Recycling Guide Simple steps that will make a big difference 2015/16
Well done and a BIG thank you! Residents of Warrington have done a great job in recycling their household waste. Currently Warrington is recycling over 5% of its total waste. Warrington Borough Council would like to thank everyone for their effort and support. While we have achieved some great things, we still need to work together to continue to increase recycling and reduce the amount of waste we produce. How well are we recycling in Warrington? We re really good at recycling newspapers and magazines, but we re currently only recycling about 57% of the cardboard we throw away - don t forget to recycle cardboard on things like ready meals, packs of yogurts & toothpaste boxes. Tetra Pak is causing a bit of confusion when it comes to recycling, many of us are unsure what it is. Put simply, its cartons that contain liquids i.e. juice & milk cartons and pasta sauce cartons. They can all go in the blue recycling bin. We could do better when it comes to recycling our food & drinks cans. Give them a quick rinse and pop them in the blue recycling bin. Currently less than a third of aerosol cans (i.e. hairspray, deodorant & air freshener cans) get recycled. These can safely go in the blue recycling bin. It costs us over 750,000 to dispose of items that could have been recycled in the blue bin. Help us to recycle more. 2
Additional Blue Recycling Bins If one blue bin isn t enough for all your recyclables, you can order a second blue bin on-line at or by calling Contact Warrington on (01925) Bulky Rubbish Collection Service We can collect bulky items that you no longer want, including old furniture, fridges and freezers (charges apply for some items). Real Cotton Nappies Using real cotton nappies can help you save money and they re better for the environment. If you are a Warrington resident you can get a discount when buying cotton nappies. Whenever possible we will try to reuse or recycle your bulky items. For more information on this service please call Contact Warrington on (01925) For more information call our Recycling Team on (01925) 260 or nsdwasteteam@warrington.gov.uk Further information on recycling and waste collections: To find out the collection days of your blue, green and black bins visit or call Contact Warrington on: (01925) 3322 or nsdwasteteam@warrington.gov.uk You can now follow Recycle for Warrington on Twitter (@RecycleWgtn) and Facebook. 3
5 easy ways to reduce the waste in the black bin. Recycle fully: Are you recycling absolutely everything? Even those shampoo bottles in the bathroom? Rinse out food cans, glass jars and plastic yogurt pots / food trays. Often these items are not recycled because they are dirty, but with a quick rinse they can go in the blue bin. Reduce your food waste: Do a meal plan for the week ahead and write your shopping list around it. A little bit of planning can save you money and reduce your food waste. Check the dates on the food you buy and if you can t eat it in time, freeze it. Consider home composting: Fruit and vegetable peelings, eggshells, tea bags and banana skins can make wonderful compost for your garden, as well as reducing your waste. We have special offers throughout the year for FREE compost bins, check the website for more information. Recycle your clothes & shoes: If you throw your old clothes & shoes away because you think no one else would want them, you couldn t be more wrong. Even clothes & shoes that are worn and have holes in can be recycled into something new. Recycle them in WBC textiles banks throughout the borough or take them to charity shops. Use the Community Recycling Centres & Recycling Sites: For items that can t be recycled in the blue bin, such as electrical items, take them to one of the Community Recycling Centres in Warrington. If at certain times of the year, your blue bin gets full too quickly, take the extra to one of our recycling sites.
Waste less food and save up to 700 a year In Warrington about 35% of waste in the black bin is food waste - most of this could have been avoided. We tend to waste food for two reasons; either we have cooked or prepared too much or we don t get around to eating it before it goes off. Wasted food costs the average family with children over 700 a year and it costs Warrington Council about 1.29 million to dispose of the food waste in our black bins each year. By making a few simple changes we can all waste less food and save money. Tips to reduce food waste Plan your meals in advance and write a shopping list, it saves time, money & food. Check use-by and best before dates when shopping. Food should not be eaten past a use-by date, the best before date is about quality so food can still be eaten after this date but it may not be at its best. Use the freezer to store food that won t get eaten in time. Store fruit and veg in the fridge - it can last up to a fortnight longer Be creative with your leftovers, can you make a new meal out of them? Think about portion sizes, often we have tools in our kitchen to measure the correct amounts i.e. quarter of a mug is one adult portion of rice. For tips on how to reduce food waste, storage advice, portion calculator & recipe finder visit You can save almost 60 a month by throwing away less food. 5
