2 The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Mission Statement The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is a national, not-for profit, voluntary health agency whose mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin s disease, and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. The Society provides funding for research, public and professional education, advocacy, patient aid, and community support programs. Leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin s disease and myeloma are cancers that affect the blood-forming and infection-fighting organs including the bone marrow, lymph nodes, and spleen. Someone new is diagnosed every four minutes. Every ten minutes, someone loses the fight. Leukemia remains the number one disease killer of children, and it affects ten times as many adults as children. While the cause of these cancers remains unknown, steady advances in research and treatment bring us closer to cures everyday. Leukemia and lymphoma research has also led to cures for other forms of cancers. Bone marrow transplantation and chemotherapy the backbone for treatment of most forms of cancer-stemmed from leukemia research. Everyone is concerned with identifying cures and improving treatments for cancer. Currently, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society supports more than 400 research projects throughout the world. Cure rates have gone from 4% in 1960 to almost 85% today, due to continued funding in research. With your help, our goal can become a reality. Team In Training Mission Statement Team In Training is a comprehensive endurance training program for runners, walkers, triathletes, cyclists, and hikers to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The goal of Team In Training is to increase funding to support the Society s mission while promoting fitness and healthy lifestyles. Kentucky & Southern Indiana Chapter The Kentucky & Southern Indiana Chapter serves 120 counties in Kentucky and 20 counties in Southern Indiana and is one of more than 58 chapters nationwide. Through a full-time Patient Services Manager, we support more than 3,700 patients in Kentucky and Southern Indiana on an annual basis. Our commitment to treatment and the quality of life of patients is evident through our patient aid program. Financial assistance up to $150 per year is given by The Society to our patients being treated for leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma and specific myelodysplastic syndromes. In addition, we facilitate support groups for our patients and their families and education programs for the health care providers in our area. A 24-hour resource hotline is available along with print materials aimed to help patients navigate their cancer diagnosis.

3 Event Description This year, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will train around 40,000 runners, walkers, triathletes, cyclists, and hikers to participate in a marathon, half-marathon, triathlon, century ride, or hike in our most successful fundraising program nationwide, Team In Training. During its 25 year history, the program has experienced tremendous growth, training over 600,000 athletes and raising over $1.3 billion. The Kentucky & Southern Indiana Chapter took its first Team of 7 participants to the Rocket City Marathon in 1993 by bus. Today, our local Team In Training program has two seasons each year and offers more than ten events across the country. Team In Training offers runners, walkers, triathletes, cyclists, and hikers of all fitness abilities a four to five month comprehensive training program under the guidance of experienced coaches and guest speakers. In return for tailored training, travel and accommodations for the event weekend of their choice, the participants raise valuable funds to help fight blood cancers. Each member of our TEAM is participating in honor of a child or adult from our community affected by leukemia. Completing an endurance event is a celebration of the human spirit, physical ability and mental endurance. For members of Team In Training, it is also a celebration of life. Our Audience By offering personalized running, walking, triathlon, and cycling programs, Team In Training attracts a wide audience. Our target markets are professionals, between the ages of 28 and 55, interested in reaching a personal fitness goal with the guidance of a trainer and the support of a team while having the capacity and desire to raise significant funds for others in their community. Visibility The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is a highly respected national health agency dedicated to finding a cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin s disease and myeloma and improving the quality of life for patients and their families. Team In Training is a 365 day a year program for the Society, offering sponsors continuous promotional opportunities in this rapid growing market. Participation in Team In Training would enhance your image of public consciousness and concern in the community, while offering tremendous potential for advertising, publicity, and sales promotion. According to Runner s World Magazine 1 in every 15 people who finish a marathon are trained by The Society through Team In Training, raising money to help find a cure for blood cancers.
