2 A hose reel in principle is a storage device for a length of hose, designed to preserve the life of the hose, implement sound health & safety (by preventing trips and falls) and provides good housekeeping. Hoses are therefore ready to use and stored on a functional and safe device. Hose reels are now available for thousands of applications from simple manual operated low pressure air reels to double hosed electric motored oxy-propane combined welding reels. A hose reel can be a time saving tool, and when set up correctly can help a business revolutionise current practices both obligational and profitable. There are many factors to consider when selecting a hose reel thankfully ERIKS Hose Technologies will help you select the correct hose and hose reel for the application. Reel Power Hose reels can be powered by a number of different sources, the most popular are manual and spring rewind. Manual reels require the user to physically roll the hose, using a handle or hand crack (dependent on the size and weight of the hose and reel). Spring rewind reels include a built in pre-tensioned spring, once unlatched the hose will automatically retract. Electric motor driven reels and pneumatic reels are also becoming more popular in areas where the length & weight of hose becomes much greater than a spring rewind can withstand. Type Of Media Hose reels can be suitable for a vast range of media including but not limited to the following: Liquids: Water (1 C 90 C), jetting water (high pressure), Diesel, Gasoline, Aviation Fuel, Oils including waste oil (5-1500cst), Greases NLGI 000-3, food grade products (1-1500cst dependent on pressure) & chemicals Gases: atmospheric compressed air, breathing air, oxygen, nitrogen, propane, welding gases & vacuum Other media can also be used with hose reels. Environment & Site Conditions The environment & site condition the reel will be exposed to, may dictate what materials the reel can be manufactured from. It is paramount to include site conditions or specialist requirements to ensure that the reels not only meet regulations, but also stand the test of time given the conditions the reel will be subjected to. HOSE I.D, O.D. & LENGTH When space permits, select a reel with greater hose capacity than you require. This allows you to rewind the hose with less care and keeps the hose well protected within the disc dimension, even if the hose is not wound in uniform coils. (See hose selection on next page) 2. SIZE & TYPE OF SWIVEL JOINT & SEAL FOR INLET & OUTLET In selecting your reel please note the size of your hose versus the inlet and outlet sizes. Reducing your fitting & hose size will allow for more hose capacity. 3. RETRACTION METHOD & CORRECT USE Choose from Spring Driven, Hand Crank or Motor Driven retraction. SPRING DRIVEN: Automatic rewind requiring no power source. Operator is to guide the hose or cord as it self-retracts and wraps around the drum. HAND CRANK: Operator must manually crank the reel and guide the hose or cord evenly as it wraps around the drum to reach full capacity. MOTOR DRIVEN: Requires a power source to operate in AC, DC, Air or Hydraulic power. On/Off switches and speed controllers are available to help control retraction speed. You must guide the hose or cord efficiently back on the reel to reach full capacity. 4. MOUNTING POSITION Determine which mounting position you require. Most reels have several mounting positions that change the angle that the reel pays out. This makes it easier for the operator to collect the hose and helps to evenly stack the hose when retracting. 5.
