restore a productive working atmosphere within the training group. On the first day, we analyze intercultural conflicts from two perspectives: We look at conflicts that triggered the training in the first place as well as those, which arise during a seminar. You will learn how to identify the causes for conflicts, keeping in mind that the core of the problem is in fact is not always of an intercultural nature. One problem which may arise is a lack of acceptance of the trainer on the part of the group due to cultural differences. Especially when this is based on age, gender, ethnic background or similar factors, appropriate coping strategies are important. We will discuss these in depth in this module. 10 On the second day, we look at the process of conflicts from a cross-cultural perspective. This includes a comparison of various models of group dynamics and escalation/de-escalation strategies. Complaint management for trainers as well as available channels for neutral arbitration and a short introduction to intercultural mediation are elements of the third day. Throughout the module, we will discuss real conflict situations with you. Some may be shared by you, others are based on our experience or case studies. As in all modules, participants will be invited to present their own training units. In this module, however, we will add some conflict simulations, thus giving you an opportunity to practice your conflict resolution skills on within the protected environment of this course.
Selected Contents of Module 3: Intercultural conflicts in training or Conflicts in intercultural training? The role of culture in conflicts Fundamental skills in handling disruptions within the group Adapting training targets in case of conflicts Acceptance problems of the trainer Transaction analysis from an intercultural perspective Causes of conflicts, and anticipation 11
Module 4: Intercultural Human Resource Development How to manage cultural diversity and foreign assignments in organizations Training is an important instrument of intercultural human resource development. Whoever wants to be successful as a trainer needs to know the needs and procedures within companies. In this module, we will look at the market and the means by which (cultural) diversity in an organization can be managed. On the first day, we show you the various tasks within intercultural human resource development. Based on an organization that places the idea of a welcoming culture at the center of its corporate culture, we will develop a vision for its future development. show parallels and differences. Since national culture and religion are given substantial space throughout the course, we will now concentrate on age, disability, gender and sexual orientation. Day three is dedicated to the classical tasks of intercultural human resource development in the context of foreign assignment management. This includes potential conflicts before, during, and after an assignment but also tools to assess intercultural competence. Finally, a connection to the services provided by relocation agencies will be made. On the second day, we look at other forms of diversity within an organization. Diversity Management and intercultural management are closely related but also distinct from each other in many points. Here, we will 12
Selected Contents of Module 4: Introduction to intercultural human resource development The place of intercultural training within human resource development Employer branding in the context of diversity Diversity Management vs. Intercultural Management Diversity categories from an intercultural perspective Managing foreign assignments - from preparation to re-integration Tools for measuring intercultural skills Culture-sensitive selection of staff 13
Final Certification Show the world that your trainings are state-of-the-art and sustainable After each attended module, you will receive a certificate of participation. Once you have completed all four modules, you may register for the final certification, which comprises the following elements: 14 Written curriculum for an intercultural or diversity training of 16 units (45 minutes each) Presentation of one unit (45 minutes) from the submitted curriculum Oral examination / interview (20 minutes) Dates and places for certification are offered based on demand. We recommend that you calculate at least six weeks between completing your last module and the certification. In addition to our own, accredited certificate Intercultural Trainer (BAMIK) we offer optional certifications through our cooperation partners.
