6 Characteristics of Tsunami Damage -Death Toll/Missing: over 600 deaths; 180 missing - Residential Housing: about 6,900 houses were totally destroyed and many were partially destroyed - Agricultural Fields: about 1,800ha of fields were flooded, etc. - Industrial Facilities: factories around Sendai Port, etc. were badly damaged. - Utilities: Minami-Gamo Water Purification Center, Sendai Port Gas Plant, etc. were damaged. - Transportation Infrastructure: Sendai Port, Sendai Airport, etc were majorly affected. 6

14 Characteristics of Residential Housing Damage - Ground collapse and landslides occurred in hillside residential areas that were developed during the 1960s and 1970s. - About 3,000 building safety inspections have been carried out as of the end of April. 620 buildings were deemed as unsafe (residents should not enter these buildings) 1,050 buildings were given limited entry notices (residents should be careful when entering these buildings) - 31 cases were identified where 10 houses or more in the same surrounding area were destroyed cases were identified where 2 houses or more in the same surrounding area were destroyed. 14
