1 addenda The University of Tennessee at Martin Faculty and Staff Newsletter June 29, 2015 Record number accepted to veterinary schools for fall 2015 semester Eighteen UT Martin students have been accepted into veterinary school programs beginning this fall. This number breaks the previous record of 10 students, set in The large number of students accepted to veterinary school exemplifies the quality of instruction through experiential learning from our animal and veterinary science faculty, said Dr. Todd Winters, professor and dean, College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. Great students result from great faculty, and with this success our student numbers in this area should continue to grow. Seven students have been accepted into the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Students attending at the flagship campus are Andrew Jordan, of Lewisburg; Brandon Newton, of Greenbrier; Kaylee Penick, of Martin; Zachary Ragland, of Whitehouse; Leslie Serrano, of EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING Dr. Jason Roberts (right), associate professor of animal science at the University of Tennessee at Martin, explains an X-ray to a group of students. 2 page 2 addenda June 29, 2015 YoUTMs Dr. Elaine Harriss, professor of music, attended the 2015 Tennessee Music Teachers Association Conference and Competitions in Chattanooga, June 6-9. Harriss is a member of the TMTA executive board and is the state competition coordinator. She was in charge of the two competition days, which included 232 entries from across the state. faculty and staff excellence Drs. Louis Glover, Karen DiBella and Kim Williams, assistant professors, Department of Educational Studies, all received Presentation Excellence Awards from the International Conference on Learning and Administration in Higher Education 2015, held in Nashville. The awards are given based on average ratings from conference attendees. PAGEANT PERFORMANCE Shelby Dotson (second from left), competed in the 2015 Miss Tennessee Scholarship Pageant as Miss UT Martin, June She was recognized by the judges as one of five nonfinalists whose performance in the preliminary competitions deserved honorable mention. Dotson is a junior education major from Rutherford. Hannah Robison, a senior chemistry major from Paris, ultimately claimed the Miss Tennessee title. Robison is the fourth UT Martin student to serve as Miss Tennessee and the first since CONFERENCE ATTENDEES Five members of the Paul Meek Library staff attended the 2015 Circulation Conference, held June 18 on the campus of Southwest Tennessee Community College in Memphis. Attendees were also able to network with other library circulation personnel and discuss challenges, procedures and successes facing the profession. The Office of University Relations earned two recognitions in the TCPRA Communications Awards competition. The 2015 awards were announced during the spring meeting of the Tennessee College Public Relations Association, May 2829, in Gatlinburg. The office earned a Silver Award for Print Advertisement Series for its UT Martin Advantage ads and a Silver Award for Banners/Outdoor Media for last year s thought bubble outdoor advertising campaign. Contributing to the design and messaging success in these two categories were Rob Hopgood, publications coordinator; Nathan Morgan, university photographer; and Carmen Wagster, marketing coordinator. Also, thanks to the Huron Undergraduate Enrollment team and the UTM students who represent the university in SERVICE RECOGNIZED Rickey McCurry (right), president and CEO of the UT Foundation, presented Dr. Lynn Alexander (center) with a plaque recognizing her service on the UT Foundation Board of Trustees during its June 12 meeting. 3 page 3 addenda June 29, 2015 New dual enrollment program offered for academic year UT Martin will offer eligible high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to take up to two dual enrollment courses at no additional cost in the academic year. Students must qualify for the Dual Enrollment Grant offered through the Tennessee Student Assistance Program. TSAC provides high school juniors with two $500 Dual Enrollment Grants for the first two courses and one $200 grant for a third course. Tuition for juniors will be $500 for two courses, providing the courses are the first two dual enrollment courses taken during the school year. Senior students can receive $300 per course for four courses within the guidelines of the Dual Enrollment Grant. UT Martin tuition for seniors will be $300 for two courses. Tuition above these courses will be charged at the regular dual enrollment rate. UT Martin offers high-quality dual enrollment courses that prepare students for rigorous college classes. General education courses offered for dual enrollment students include English, mathematics, agriculture, economics, geology, personal finance and information systems. Students can take courses in a traditional classroom setting, online, at the main campus or at one of the four UT Martin centers located Jackson, Parsons, Selmer and Ripley. SUMMER INSTITUTE The West Tennessee Writing Project hosted its 22nd Invitational Summer Institute on June Five teachers learned how to incorporate technology into their teaching and put higher focus on student reading and writing. Teachers were also able to improve their own writing skills in afternoon peer workshops. Dr. David Carithers, UT Martin associate professor of English and project director, and Lauderdale Middle School teachers Jennifer Brandon and Doug Billings facilitated this year s institute. CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION The West Tennessee Criminal Investigators Association honored the UT Martin criminal justice program with a certificate of recognition and appreciation during its annual seminar, May WTCIA representatives have worked closely with the UT Martin program for many years by giving classroom presentations and assisting with upper-division student competitions. Criminal justice students and faculty helped organize the 2015 seminar, held in the Boling University Center, which focused on globalization and its effects on law enforcement operations. For more information, please contact the newly renamed Office of Enrollment Services and Student Engagement at MUSIC CAMP Fifty middle school students from across West Tennessee attended UT Martin s first annual middle school instrumental camp June Participating students studied music theory, piano, jazz improvisation and chamber music. They also spent time in master classes and in large ensemble rehearsal. Students ended the week with a final performance for family and friends. The camp was funded in part by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission. Dr. Johnathan Vest, associate professor of music, served as grant administrator and camp coordinator, and Dr. John Oelrich (pictured, standing), assistant professor of music, served as camp director. In Memoriam TRAVEL STUDY Drs. Johnathan Vest and Mark Simmons, both associate professors of music, recently led a travel study to visit musically significant historical sites in central and eastern Europe. The group spent time in Budapest, Hungary; Vienna and Salzburg, Austria; Bratislava, Slovakia; and Prague, Czech Republic. Students were also able to study at the world-renowned Kodaly and Orff Music Education Institutes. Boling served as the UT System s 17th president from and held the longest recent term of service in that office. He was a strong supporter of alumni relationships and was instrumental in the expansion of UT women s athletic programs. The Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville and the Boling University Center in Martin are both named in his honor. 5 page 5 addenda June 29, 2015 Tuition rises three percent for academic year The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees approved the lowest tuition percentage increase in more than 30 years during its annual meeting June 25 in Knoxville. Undergraduate tuition will increase by 3 percent at UT campuses in Knoxville, Chattanooga and Martin as part of the $2.13 billion budget for fiscal year The increase is effective for the 2015 fall semester. The last time all three campuses increased tuition for undergraduates by 3 percent was in UT Knoxville and UT Martin increased tuition by 3 percent in UT Martin instate tuition and mandatory fees will now cost undergraduate students an YoU Tell Me Questions and Answers about UT Martin Question How many fire extinguishers and AEDs are located around the main campus? Answer A new fire extinguisher and AED tracking program shows approximately 960 fire extinguishers and 43 AEDs on campus. Thirty-seven AEDs are under the control of Environmental Health and Safety, five AEDs are controlled by intercollegiate athletics, and one is controlled by the Office of Campus Recreation. Submit your questions to the Suggestion Box link at addenda additional $302 annually, which includes a student-supported $50 per semester activity fee for athletics. New tuition and fees will be $4,163 per semester or $8,326 for a full academic year. Full-time undergraduate enrollment is a minimum of 12 credit hours. Tuition and mandatory fees for instate graduate students will increase $340 per semester for a total of $4,824 per semester. Graduate students will pay a total of $9,648 per academic year starting this fall. Full-time graduate enrollment is nine hours per semester. Fall semester classes begin Aug. 24 for the main campus and UT Martin centers in Jackson, Parsons, Ripley and Selmer.
