Denmark s fastest railway The New Line Copenhagen-Ringsted
Denmark s fastest railway will be completed in 2018 More departures, shorter travel time and fewer delays Between 2010 and 2018 Banedanmark will build a new dual track, electrified railway running from Copenhagen to Ringsted via Køge. The line will be Denmark s first high speed railway and will handle up to 250 km/h for passenger trains. Why a new railway? The existing line that runs from Copenhagen to Ringsted via Roskilde is one of Denmark s busiest and most important routes. It is used by commuters between Copenhagen and the rest of Zealand as well as for nationwide and international passenger and freight traffic. The current line has become a bottleneck when working at full capacity. The new track will result in a significantly improved timetable with more departures, shorter travel time and fewer delays. As Denmark s first high speed rail line it will contribute significantly to meeting the transport requirements of the future. Shorter travel time and new connections The new Køge Nord Station will create a central hub that allows transfers to and from the S-train system. There will also be opportunities to establish a park-andride facility just off the motorway. Trains will depart from here for Copenhagen, West Zealand, Funen and Jutland plus via Køge Station directly to Næstved. A journey from Køge Station to Copenhagen H by S-train takes 38 minutes today. The same journey will take only 24 minutes for regional trains on the new stretch via Køge Nord Station, a 14 minute gain. The travel time can be further reduced to 20 minutes for non-stop services between Køge and Copenhagen. The current travel time is 59 minutes for regional trains from Haslev to Copenhagen, including transfer to S-trains at Køge station. The new line, with direct regional connections, saves 21 minutes and cuts the journey to 38 minutes. The journey from Hårlev to Copenhagen along the East line (Østbanen) and transfer to the S-trains at Køge Station takes 61 minutes today. The same journey changing at Køge to the direct regional trains will take 45 minutes in future; that is 16 minutes saved. The new line will provide improved travel services. Other examples of time saved between Copenhagen and other cities include 6 minutes for Odense and 10 minutes for Næstved, Vordingborg and Nykøbing F. Most freight trains will move from the existing line to the new line, which allows for improving train services on the existing line via Roskilde, Ringsted, Holbæk and Kalundborg. 3
The New Line Copenhagen-Ringsted will mean more train traffic between the Danish regions, more regional train departures on Zealand and improve the conditions for international freight traffic in transit through Denmark. The first stage of The One Hour Target The new line is the future proof solution to the capacity problems between Copenhagen and Ringsted. It is also part of The One Hour Target, a political plan to shorten travel time between Denmark s largest cities so that passengers can travel by train between each of the cities Copenhagen, Odense, Aarhus and Aalborg in just one hour. The new line is the first stage of the One Hour Target and is part of the overall scheme. Other stages will be initiated within the next few years. The new line will run through 10 municipalities. The picture shows the track in Greve. What will be built? The new line is Denmark s largest rail project for many years. The approximately 60 kilometre stretch passes through 10 municipalities and involves many people, directly or indirectly. Preparatory work The client group for the new line manage and coordinate the project from an office in Brøndby. A number of consultants from Danish and international advisor teams have been attached to the project. Between 2010 and 2013 they will assist Banedanmark with a range of preparatory work such as drillings, utility relocation, archaeological preliminary investigations, expropriations and the final decision on the route. What we will build The physical construction work will begin in It will include: A new dual track, electrified railway between Copenhagen and Ringsted Platforms at Ny Ellebjerg Station for regional and long distance trains A new station (Køge Nord) with connections to a new station on the S-train line A connection at Køge Nord for the Lille Syd line to/from Køge and Næstved An additional track at Køge Station Track renovation at Ringsted Station The new line will be built for high speed trains travelling at up to 250 kilometres per hour. 4 5
The new line built out of Copenhagen will run close to the Holbæk motorway. Hvidovre can be seen at the bottom of the picture. The route The new line will pass through the municipalities of Copenhagen, Hvidovre, Brøndby, Vallensbæk, Høje-Taastrup, Ishøj, Greve, Solrød, Køge and Ringsted. It will run through densely populated and trafficked areas as well as historical, cultural and recreational locations. The new railway will follow the motorway network in the main but takes physical conditions and space constraints into account. These may be roads, buildings and environmentally sensitive areas as well as minimum curvature requirements for the line. As a result the railway may deviate away from the motorway in some places. In others it will cross the motorway as well as associated ramps and other roads. Tracing the route The route begins at Vigerslev at Frugtmarkedet where the two new tracks fork from the existing line. It will be constructed in a wide curve out of Copenhagen, through Vigerslevparken and on along the north side of the Holbæk motorway. The line then goes under and follows the south side of the motorway to Vallensbæk Mose. Here it crosses over Motorring 4 and continues along the west side of Køge Bugt motorway to the large curve at the Scandinavian Transport Centre at Køge. Banedanmark will build a new station named Køge Nord Station. It will be linked to a new station for the S-trains and to the Lille Syd line in the direction of Køge- Næstved. An additional track will be laid from Københavnsvej to Køge Station. Two new tracks will be built north of the West motorway from Køge Nord to Fjællebro. The line will follow the south side of the existing railway from Fjællebro to Ringsted Station. Roskilde Copenhagen Ny Ellebjerg At you will find a map of the new line. You can also find your address here and follow what will happen in your local area. The map will be updated continuously. 5 Improved rail connections are imperative if the railway is to be an attractive option for passengers and freight transport in the future. More efficient train services contribute significantly to increased mobility and development of society on a sustainable basis. Across national borders The New Line Copenhagen-Ringsted assumes international importance as part of the Trans-European Network that will link Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. The railway is also a significant part of the freight corridor from Northern Sweden to Northern Italy. The opportunities to expand freight traffic and to improve conditions for international travellers will increase after the opening of the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link and the associated upgrading and expansion of the line from Ringsted to Rødby. Dialogue with citizens Banedanmark maintains close contacts with citizens, particularly landowners affected by the project. In part this is in relation to temporary or permanent expropriations but it is also with regard to measuring and drilling, nature studies, archaeological excavations and so on. This is achieved through meetings, phone calls and correspondence. Banedanmark updates the website regarding project activity and interested parties can subscribe to news and information on progress. When the construction work begins in 2012, signage will show diversions and re-routing of roads. Wherever possible the greatest possible consideration will be given to motorists and residents along the new line. In partnership with motorway expansion While Banedanmark builds the new railway line, the Danish Road Directorate (Vejdirektoratet) will upgrade the Køge Bugt motorway from six to eight lanes between Greve Syd and Solrød Syd. Given two major construction projects in the same vicinity, the authorities will maintain a close dialogue with affected citizens, businesses and municipalities. Accordingly, Banedanmark work closely with the Road Directorate with regard to planning, expropriations, construction work and communication. Consideration for nature and culture along the line Banedanmark will take nature and cultural heritage along the line into consideration. The project will be administered according to the Museum Act at construction locations and will work closely with the Danish Agency of Culture. It will also comply with the Nature Conservation Act and do so in collaboration with the Nature Agency. The Act and the Minister of Transport give the authority for Banedanmark to administer these two acts. 8 9

Banedanmark s vision Toward 2020 we are creating the railway of the future with the aim of doubling passenger and freight usage. Banedanmark s functions Approximately 2200 employees nationwide are working to: Plan, operate, renew and maintain the Danish state s railway infrastructure Manage and monitor traffic on the rail network Prepare the overall train timetable for the state rail network Allocate capacity to train operators Determine and collect revenue from the track operators The New Line Copenhagen-Ringsted mission We build the new railway between Copenhagen and Ringsted as a foundation for more and faster trains across and through Denmark. The New Line Copenhagen-Ringsted vision We want to construct The New Line Copenhagen-Ringsted European bestin-class by purchasing in a competitive market and leveraging from economy-ofscale and state-of-the-art technology in the life cycle perspective. The new railway will achieve a doubling of passenger and freight transport and provide the potential for optimising capacity and usage on adjacent lines. Because no similar tracks have been constructed in Denmark in recent times we will place emphasis on learning from comparable projects abroad. Holland, Belgium and France are among the countries from where we will acquire knowledge and experience with regard to high speed railways. This applies both to procurement of materials and hire of employees as well as when we exploit economies of scale and technological opportunities. 11 Frontpage photo: New French railway.
