1 The Kingswinford School - a science college - CONTROLLED ASSESSMENTS
2 INTRODUCTION Controlled assessment was introduced for GCSE specifications for first teaching in September 2009 with the aim of addressing a number of issues that were believed to be compromising traditional coursework. Principally, controlled assessment was intended to: ensure that all candidates spend approximately the same amount of time on their assignments; prevent third parties from providing inappropriate levels of guidance and input; mitigate concerns about plagiarism and improve the reliability and validity of GCSE awards; allow centres a reasonable degree of freedom and control; allow candidates to produce an original piece of work. Individual GCSE subjects have their own controlled assessment requirements. These will contribute in different ways towards the final GCSE qualification which are detailed within the individual subject sections of this document. There are different levels of control for the work, high, medium and limited. Some tasks will allow research within and outside of the lesson whilst others are completed in exam conditions. Our aim is to deliver this aspect of the assessment as fairly as we can to individual students in order to maximise their achievement whilst keeping within the stringent guidelines as laid down by the examination boards. Further information in relation to controlled assessments can be found on the Joint Council for Qualifications website. Controlled assessment will be taught by a number of different teachers within each subject and as such moderation of work has to occur before submitting final work and marks to the awarding body. The moderation process can alter marks awarded by individual class teachers. Our moderation day in 2016 will be on Thursday 24 th March All student work needs to be completed and marked before this date in order for effective moderation to take place. Whilst individual curriculum areas will have individual deadlines for specific tasks, which need to be adhered to, the absolute deadline for student work to be accepted by teaching staff is Friday 18 th March In exceptional circumstances that have impacted upon a student then we will take individual circumstances into account. Andy Burton Deputy Head Teacher
3 INFORMATION FROM SUBJECT LEADERS ART Year 10 In Year 10 students will complete 45 hours of guided teaching in Fine Art. Students will undertake a trip to the Botanical Gardens. This is a vital part of the course as it enables the student to address the Assessment Objective Recording from Observation. Year 11 In Year 11 students will complete 45 hours of guided teaching in Fine Art (2 nd portfolio) or Photography. January Students will undertake the exam period, approximately ten weeks preparation and two 5 hour days to complete the set task (specific dates to follow). If students are also taking Photography GCSE they will have to split the ten weeks preparation time between the two GCSEs. BTEC in BUSINESS STUDIES Year 10 has a programme of continuous coursework (rather than controlled assessments) along with an online external examination (1 hour) which takes place towards the end of January/start of February. Year 11 has a programme of continuous coursework rather than controlled assessments to complete the final units of course work along with preparation for re-takes of the online external examination. GCSE in BUSINESS STUDIES Year 10 students will work on theory tasks throughout the autumn term in Year 10 and will be completing Controlled Assessment tasks in the Spring and Summer terms. Students will complete this during the first part of the spring term in January The remaining controlled assessment will take place in the second half of the spring term in March 2015 on the theme of personal information and lifestyle. Year 10 French During the 2 year GCSE course, 4 controlled assessments will take place; 2 in speaking and 2 in writing. January 2015 controlled assessment in writing July 2015 controlled assessment in speaking January 2016 controlled assessment in writing March 2016 controlled assessment in speaking The Edexcel exam board stipulates that the controlled assessment tasks have to change every 2 years and are taken from the following four themes: - Personal Information - Out and About - Future plans, education and work - Customer service and transactions Some themes lend themselves more favourably to the speaking assessment as opposed to the writing assessment and vice versa. The subject teachers will select the appropriate skill to maximise and optimise student performance. This allows a certain amount of flexibility when choosing the controlled skill to be assessed. Each controlled assessment is worth 15% (2 in speaking/2 in writing), totalling 60% of the final GCSE mark.
