3 Welcome Dear students This is an exciting time to become a Sixth-Former at Nene Park Academy. Through the partnership with Swavesey Village College the opportunity and quality of provision of the curriculum at Nene Park Academy has improved dramatically and the superb new building with its fantastic facilities will open as you join us in Year 12. Our Sixth Form is expanding and academic standards are being driven up year on year as more and more of our students are enjoying a bright future in higher education. 6 ART & DESIGN Ashley Briers - I decided to stay as Nene Park Academy offers such a range of different subjects to study at both AS and A2 Levels. Art & Design Art of all types has been an outlet for personal and communal expression as well as pure creativity the world would be a much poorer place). Art offers a unique kinaesthetic way of learning and can contribute to the personal development of students by providing a powerful and distinctive form of communication and expression. Art can also taught through art. provide a balance of work which enables you to experience different approaches and modes inform and enable you to produce work that has greater depth and meaning.

8 ENGLISH & FRENCH English Literature The study of English Literature opens your mind to the experiences of people from around the world. English will introduce you to some of the greatest works of English and world literature as it touches on all aspects of humanity. The skills that you learn in English will prepare you for many careers and other areas and challenge you to think in different and alternative ways. It will promote independent thought about the past and arouse your critical faculties for the future. In one unit of the English Literature course you will be encouraged to use integrated linguistic and literary approaches in your reading and interpretation of texts. You will engage creatively and between texts. You will also be encouraged to undertake independent and sustained studies to develop your skills as producers and interpreters of language. 9 English Language and Literature The English language dominates world culture. The literature of the British Isles and other English speaking nations is widely-regarded as representing some of the the modern media-centred world lies at the heart of this subject. Media Studies Media Studies is designed to encourage students to enhance their enjoyment and appreciation of the media and its role in their daily lives. It also invites them to develop critical understanding of the media through engagement with media products and concepts and through the creative application of production skills. For both AS and A2 level Media Studies you will study for a written examination and work on a production task that demonstrates your understanding of representation will consider the way that the media is regulated and how we interpret television There is a strong focus on developing your thinking skills. You will learn theories of communication that will allow you to analyse media texts and design and produce contexts. Media students are able to develop practically through writing and the materials. You will become independent in research skills and applying them in your production work whilst developing their own views and interpretations. These skills course supports and develops their learning in other areas.
10 French If you want a mix of activities in lessons and an intellectually stimulating course within your grasp. We offer languages to A Level and may be able to offer GCSE courses and taster courses in European languages on request. We are hoping to build exchange links with schools in France and Italy over the next couple of years and will support work experience abroad. AS Level Unit 2 = Speaking Topics for Units: A2 Level Unit 4 = Speaking Topics for Units: You tackle a range of issues and debates and really get your teeth into an in- students often comment on how much they have learned in the course aside from the language. HUMANITIES Geography Geography is a subject which engages students in the world in which they live. It introduces them to ideas and theories on areas and landscapes which they see as part of their everyday life and inspires them to explore further. As geography is all around us in everything we do there could not be a more relevant subject to study. It looks at both the physical characteristics of our planet and the human features useful for careers in many areas. You will study a range of physical and human topics in AS Geography: Managing physical environments: Managing change in human environments: You will then go on to study 2 further modules at A2 Level called Global Issues and Geographical Skills.

12 History well ordered case backed by supporting evidence. The skill most developed by interpretations clearly and coherently. History at AS Level is divided into two separate topics. One section is Britain and the new century 1900 to1924. This study examines the changing fortunes of the three main political parties at the beginning of the 20th century and the way in and the way in which World War 1 affected life in the UK. The exam is a source based paper which allows students to develop their analytical skills as well as extending their knowledge of an exciting period of British history. The other part of the course covers Italy 1896 to You will study the way in which Italian governments dealt with internal problems from 1896 to 1915 and then you will look at the impact of Italy s involvement in World War 1. Much of the course covers the rise of Mussolini and his fascist dictatorship. This section examines the impact of Mussolini s domestic and foreign policies. The exam is a knowledge based paper. Interpretation. The Interpretation is one 2000 word piece in response to a set question and four historical interpretations. The focus of this section is to be based on an issue about which there are a variety of views. The third section of the course is the study of civil rights in the USA supreme court to this matter and the way in which each group of people campaigned for their civil rights over this particular period.

Students with an inquisitive mind enjoy the challenge of this new and unfamiliar subject. becoming more analytical. 14 Sociology Sociology is the study of society. It is about all kinds of social relationships that people share with each other in their research and management studies. You will study all varieties of human experience. Social theory is also important in Sociology. It teaches us that there are no right or wrong answers when it comes to studying the way people live together. What is important for a Sociologist is the ability to evaluate evidence and choose between possible explanations. You will enjoy Sociology if you are the type of person who is not afraid to have new ideas and who is not afraid to work at a demanding pace AS Level You will gain a clear sociological understanding of the nature of families and households in contemporary British society. You should also have knowledge and understanding of the main sociological perspectives of the family. The changes in family structure and the nature and extent of family diversity should become clear to you and you should understand the impact and effect of family arrangement on the individual. You will examine the reasons why some pupils achieve more differences based on their own theories. Governments are very interested in education and you will look at the way in which sociological studies affect the laws and policies they make. Linked with education is the study of the research collecting data through surveys. A2 Level The more extensive of these is with theory and methods. IT is also used in a variety of other careers such as with a high quality industry-recognised award. IT is vocationallyrelated and provides valuable opportunities for individuals to develop skills and gain underpinning knowledge and understanding wide range of job roles within the IT and business sector. To begin with you will learn about communication and employability skills for working in IT. Thereafter you will cover a selection of: Business Studies There is a strong argument that in the future everyone will need to have had a business apply your knowledge in a working environment. As a department we have had very research and planning and all the other factors that determine a business s success or failure.
