2 Introduction Dear Year 8 student, Last year we introduced Bridging Units to assist students make the transition from KS3 to GCSEs Over the coming weeks you have some important decisions to make about future courses and it is important that you read the information that you have been given and ask staff questions you want answered. You must remember choosing options is all about you and you make choices for yourself. We want every student to enjoy and achieve at school and after Key Stage 4 have a range of choices and opportunities. By 2015 all young people will be required to stay in education or training until their 18th birthday, so it is extremely important that you all have solid core skills in English, Maths and ICT. We want you to have the opportunity of a higher education qualification and therefore more choice of careers and a long and happy life. Every student is on this journey but we cannot all be at the same point at the same time, therefore we have created four learning pathways that are designed to support your journey to university and a good career. The pathways combine core subjects and skills with optional courses You have been assigned a learning pathway that is tailored to your needs and ensures that you have a good balance and range of subjects that give you the opportunity to gain at least 5 GCSEs including English and Maths. Ask the teachers about the courses on offer and think how it will develop your skills and knowledge and where it can take you on your journey. You have all our support and we are here to help and guide you and you must work with us as we all have a common goal, which is your success and happiness. As a purple pathway student, you will follow one of the Support programmes. This is time on your timetable where you can develop the core skills needed in English, Maths and Science and/or vocational skills at college. 4 Geography Name of exam Geography Full Course (4032) Exam Board AQA (Specification A) Course content / features Unit 1 (Physical Geography): The Restless Earth (e.g. earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis), Water on the Land (e.g. river landforms, flooding, flood prevention), The Coastal Zone (e.g. coastal landforms, cliff collapse, sea-level change) Unit 2 (Human Geography): Population Change (e.g. overpopulation, migration). The Development Gap (e.g. global inequalities, poverty, trade and aid), Globalisation (e.g. transnational corporations, the rise of China, pollution) Method of assessment: Two exams, each lasting 1 hour 30 minutes (75%) Controlled assessment, based on a local fieldwork investigation (25%) Future Career opportunities: There is a wide range of careers which make use of Geography. Geography can help you to become an architect, property developer, town planner, civil servant, meteorologist, researcher, teacher, environmental worker, scientist, construction worker, travel agent, and many, many more. 5 Geography Helpful website addresses To find out more about course content visit Skills you will develop There will be opportunities for active learning through fieldwork, debating key issues, developing problem solving and decision making, using ICT, keeping up-to-date with current affairs, and other key skills, such as literacy, time management and research. Benefits of the course There's more to Geography than maps. Geography is the study of places and people. It is about how people interact with their environments. Geography is therefore all around us and it affects EVERYONE. We study the BIG issues which you read about in newspapers and see on television (e.g. poverty, aid, global warming, globalisation, migration, natural disasters). Geography is a 'robust' subject. It is well-respected by colleges, universities and employers. Having a Geography qualification means that students have developed a wide range of skills. These skills will also be useful to students when studying other subjects (e.g. English, Science and Mathematics). Students will develop skills in working independently and working as part of a group. Students will learn about the importance of planning their work and being able to reflect so further improvements can be made. Geography Page 5

6 History Name of exam Modern World History. Exam Board Edexcel. Method of assessment Combination of in-class assessments, coursework enquiries and traditional examinations. Future Career opportunities A qualification in history can lead to a career in law, journalism, business, teaching, politics, library work and museum work. Course contents / features A focus on the 20th Century World and International Relations focusing on skills that prepare students for G.C.S.E history. Pathway post 16 A G.C.S.E in history could potentially lead to an A level in the subject and then a degree in the Social Sciences. Helpful website addresses History Page 6

7 History Skills you will develop High level literacy skills including reading and writing academic essays Research and investigational skills Debating Organisational skills Time management Benefits of the course A qualification in history is highly regarded by colleges and universities as it is considered a traditional, academic subject that teaches you skills in writing, debate, discussion, critical analysis of texts and reading Teaching & Learning experiences Aims: The History department at St. Mary s ultimately believes that an A level History student should have a unique two year experience. We feel that A level history should be an investigation into the modern world, current issues and be as relevant as possible for our students. We aim to develop keen, literate and curious young historians, who have high expectations of their studies, but also a great appreciation of the importance of history in our lives. Methods of Teaching: We aim to make lessons as varied as possible, using a wide range of sources and teaching methods including debate, discussion, group work and role-play. We also try to use various medias such as audio and video footage as well as encouraging students to use ICT. Our most recent inspection has described our teaching as imaginative and innovative and amongst the best in the school as well as the borough. History Page 7

8 Business Studies Name of exam GCSE in Applied Business (single Award). The GCSE Single Award qualification will be graded and certificated on a 15-grade scale from A* - G Exam Board Edexcel Course content / features GCSE in Applied Business (Single Award): Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3 and Unit 4 Unit 1 is based on coursework. Students will investigate two chosen businesses and use the information gathered to respond to tasks set by Edexcel under supervised conditions. These tasks will be published in advance so that students will know what to expect. The completed tasks will be submitted to Edexcel once they have been marked by the teachers. For Unit 2 there is a 60-minute written examination based on a business scenario. Students will use what they have learnt to answer questions. Most students will take one exam in Y10 and one in Y11 but there will be an opportunity to resit Unit 2 in the hope of improving grades. Method of assessment Students complete 1 controlled assessment and 1 exam over a period of 1 year. Future Career opportunities Applied Business has strong links with lots of other subjects and develops skills such as IT, as well as enhancing your communication and mathematical skills. Job opportunities include traineeships or apprenticeships in finance, administration, clerical occupations and customer service reps. Business Studies Page 8

10 Art, Design & Technology Name of exam GCSE Art and Design Exam Board EDEXCEL Course content / features Students record and observe in different media, using artists' ideas and work as a starting point for the development of their own ideas and artwork. Students apply the knowledge that they have learnt to refine and modify their artwork, to communicate their ideas effectively Method of assessment Students produce a portfolio of work in class and then develop ideas to produce their own work based on artists and contemporary ideas. 60% of the exam is based on coursework which is completed in class. The exam comprises of 8 weeks of investigation work in the students sketchbook and a two day exam where students produce an original piece of artwork. The exam, sketchbook and the final piece = 40% of the overall marks. Future Career opportunities: Art offers a dynamic and exciting range of opportunities, especially in the digital age with the advancement of technology including everything from working in special effects in the film industry, designing computer games and web applications, to illustration, fashion design, textiles and printmaking. Art is a subject in which students can learn more about themselves as well as the artists that they study, and the skills to communicate thoughts and feelings in visual and written formats. 12 MFL Name of exam Spanish Exam Board EDEXCEL Course content / features There are 4 topic areas in listening and reading: Out and about Customer service and transactions Personal information Future plans, education and work There are 5 topic areas in speaking and writing: Media and Culture Sport and Leisure Travel and Tourism Business, work employment Decided by the centre Listening paper (40 marks) Foundation paper - 25 minutes + 5 minutes reading time Higher paper - 35 minutes + 5 minutes reading time Learning a foreign language is like an adventure that not only implies learning a new vocabulary, following some grammatical rules but also exploring other territories, such as other countries, cultures, food, literature, sports and religion Reading paper (40 marks) Foundation- 35 minutes / higher 50 minutes, includes one non-verbal question in the target language. 13 MFL Method of assessment Listening and reading - exams marked by EDEXCEL, each worth 20% of the final grade Writing - controlled assessment, marked by the EDEXCEL Assessment focuses on communication with students completing two different writing tasks, worth 30% of the final grade. Speaking - controlled assessment, marked by the centre, worth 30% of the final grade. Students complete 2 different tasks from picture-based discussion or presentation and follow-up discussion or open interaction. Future Career opportunities There are a huge range of career opportunities attached to GCSE French/ Spanish. These include: catering, teaching, travel agency work, hospitality, diplomatic service, social work, interpreting and translating, army, police, airport staff, airline crew, tourist industry, medicine, law, business, and foreign affairs. Pathway post 16 Be able to study AS and A2 French/Spanish. Add an extra dimension to your personal skills profile which will impress anyone who reads your CV. Be in a stronger position to get a job in companies with international links or to work abroad. Benefits of the course Students will be able to share their interests, ideas and opinions with other people who speak French/ Spanish. Students will learn about the countries, the culture where these languages are spoken. Students will add an international dimension to their choice of GCSE subjects, which is something many future employers and higher education providers look for. Students will find that the study of a foreign language will be an advantage in their future careers and in leisure activities. Skills you will develop / Teaching and learning experiences Students will learn the ability to communicate clearly, being confident of speaking in public, using problem-solving strategies. Students will create greater opportunities for themselves to work abroad, or for companies in the UK with international links. MFL Page 13

14 Music Name of exam Music - Key stage 3 to GCSE Bridging Course. Course content / features Autumn term - 1st half Introduction to course and overview of GCSE structure and content. With a focus on improvisation using different scales and modes, this would include Pentatonic, Aeolian Mode, C major, A minor. Autumn term - 2nd half Working with harmonic structures Spring term - 1st half Music Technology-effects and processes. Recording techniques and basic sequencing skills Spring term - 2nd half Revision of African music from Year 7 and group ensemble work focussing on Call & Response, Polyrhythms, Cross Rhythms and changes in Texture. Summer term - 1st half Song writing. Looking at structure, chord patterns, melody writing. Summer term - 2nd half West side story, how does a musical work? Looking at plot, musical styles, structure and character Method of assessment 1.Performing 30% of total GCSE: Whilst maintaining the KS3 approach of more ensemble and paired work, there are several assessed performances including one early on in the year of a solo piece which can be a student s own choice or one learnt in class. Set-works are also introduced through performance and improvisation. 2. Composing 30% of total GCSE: This bridges the KS3 approach of paired composition and allows for this but also some work with short briefs such as Baroque style work which can easily be undertaken Music Page 14

15 Music using the features as an individual piece. Students compose and improvise in varied and different styles such as Contemporary song style, Baroque & African which reflects the variety of styles possible for their controlled coursework 3. Listening and Appraising 40% of total GCSE: This bridging course allows initial study on several of the 12 set works which make up the material for the listening exam. Yiri, West-Side Story and the Moby have been chosen as they are pretty accessible and relate to KS3 topics well. The number of listening and knowledge tests in this course will also lay down clear assessments and help predict grades accurately as they will be in the same format as the actual exam. It should be noted that in each term there are at least two main assessments of different areas of the course. They are marked in the same manner as the exam assessments will be so feedback to students about their progress should be frequent and clear. Future career opportunities Career opportunities include working in the music industry, teaching or any other creative environment. Pathway post 16 GCSE Music will help students to progress into A levels or BTEC National courses either in Music or any of the other creative arts Subject. Analytical - students will have to be able to analyse different kinds of music. Self-discipline - students will be required to work independently. 16 Performing Arts - Drama Name of exam BTEC Level 2 First Award in Performing Arts. Course content / features Exam Board Edexcel Unit 1 Individual Showcase external assessment This unit covers what to include in a letter of application and how to prepare audition pieces or presentations that will demonstrate your relevant skills and knowledge. Unit 2 Preparation, Performance and Production In this unit you will learn how to develop a performance piece as a member a performance company. You will develop performance skills and techniques and will present you performance to a live audience. Unit 3 Acting Skills This unit is about building your foundations as an actor it s not just about performance. You will undertake a programme of practical classes to develop your physical and mental acting skills Method of assessment: There is no final written examination as the majority of the assessments are based on the practical work undertaken in the rehearsals and the performances. 17 Performing Arts - Drama Future Career opportunities Career opportunities can be in the performing arts industry, some past students are now working in the professional industry or studying at drama school or university. The course will give students the confidence to speak and perform to an audience. This is a vital skill for not only the performing arts industry but any industry working with people such as customer service industries, sales or where presentational skills are required. Pathway post 16 The BTEC Extended certificate is the starting point for study in higher education in 6th form or college and/or further education at University. Students will be expected to work together to create performances. The performances will be either in class time or public performances. Skills you will develop Students will study the theatrical and historical background to theatre. As well as developing the acting skills and techniques required to make, perform and respond to a wide genre of theatre. They will also learn other skills such as working with others, communication and negotiation skills. Benefits of the course The course will benefit anyone who is thinking about a career in the performing arts industry. Also anyone who is thinking about a career that involves working as part of a team, producing events or presenting to an audience. Teaching and Learning experiences The majority of the lessons will be practical in the Drama Studio, exploring different acting styles, creating drama from scripts or devising from a stimulus. There will also be workshops from visiting professionals and trips to theatre venues to experience professional theatre Assessment objective / focus: Each unit of study has several criteria each of which must be passed. 18 PE Name of exam GCSE Physical Education Exam Board Edexcel Course content / features The GCSE programme offers a practical and theoretical understanding of sport, anatomy and physiology and healthy and active lifestyles. A large section of the course is based on analysis of sporting performance and how the body makes adaptations through different training methods. Method of assessment 40% written exam 1hour 30 minutes exam on the theory of physical education 50% practical assessment Students are assessed in four different activities 10% analysis of performance Students are assessed in the knowledge of one sport and must create and perform a persona; exercise plan. Assessment objective / focus Students are assessed on the following criteria:- The ability to demonstrate good athletic ability and have a positive influence on the outcome of the activity. Students must be able to answer multi- choice, short answer and essay questions on healthy and active lifestyles. Students must be able to look at their own and others performance and give and accurate assessment, suggesting how performance can be improved. PE Page 18

The controlled assessment requires students to create a 6 week training programme which will develop analytical and literacy abilities. Benefits of the course Students learn in different settings in PE. Practical performance is assessed by the class teacher and by peers in different sporting facilities.
