9 Why GLORIA? Over the last decades state of the art spaceborne sensors have increased a lot our knowledge on large-scale stratospheric composition, chemistry and transport But important issues, particularly on smaller scales, still remain open Mesoscale processes and their role for the global scale Emerging IR detector array and computer technology allow limb imaging instead of limb scanning Improvement of spatial sampling by a factor of 5-10 along with providing spatial coverage and tomographic capabilities 9
